Greenberg: Xbox 360 needs no slim, has a long future ahead

Xbox 360 Elite - Image 1The Xbox 360 Elite's price drop was made possible because of the lowered production costs, and not necessarily because Sony slashed off the original PS3 price, on top of unveiling the new PS3 Slim. No, they've had this in their plans all along, and the timing, well, it's just coincidence.

This is according to Aaron Greenberg, in a chat with Kotaku. "As we continue to refine and make improvements on the internal components for the Xbox 360 and costs come down, we pass those savings on to our customers in the form of price drops," he explained. The price drop, he further said, "has been in the works for months and months."

I think it's a bit coincidental, but it's also somewhat logical with both (Sony and Microsoft) making price adjustments at this time of the year because we are turning the corner of the holiday season.

But no, contrary to prodding rumors, they are not releasing an "Xbox 360 Slim".

We feel great about our console. We have taken a different philosophy, adding more value to our existing console through updates and reinventing the system software. We feel like our system has done very well for us in the current form. We have no plans for a slim.

We feel that we're not even at the halfway point (of the Xbox 360's life cycle). That is something we believe in strongly. People have invested in these consoles, and we have massively connected communities and we have storage. I think what we did with the New Xbox Experience is a sign of what we want to do with the console.

He also expressed his belief in Natal, that it will add longevity to the Xbox 360. All in all, "the Xbox 360 has plenty of future, he says.

In 2008 Microsoft says "We feel DVD is a great medium and allows game developers to create great innovative software for the Xbox 360 platform", 20 years later, in the year 2029, everyone is using 1TB disks for storage except Microsoft. They still use DVD's. All games, except Xbox games, ship on 1 disk in a nice, small, environmentally friendly case. Xbox games ship in 15-30 disk boxes.

» alright we get it! you stupid fanboy

Ok first of all, you need to shut the ***** up your argument doesn't make sense at all and it just sounds ridiculous. 1tb disk storage? Thats totally unnecessary and most likely impossible. By the year 2029, dvds would probably be obsolete so at least make the year believable.

by leidout - 2009-08-27 13:38
» actually in 2029....

the Xbox won't have any discs at all.... worldwide releases will be simultaneously downloaded directly to the system, same goes for movies + tv shows as well...

oh wait, it's not 2029, it's 2009 and they've already started the process. Physical discs like bluray and dvd will both be obsolete in a few years.

LOL stupid fanboy. Do you actually think we'll be using disks in 2029. BTW how do you know Fony will have a 1 TB DISK in its drive. Are you working in sony who have people with small d*cks like you

For all of you that say downloadable gaming is the future, lets not forget that TO THIS DAY the 360 does not come standard with a HDD and the only upgrade options you have are expensive MICROSOFT HDD's.

» OMG LOOK WHAT I FOUND!!!

JUST FOUND SOME LEAKED IMAGES OF THE PS4 AND XBOX 720 GAME DISKS! This is for one game, by the way.

PS4: http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/408/ps4game.jpg

X720: http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/7016/xbox720game.jpg

By the way, yes it's true, the Xbox 720 will not have a DVD drive, instead it will be replaced with a CD drive to save Microsoft even more money! And the consoles RAM and processor will be sold separately as accessories much like the current 360's HDD as well as other vital components are.

» Actually

1TB discs exist already. They are expensive, as is the hardwae required to make use of them. Don't expect this to appear for home use.

400GB Blu-ray discs have also been developed and work on the PS3. Pioneer are looking to mass produce them by 2010. Pioneer are also working on a 1Tb Blu-ray disc which they hope to mass produce by 2013.

» @chessboxer

You mean 1tb disk as in compact discs? Well I know 1tb hard disks exist, just not the one felis was implying which is the discs(cd).

by Versus - 2009-08-27 15:13
» wow..

They could have done this earlier and maybe it would have made the price of the ps3 slim even lower. Just saying....

by chessboxer - 2009-08-27 15:16
» Yep optical media

1TB optical media exists. It will be used for storage purposes by large companies, universities, hospitals etc... and will probably never make it in the home environment.

Pioneer confirmed last year that their 400GB disc will work on existing Blu-ray players.

» Sorry MS....

If there was any one system in the history of gaming that needs a complete overhaul of it's design....it is the xbox 360.

4 almost 5 years after it's release and there are still horrible failure rates and it's still loud as f*ck. If they were so concerned about "peoples investments" in their machine.... THEY WOULD release a "slim" version...instead they just try to cram more heatsinks in it....

by danielakadanny - 2009-08-28 14:18
» wow...

kinda fanboyish but I did get a laugh out of the pictures

by lavino - 2009-08-28 15:03
» 2029?! O_o

I better be playing game thru my bio-port

by Mister Common Sense - 2009-08-29 06:45
» Simple reason

The xbox 360 was designed in a hurry, and the failure rate reflects that. The cooling system blows (not in a good way.) The processors have improved, but not the s@itty x clamp heatsink mounting. The 360 case is rather wasteful of space, but still has no internal power supply.

A MAJOR redesign is badly needed for the 360. Microsoft repairs so many 360s, they just want to re-use the cases to save costs.
