iPhone as THE gaming handheld - Image 1

Looks like game developers are starting to jump ship from the consoles to the iPhone. Take for example the Bettner brothers. Paul and Dave were part of the developing team of Halo Wars but have now resigned to form their own game dev company for the iPhone.

Say what? Yep, it's true. Says Paul Bettner,

My brother (Dave) and I quit our jobs working on Halo Wars for Microsoft two months ago. We quit our jobs because we believe in the iPhone. We believe it has the potential to be as revolutionary to handheld gaming as the original Gameboy was.

The company they put up is called Newtoy, and its objective is to create "the next generation of truly connected games". First on their project list: Chess with Friends. This game lets players connect and play a turn-based "asynchronous" game of chess on the iPhone. What this means is that the moves are made play-by-mail style. "[L]ike text messaging meets gaming," so Paul would describe.

If this is any indication of things to come, then it does appear that the predictions of the iPhone taking over the DS and the PSP may actually hold water, and that the big three platform makers really should watch their backs.

I hope they fail. The iphone as a gaming platform is such a stupid idea. I guess the market really is all about casual games and bull***** anymore. Never thought there could be such a thing as a sellout in the videogame market. lol.

If they made games like this Chess one they're thinking about, I think it would be fun. Not enough for a huge profit, but I'd play it.. It's something to do while waiting in line bored or something

its important to understand why they made this decision.

Ensemble studios were basically given the job of working and completing halo wars; and upon their completion the studio was ordered to be shut down.

imagine yourself in a game studio... and upon the completion of a project you knew you were going to be out of a job(this is not a rare occurrence, try to remember Tribes 2 and Dynamix)

the ceo's made the decision for a reason. and i personally think they made the write one

is already out on the iTunes App store. for US$ 5, they say.

on doing something while bored. isn't that the whole point of the handhelds in the first place? to give you something to do during those idle moments. it was only later on that the whole concept of handhelds as a programs development tool came about.

but given that very basic objective of having portable games, i think iphone will most probably get a goal-hit here, in this aspect at least.

even if the naysayers claim that the iphone is and will only be good for casual games, truth is, casual games do sell precisely because it is easily appreciated by those people who only want to get out of boredom. and believe me, there are bajillions of people bored out there.

it's the perfect market. look at the wii. it's "only for casual games", they said. now look how casually nintendo's raking in the bucks to the big banks.

I hope they succeed. You're just hating because you don't have the iPhone and it's a really user friendly phone I might add. These guys obviously wants to make money who doesn't. I know my stars are gonna drop for saying this but Halo is too overrated and overused as a product like FF7. There are a lot of iPhones out there and apps are selling like crazy. redcresent has a point too so listen to him. Everything is about money and opportunity nowadays so get used to it.

Halo overused? I sincerely don't see how it has been overused. It only has 3 games released under it's belt.

As revolutionary as the Gameboy? Please. These's no disagreeing that there's money to be made when it comes to the iPhone but come on. As a console gamer I do not feel the least bit threatened by it as a gaming platform. Remember N-Gage? Games on a cell phone can only go so far, not many people will buy more than a few games for it.

the iphone/touch has alot of power they could create some pretty stunning games for it ..not to mention the fact it has a screen bigger then the ds or psp for that matter you dont even need the whole screen really this leaves room for extra buttons and i dont wanna hear anyone complain (ahh this is stupid it dosent even use the whole screen) we all have played the gba and the screen size was fine i also think the acceloromiter will be a great way to play games if used correctly (remember the motion sensor for gba yeah except this is allows you to tilt it anywhere where as the gba's sensor only allowed a left or right tilt) ...well those are my thoughts on games for the iphone/touch a couple final words: although i think its gonna make some money im 100% sure it will never overcome the ds or psp sony and nintendo know this and aint to scared trust me one must create a system for gaming first as these were not try to transform a gadget into one:)
