Halo 3 Bungie Weekly Update: atmosphere, aerial battles, and water - Image 1

The game Halo 3 has been building up for the past few weeks and it seems that the fans can't get enough. So here we are with the weekly update from Bungie. If you read the title BEYOND the words Halo 3 before going on to this you'll have a general idea of what this is about.

Frankie (the guy who made this update) discussed how the atmosphere is rendered "by creating 'virtual' pollution and air and passing “real” light through it for a realistic effect." This is a "simplified version" since this is a pretty complex topic. Speaking of complex topics, the implementation of "flocking behavior" was also discussed in the update.

There was mention of Programmer Damian Isla is working on “flocking behavior” for distant aerial battles. Since the A.I. in the flying combat sequences are geared more towards gameplay, the results don't looks as cinematic as they hoped it would be.

The "flocking behavior" should correct that. Huge aerial conflicts will be visible from the ground in some parts of the game. They are not going to make the ships static but are going to render it and actually make the battle take place. He gave an amazing example in which if you shoot a rocket at one of the ships in the distance and manage to hit it, you can actually take it down. How's that for realism?

While we're on realism, the water has been made more realistic with the addition of wind induced ripples. Another improvement is the coloring and reflection work on the water surface. Apparently, water is never really clear until you're looking directly down at it (I never noticed). The people handling the water in the game have changed it so that the water looks darker when viewed at an angle.

The biggest change (and most noticable) was the waterfall that was added in an early stage of the game. Frankie described it by saying "the water flows smoothly and slickly over some big, smooth boulders, and then cascades more energetically down the larger drops – to end in a convincing mist and splash as it hits the main body of the river".

The way Halo 3 is shaping up, it could be the most dominant FPS when it hits the market. However, until it's been released, nobody can say for sure. The Bungie update can be viewed in full at the read link provided below.

See...

I don't really care about the overall style of the game, it's basically going to feel exactlly like halo 2....it's going to be all these little details that really make the game stand out. One of the cooler things I like about Gears is that you can stand under streams of water and they don't just fall through you, they start splashing on wherever the stream of water hits....little effects like that are a nice touch...

A fool and his/her money are soon parted. Halo... lamest franchise on the PC and Xbox. I truely feel sorry for those who think Halo is great, they've never played a real FPS.

Famitsu reader

I read this article in the Famitsu (a Japanese magazine) written by industry insiders which is about some background information and knowledge. I thought I could translate and summarize key parts then post it on the other sites. ************************************************* Thesis: Why Gears of War looks so much better than other Unreal Engine based games? ************************************************* - One reason is that GoW is a brand new game; the developer Epic made this game from scratch when so many other developers make their games by heavily upgrading former titles; by using this method, these developers can save so much budget and development time. This issue is not only about Unreal Engine; it can be applied for all other games. For instance, look at Halo 3. Halo 3’s alpha build screenshots are available everywhere. Since alpha build screenshots are 95% identical to the final (retail) build shots, Halo 3 actually looks like Halo 2.5 in the graphics department; maybe Halo 3’s gameplay will rock your balls. It’s a confirmed and announced flat fact that Halo 3 is made by heavily upgrading Halo 2. Bungie is not making it from scratch. Halo 2 was made by Renderware which is far inferior to other newer development tools. - Another reason is that GoW is made only for one platform which is the X360; therefore, GoW can use most, possible and potential power of the X360. Many other multi-platform (for PC, X360 and PS3) games simply can’t do that. - Other reason is that the developer, Epic is one of the most talented companies in the entire world. Of course, if a game is made by AAA level developer then it should be distinguished. - Other reason is that Epic is the creator of the Unreal Engine itself. It’s a known thing that GoW is actually made by using Unreal Engine 3.2 or so because Epic is constantly enhancing and updating the Unreal Engine 3.x. Other developers license this engine (in this case, it’s just version 3.0) and make their games; however, Epic actually used more advanced technology for GoW which is better than the technology included in the version 3.0.

never said...

any PS3 FPS was better... Play REAL FPS games like Joint Ops Series and BF2
by - 2007-03-25 03:51:10
Just give it up

It's pretty apparent nobody cares you don't like Halo, you're all alone man. Just stop commenting I've already destroyed your worthless opinion before, I don't think I need to again. Once again, Halo is widely regarded as THE FPS, no not the lamest, but the greatest. And once again, Halo is almost in the top 20 franchises of all time after not even six years and two games. And it will be in the top twenty, quite possibly top fifteen, with just three games. If you honestly think JO is better than Halo you're not sane. You must only like those boring modern military shooters (BF2 is good, but loses its fun long before Halo does). That or you just suck at anything besides them.
by Shatterdome - 2007-03-25 04:50:23
Straight up...

I think GoW will be better then Halo 3.....but GoW doesn't have vehicles or Capture the Flag....so it's give and take as far as i'm concerned... I'm really hoping for UT3 to kick ass personally...

LOL @ JAKE

I'm laughing sooo hard it's killing me.

asdf

These water "effects" has already been done before. The game? Half Life 2 It still doesn't f*cking matter what you guys say, the game play is like going 30MPH on the freeway. In otherwords, SLOW. also to the idiot who said Halo is the biggest selling FPS in history, you're dumb as dog sh*t. At one point, There was more people playing Counter strike and all the Half Life mods at any given time. There was more people playing then the sales of Halo + Halo2 combined worldwide. And that was just Half Life 1 and its mods. You add Half Life 2 to that and you get an even bigger number. So, all you Halo fanboys, get your head out of you ass and get your facts straight.

HOLY CRAP!?

Damn, I am gonna buy halo 3 for sure. Looks as if its going to be a great game! Great deals on videogames at http://www.weshopeasy.com
by - 2007-03-25 14:20:08
Seriously

Halo is a great game... one of my best fps for sure. But.. why does everything ahve to be a contest of fanboi's. Counter Strike (1.6, CZ, Source) and Half Life 2 are great games also, along with Gears of War and BF2. But what annoys me is when people make comments like "Halo... lamest franchise on the PC and Xbox. I truely feel sorry for those who think Halo is great, they've never played a real FPS." Its an FPS game. Theres no real FPS. They are 2 seperate games ffs..
by - 2007-03-25 15:56:29
What's funny?

You're laughing because he stated facts and made you look like an idiot? I don't get it... If you must persist with telling people to play "real" FPS games, at least name a few good ones, CS 1.6, Source, and HL2 all beat Joint Operations any day. If you don't agree then YOU sir have never played a real FPS
by - 2007-03-25 18:50:42
meh

All I know is, there is still a good line of FPS coming out as well as Halo 3 that I just can't wait to get my hands on.
by - 2007-03-26 01:52:53
Yup

Little effects like that are great, and if the Weekly Updates are to be believed, it seems like Halo 3 is going to be the king of them.
by - 2007-03-26 02:00:46
The difference isn't great

If this Wiki page is correct http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_computer_and_video_games then the difference between HL and Halo isn't great. Scroll down to where it says franchise, and Half-Life has sold approximately 16 million copies across all its games making it the #1 FPS franchise, but Halo is very close behind it and after a shorter time on the market AND with less games at 14.7 million copies across all its games. So basically if you take into account all those facts (less time on the market, far fewer games (I'm assuming this list is counting all of Half-Life's add-ons/mods like Counter-Strike and Blue Shift, which would only make sense)) then Halo is the #1 selling FPS franchise, but whatever. Also, the Rainbow Six franchise is ranked above Halo, making it the second best-selling FPS franchise and Halo the third, but only God knows how many games it has, so Halo technically has sold better than it as well.
by - 2007-03-26 02:11:43
Would just like to add

that what I meant by that is that each INDIVIDUAL Halo game has much more selling power than any individual HL or R6 game. Half-Life has what nine games to it (should Source be counted?)? And Rainbow Six has at least ten. Both have been on the market longer and Halo has a total of three games (Halo 1 for Xbox and PC, Halo 2 for Xbox) yet is within about one million in sales to both the top franchises. Once Halo 2 for Vista, Halo 3 and Halo Wars are out, Halo will have easily surpassed both of them by millions.
by - 2007-03-28 05:50:14
LOL

You didn't even mention your beloved trash Halon on your list. ROFL. Moron!
by - 2007-04-14 19:40:49
Halo owns most Fps

Lol.... Face the facts... Halo owns all other current Fps games(except possibly gears, but halo 3 will own it)
