Greenberg: worst RRoD problem fixed, but we won't tell what

Red Ring of Death problem have been fixed - Image 1

Have we seen the last of the Red Ring of Death? Well no, of course not. But according to Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg, they've "put the worst behind" them, and performance of the current systems are "strong." Not that I don't believe you, Greenberg, but you do have a history of being too much of a fanboy.

Greenberg (who by the way is not the official 360 spokesperson, but the Xbox Product Management Director) says:

What we do in general, the way that it works, is that they will fix it with the latest [hardware] improvements that we've applied [to current Xbox 360s]. Obviously we're continuously improving the technology inside the box, not to get too technical. So they'll apply that when they make the increments to your system.

[...] We're seeing great performance of the current systems, so we're really happy with the way they've been performing. ... From friends that have had [repairs] done as of late, I can tell you from our own internal staff that we're seeing very strong performance from a quality standpoint.

What it comes down to is isolating and figuring out the issue, fixing the issue, and the more that we can fix the issue, and know it's fixed, then we're good going forward. We've put the worst behind us on this, but we know there are a few lagging systems, and so we want to take those and make it right.

The clear vagueness of it doesn't give much comfort... but ok. If you say so. Apparently Greenberg can't talk about the exact specs of the fixed 360s because Microsoft's "attorneys would not allow" him to say that. Well, we just have to take his word for it. Now about those reports of the latest NXE update causing RRODs...

» wow

its taken them this long to finally make the console work properly and stop breaking all the time?

tbh they should have fixed this within the first year of release

I understand that 360 is beating ps3 in sales, but have the people that are making all these polls saying that who is winning the sales from PS3, 360, and Wii have they taken into fact that the people that moded their 360 warrenty was void cuz of that and bought new one's cuz they couldn't get their moded one's fixed if thats the case I think PS3 would be winning. cuz im pretty sure half if not more then the 360's that were sold were moded. therefore more had to be purchased.hat should really count on the sales just cuz a bunch of *****s moded their 360's and had to get new one's cuz the warrenty was void. Yea i cant talk bout how much the 360 sux

You're wrong because the people that mod 360s also know how to fix RRoD but not permanently. It's not the people that get their 360s modded that gets new 360s it's the people that don't that you can mod the damn thing. It's at least $100 to get fixed by M$ but cheap if you get it fixed by modders. The sales wouldn't change because hardcore fanboys still defend their 360s even after getting RRoD problems so that they can justify that they picked the right system. I don't know:( people are just stupid sometimes.

» He's right

He's right, I bought my first xbox modded, and that piece of s**it broke after 7 months. Same happend with my friend (we bought it at the same time, his xbox lived for 8 months), so what can you do, when you already have a lot of games for this broken box? You have buy another one and pray that it will last longer, like my current xbox. But right now, my xbox is getting a lot of dust, because I'm playing on my PS2:)

» ^...

Why didn't you look online for people that fixes the thing? There's a lot of people that would do it for cheap rather than buying a new system. That's what I'm doing and I end up saving so much money.

» You're barely literate

you expect us to believe you have some mathematical insight they don't?

More on the point - when you buy a modded xbox it doesn't show in the sales figures from MS because it's already accounted for. Or if you want to look at it the other way, any XBOX you purchase and mod yourself you should know the modchips will try everything they can to prevent updates so you won't be rodded.

Or you're butthurt you can't solder.

» Down with pirates

I'm sorry but if you mod your 360, the only thing at the moment you can possibly be doing with it (well other then some fan mods), is for pirating games, how you think that justifies you to have you console repaired if it breaks is beyond me. As not only are you not reimbursing MS for the loss they made on selling you the console by buying games for it, you're actively losing them money by further pirating games. If you were doing fan mods and you got RROD sorry to hear that, but if you were modding for piracy sucked in bad.

Myself I modded my original 360 console to fix the RROD before the warranty was extended to three years, I knew that I was completely voiding my warranty in doing so though at the time it seemed as though I had no alternative.

The RROD fix works for six months roughly then I have to adjust the tension on the heatsyncs to get it going for another six months.

My current system is a falcon 360 (got sick of retightening the heatsyncs on my xenon), I'm not messing with it because it runs beautifully cool. I've got it in a ventilated cupboard that uses some Zalman ZM-F3 120mm PC fans to cool my 360, amp and internet router.

So yeah HDRasta you're possibly right the hardcore PC gamers who have made the switch to 360 because it's infinitely cheaper and more fun. If the above scenario occured to another PC gamer (RROD outside of warranty period), said gamer probably would take it on themselves to fix the 360 and when they came down as cheap as they are at the moment for a falcon or a jasper they probably would buy a second one. Mind you I still use the xenon ocasionally, as I said I just got sick of retightening the heatsyncs so I don't use it as my main machine. Old 360 sits downstairs on the old tv and suround system. New falcon 360 sits on the sony bravia xbr 46" LCD upstairs. :)

by avatar76 - 2009-02-17 15:52
» Because the new ones have got HDMI also, that was the other reason I bought a new one.

Which is another glaring omision that MS left out of the original 360. I still feel that everyone who bought a Xenon 360 should get a free resolution uninhibited HDMI adapter.

I'm glad to hear they're replacing people's dead and dying Xenons with Falcon or Jasper boards though. I can't wait to see the power stats for the Valhalla board is when it comes out, it does worry me a bit having that much heat generated over such a small area though.

» Are you kidding?

You think 50% or more of Xbox 360s are modded? Does QJ have a dumbest user award?

lol I can't stop laughing, care to explain how you came to that conclusion? I guarantee you no more than 9 or 10% are modded

And even if half were modded you're argument would still be pretty poor because those people made a conscious decision to mod it and void the warranty, nobody forced them. If they buy another because they can't get it fixed free, why shouldn't that count as another sale? The only reason they couldn't get it fixed free was because of something they did

by avatar76 - 2009-02-17 16:35
» 50% probably a bit high a stat

I'ts probably more like 2% to 5%, he's got a point though that sales are possibly inflated due to people buying more then one 360. But that as I said is probably more in the realm of 2%-5% of all 360s sold are modded. Xbox1's were a much higher stat because they were easier and their was an awesome homebrew scene for the Xbox1. I miss waiting to see what awesome free software had been ported to the xbox1. I was really hopeful there'd be a homebrew scene for the 360 something like the xbox1. I'm glad the hand helds have kind of filled up that void for the home brew console scene oh and the wii. Would have loved to see the awesome power of the 360 or PS3 wielded for homebrew though. I think MS and Sony did quite alot to stop that from ever happening though. :(

Sure MS have got their cut down XNA thing but for people to enjoy the games made under that they have to pay $100 a year, $50 a year would have been acceptable to me.

» What I find to be hilarious

Is that when someone on this site tries to make a point, the people with inferior debate skills try to make themselves sound more intelligent (pooppooppilot) by degrading other people or by pointing out someone's lack of literacy ability. That is not only irrelevant, it points out how much of a douche said user really is.

Back on topic: The xbox 360 had a failed design with cheap hardware. It's about time they "righted" their wrong by extending their warranty service and repairing those that need it. Sure they could have done it faster but they didn't and there's no sense in arguing about it. To be quite honest, on the subject of pirating, I don't see how anyone can actually argue that pirates are hurting anything. The amount of people that pirate xbox 360 games is menial compared to other genres of entertainment, like dvds. Plus the fact that most people who do pirate, would probably rent rather than buy pokes holes in the theory that pirating is hurting xbox. Besides the fact that Microsoft bans most people who decide to go that route, high prices, and a bad world wide economy should be taken into consideration as to why game sales aren't what they used to be. And probably the least intelligent argument I've read thus far was that people who mod systems can fix the rrod. I know plenty of people who burn dvds but can't find their way around a computer; people who change their psp firmware, and still couldn't find their way around their own memory cards. There will always be pirates. There will always be computer technicians. There will also always be guides that tell the people who aren't pirates or technicians how to pirate or fix certain problems. Please don't assume without actually taking the time to analyze the things that are being said on these comment sections. Otherwise, your theories will add to the mountain of nonsense, garbage, and other dumb comments that already pollute the internet with pseudo facts and pointless info. If you need any further proof of these "facts," just do a quick google search for, "how to fix the rrod" and see how many "hardware specialists" (lol) have developed their own science on "how to fix the rrod." You'll also discover my personal favorite and probably the most terrible advice ever released: the infamous "towel trick." I honestly can't believe anyone would ever try that.......put a band aid on a gaping wound and see how long you last....lol

» Whoa there

nomder, I agree that insulting someone over their literacy is low, and I can see you're not stupid, but you seem to be lazy. Press enter at least every now and then, walls of text are simply no fun to read. Most people just skip over them because it's annoying

You know, tl;dr

I knew you'd respond to my post, as it seems from browsing this site you obviously live here. However, the ironic thing is that I actually DID press enter and broke the paragraph into three different pieces. Why qj didn't leave it broken is beyond me. This site also seems to have issues with quote marks. Go figure.....

by Master Chef - 2009-02-18 17:00
» Hmmm

Was that an insult? I don't believe I insulted you, but w/e. I'm on here no more than an hour a day, doesn't take but a minute to write a few sentences.

Whatever, if you did break it and it didn't go thru then forget it. QJ does have a lot of problems with stuff like that

» Look whos talking....

All this arguing is childish.... it doesnt matter what was said, who said it, or why...but who its all really directed to. I love my xbox dearly along with every other platform i got, including but not limited to: My PS3, PSP, Ipod Touch, and computer.....but your(in general) asking M$ to lose money and time on something they've already sucsessfully sold to so many. We all know how M$ got where it is today..... and as THAT as the basis even I wouldnt do it, to what?....Please you? Come on people seriously! It's always going to be universally flawed.... Lets say M$ cleans up and makes ur perfect error free console, it'd end there! Like YOU would do that in their shoes. But hey dont let me piss in your lemonade.
