Greenberg: Web browsing on a TV is a poor experience

Aaron Greenberg has shot down any hope of the Xbox 360 getting an integrated web browser. The Xbox director of product management told Edge recently that the poor internet browsing experience a TV offers is a major deal breaker.

When asked if Xbox 360 users can expect an integrated web browser in the future, Greenberg responded with a terse "No." He then elaborated, "We really believe that the web browsing experience on TV is a poor one, and the real magic is to take those web experiences and optimize them for the living room.

"That's what we did with Netflix. So, sure, you can go on the PS3 and go to Facebook and and try to navigate, but it's an absolute nightmare."

"No disrespect, there's things I love about the PS3, but that's not one of them," Greenberg added. "We want the online experience to be fun and optimised for the living room, and we'll continue to add more applications to get more richness."

Greenberg declined to give any specifics on what these new applications may be.

In this generation of home consoles, the Xbox 360 stands out as the only one without a full-blown web browser. Even the handheld DS and PSP platforms offer this functionality.

Lol. He's trying to speak for the whole community. Fail. The community wants a browser and I am sure they don't care if it is or is not the best browser they laid their eyes on.

I haven't tried browsing on a high-quality HDTV yet, but so far I've found it to be serviceable as long as the pages I visit aren't too text-heavy. What about you guys?

Our experience is only as good as what YOU (Microsoft) provide. I have my PC hooked to my television and it works great. If Sony actually strikes a deal with Mozilla to bring FireFox to the PS3, then you'll be singing a different tune I'm sure.

Everyone I know, most who have 1080p tv's but even the few with 720p have their comps hooked up to them. Works just fine, the PS3 browser is ass, but that is because of the software, not because it's hooked up in the living room.

The guy is a clown, "We really believe that the web browsing experience on TV is a poor one"

what the hell is that? what does he think a TV is?? does he somehow think they are different from lcd monitors? It's the system providing the web browser that defines the browsing experience, not the TV.

Does he really believe that people who use a TV instead of a monitor for there PC are some how getting a worse browsing experience than people who do use a monitor?

It's just a half assed excuse for not having a browser, can't believe this guy is employed... at all

If Sony can't make a perfect browser, how the hell do you expect us to port IE to the xbox and have it be any good!?

using the tv to brows the web isn't that great... but its fine when you don't want to boot up your laptop or pc to check somethings... on on another note... its one more thing the ps3 can do that xBox cant.

so what if its poor experience, IE is poor experience but we still have to install it with windows when we prefer FF or chrome...

I honestly agree with him. I think his point more has to do with the difficulty in navigating a standard web browser with a controller. So instead of adding a classic web browser they're going to make different apps for different reasons. Like how facebook and netflix work on the 360.

Yeah I think that's more what he is referring to as well. However, natal for 360 and move (or laser mouse on couch cushion) for PS3 totally changes that.

Man i'd love to surf the net using natal, like all those "futuristic" interfaces in movies where the UI hovers in the air....

Seriously, what's wrong with using a games console for just that, playing games? If you need to surf the web, use a PC! (Or a Mac, what ever is your forte)

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather browse the web on my PC rather than my PS3 any day; but that doesn't detract from the fact that the PS3 DOES have a browser that I can use. Personally, I don't think the quality of it matters, it's still nice to have.

web browsing on an hdtv is mostly the same as browsing in a pc. Now if he's trying to say that console web browsers are not good, then that's another thing.

I have my consoles and pcs hooked up to my hdtv never had a problem. I have been browsing on all of them bar the 360 of course.

what I have noticed is that microsoft are having to avoid tripping over themselves alot lately.

they can't put a browser on their system what would be the point of their facebook app and all the other stuff that they brag about when people could just access it from their browsers on the 360.

how could they justify charging for it because they would only have the option of giving it to gold members only anyway.

otherwise non gold members could just access sky player bbc iplayer and all the other stuff that you have to be a gold member to access.

the truth is that they can't add one otherwise their whole system would fall apart. its got nothing to do with tvs (which might i add are often designed to be used as pc monitors aswell).

i must say i've hated using a browser on anything but the dreamcast... and that was almost exclusively for downloading saved games.

even browsing on my 32" hdtv (small by some standards but bigger than the family tv when i was a kid) with my computer, text is almost unreadable without using zoom. once you screw with zoom, the page as a whole gets ugly.

with that said, you stated the only logical reason m$ would not give customers the choice of a proper browser...

that is why they add a pc slot to new tv's, i use my 19' tv as a monitor because it has the option and it is just as good,
this guy is just hoping people are stupid enough to believe it

the other o.s. has been strip'd and looking like browswer is next

I love how Greenberg speaks for everyone. The web browser is also used in games for instant access to DLC and web based stats. Didn't talk about that did ya Greenberg? And redtube works great on my ps3. RedTube FTW!!!!!!

Well 90% of my browsing's done on a 2.8" phone screen so i'd be more than happy to browse on a big screen from a comfy chair because i truly hate sitting on some uncomfortable office chair stuck in a corner with my computer.

That's stupid. Right now I am using my PS3's web browser just fine on my 60" 1080p television. Of course the PS3's web browser has it's flaws but I use it most of the time and it does most of the things I need just to web browse. Once you set the settings right and get used to it, you can use it quite well. This guy just wants to make excuses.

Step up microsoft. Instead of coping out on not having a web browser because you believe the experience is not so good. (PS3 i'm looking at you). Make one that is good, better than all the others (good luck, cause IE is s**t.)

Come on, guys. This is a non-issue. Browsing the web on consoles vehemently sucks compared to using a proper computer. Period.

It sucks on the PS3,
It sucks on the Wii,
It really sucks on the PSP unless you're only looking at text files,
And it completely sucks on the DS.

Why in the world would anyone (in this case, Microsoft) want to put any money towards a feature that 60%-70% of users won't use? A feature, that has yet to have a single success on -any- console?

thinking like that is exactly why sony takes options away (other o.s.)
even if it did suck , which it doesnt,
its a option that comes with the ps3 and was paid for by paying for the ps3 with the option, but im sure they will take away this browsing thing completely instead of fixing and securing it

# keyboard supportGuest 2010-04-01 06:47
you know, he could be talking about browsing without keyboards. Sure they have pop-up keyboards on the other systems but they're not quite as fast as having an actual one. Even with the keyboard attachment on the 360 controller, it's still not quite as fast. Using a stick instead of a mouse is also not as responsive. It's like using the little nub on older laptops.
But then again, they could just add keyboard and mouse usb support and all would be well...
Anyway, my thoughts on browsing... I'd like the ability to do it, but I hate actually doing it. web sites with ps3 specific rerouting piss me off (I'm looking at you Youtube). Generally though, I don't know, it just seems uncomfortable.

What I don't understand is that there's no membership fees on the PS3 or the Wii and they have web browsing, but the 360 don't and we pay fees-that's crazy.

Even if the 360's version is crap,it should still have web browsing JUST BECAUSE we pay for the live service. I mean the 360 should get everything that the other consoles have and more.

I'm this close to jumping on the PS3 bandwagon, but I'm keeping up hope for the 360!

His argument would be valid if only the 360 DID have options for iPlayer, etc.

Does he seriously think people would rather have to use ANOTHER device to just check a quick news item, catch up on iPlayer (because who knows if/when the dedicate 360 app will appear) or worse, visit the many links on the Xbox 360 itself that say "visit http:// on your PC for further information". That REALLY gets on my nerves having to move over to my PC and type in the URL instead of just "click" and it opens for me, as usually its wasn't worth the effort in the first place.

And as others have said, having a browser API built-in adds functionality to games. That's one of the few things I love about Playstation Home, how they can just embed web browser terminals in there.
