Halo Wars dumped by devs, jumped ship to iPhone games |

Looks like game developers are starting to jump ship from the consoles to the iPhone. Take for example the Bettner brothers. Paul and Dave were part of the developing team of Halo Wars but have now resigned to form their own game dev company for the iPhone.
Say what? Yep, it's true. Says Paul Bettner,
My brother (Dave) and I quit our jobs working on Halo Wars for Microsoft two months ago. We quit our jobs because we believe in the iPhone. We believe it has the potential to be as revolutionary to handheld gaming as the original Gameboy was.
The company they put up is called Newtoy, and its objective is to create "the next generation of truly connected games". First on their project list: Chess with Friends. This game lets players connect and play a turn-based "asynchronous" game of chess on the iPhone. What this means is that the moves are made play-by-mail style. "[L]ike text messaging meets gaming," so Paul would describe.
If this is any indication of things to come, then it does appear that the predictions of the iPhone taking over the DS and the PSP may actually hold water, and that the big three platform makers really should watch their backs.

Ensemble studios were basically given the job of working and completing halo wars; and upon their completion the studio was ordered to be shut down.
imagine yourself in a game studio... and upon the completion of a project you knew you were going to be out of a job(this is not a rare occurrence, try to remember Tribes 2 and Dynamix)
the ceo's made the decision for a reason. and i personally think they made the write one

on doing something while bored. isn't that the whole point of the handhelds in the first place? to give you something to do during those idle moments. it was only later on that the whole concept of handhelds as a programs development tool came about.
but given that very basic objective of having portable games, i think iphone will most probably get a goal-hit here, in this aspect at least.
even if the naysayers claim that the iphone is and will only be good for casual games, truth is, casual games do sell precisely because it is easily appreciated by those people who only want to get out of boredom. and believe me, there are bajillions of people bored out there.
it's the perfect market. look at the wii. it's "only for casual games", they said. now look how casually nintendo's raking in the bucks to the big banks.
