Greenberg: PS3 is hemorrhaging at sales, Lost and Damned could've beat Killzone 2 |

That didn't take too long. As soon as the NPD Charts for February was released, Microsoft exec Aaron Greenberg spews out more fighting words, claiming that the PS3 "is hemorrhaging at retail."
Well, there are still two places above...
For the month of February, the Xbox 360 landed at third place, selling 391,000 units, 29.29% more than the expected 302,500 (after the dynamic duo of the WiiDS). "That exceeds even the high end of what analysts projected we would do for the month. We've had multiple months now of sustained year over year grow, which is fantastic." The PS3 sold 276,000 units, or 23.16% more of the expected 224,100 units.
And Greenberg goes on:
You can't underestimate that we're half the price of the PS3 at a time when consumers were looking for great value. The PS3 was down in February two percent even with the launch of Killzone 2 - that's months of year-over-year declines. Xbox continues to head north while the PS3 is heading south. We're gaining share.
But what we hear from our partners is that it's not just PS3, it's also PS2 down 62 percent year over year. With that business declining, and with the PS3 business declining, it's been described as hemorrhaging at retail right now, and it just keeps getting worse.
What we're finding in our research is that a large portion of the volume we're driving with Xbox 360 purchasers is actually PS2 owners choosing Xbox for the next generation. We're switching people from the PlayStation brand over to the Xbox brand.
He also raved about the success of their titles and how over 130 have scored a grade over 80 on Metacritic, saying that "no other platform even has 100 at that level." Hmm.. could this 130 score be the one EEDAR was referring to in its study?
Speaking of games to be proud about, Greenberg was particularly hyped up over the success of Rockstar North's exclusive Xbox 360 expansion for Grand Theft Auto IV, The Lost & Damned. While he did not spew out specific numbers to reflect just how successful the addon game content was, he did confidently say that "If that content was sold at retail, it would be one of the best sellers across all platforms. It would have outsold Killzone 2."

Before the 360 launched, I doubt anyone really believed the PS3 would be in this position today. Like many, I expected the PS3 to catch up to the 360 within 2 or 3 years after launch. As it is, it looks like the PS3 will not catch up to the 360 this gen. It should overtake it eventually, but by then gamers would have probably moved onto the next generation of consoles. :|

bringing the ps2 into this argument is stupid.
you cannot expect a console that has been for ~9 years on the market to have constant and high sales today. the market is more of less "saturated" with ps2s right now. i'm actually surprised that there are still people who need to buy them.
"What we're finding in our research is that a large portion of the volume we're driving with Xbox 360 purchasers is actually PS2 owners choosing Xbox for the next generation."
that, i could believe. there are a few series that originated on ps1/ps2, and got sequels on xbox360, like star ocean and burnout. some games are being released on multiple consoles, e.g. ps3 and xbox360 (and sometimes on pc).
but are there any series that originated on xbox/xbox360 (or other non-sony consoles), that appeared on ps3?
i hope sony does not go out of gaming business, and microsoft won't become another monopoly, this time on gaming market.

PS3, I get Music, Video, Internet, Pictures, Connectivity between my 1tb External HDD set-up as a Server thru a computer. Kool games like KILLZONE 2, LPB, Soon to be release GOW3, MGS4, etc....
PS3's have had less problems than with XBOX, I wouldn't want to pay more and more to get fix the XBOX because of the ring of death. On the other hand, PS3 if there is a problem I can ship it back and if I don't have warranty I'll pay, and if Sony can't fix it, they will send me a new console that matches the price I pay for my PS3.
I have several friends who have XBOX, and all of them have gotten the Ring of Death. On the other hand PS3, a whole ton of people have it and only 1 had a problem, and he already sent it and is getting it fix and delivered right back.
I dont own a PS3 yet! but my friend has let me borrow his, and I've been playing with it almost everyday. I'm going to indeed buy a PS3 (Because I already have KILLZONE 2 which I bought even without a Playstation 3) Its the greatest kick-azz game. Finished whole campaign, and doing Online. Already got the medal for being in the top 4% of the week.
PS3! Will Last, all they need is to step-up their game even more.
Like my friends said "XBOX was build for Failure"
P.S. Here comes WW5 (You'll know......)

Ok this is my problem and no I'm not a fan boy I own all 3 systems. Out of all the above numbers the 391,000 Xboxs how many were replacment systems for the RRoD issue. I myself have been through 2 Xboxs so far both RRoD and my second console has been penny fixed just for the simple fact i'm tired of buying new ones. The first system i had was just plain dead and it was cheaper to buy a new one then to have microsoft fix my old one. Now I still have my launch PS3. Now with that said it does have issues here and there like hard restarting after quiting a game but nothing that has me running to buy a new one or getting the one I have repaired. Please feel free to leave your own comments about my thoughts and thanks for taking the time to read this post.

But seriously I don't care what is selling better, the Dreamcast kinda flipped and screwed Sega over but it was a good system.. If the PS3 has games I want, I'll buy it, and play the games. I don't care if it's outsold 20 to 1, I just want to play.

The Wii wasn't out either, it launched around the same time as the PS3, and yet the Wii quickly caught up and overtook the 360 sales, and continues to outsell both the 360 and PS3 in monthly sales.
So the point I'm making is that whilst it's true the 360 had a year's headstart, that doesn't account for the current monthly sales.
The PS3 really isn't making any ground on the 360 sales. Hopefully a price cut will stimulate PS3 sales.

Instead of saying "sell more then the console that isnt even out" I should of said, "convert ppl from ps2 to 360". True gamers (including myself) werent just gonna wait for the ps3 with all HD gaming goodness on the 360.
The man is acting like 360 sales are leaps and bounds better then ps3, and i
for one dont believe that they are. It cost more then 360 yet the it still keeps
pace in terms of sales, monthly and total sales included. (I mean all countries, not US and Japan only).
If the two systems were released simultaneously I think it would be a different
story. You see I really don't care much about numbers(sony doesnt pay me)
but I just don't understand why this guy is bragging so much. They aren't doing anything amazing.
But we'll see wat a price cut does for the ps3...*That is all*

they developed it, they basically just bought it from Rockstar.

Er, because that's part of his job? Haven't we read similar brags from Sony numerous times too, including recently from Scott Steinberg. That's their job. I never really understand why people get upset/annoyed over such obvious PR.
"Nintendo should be bragging the Wii is a sales monster"
Er, they do. :)
"if sony catches up they could brag, but Microsoft is bragging about beating ps3 after releasing 1 year earlier, c'mon."
Except I can't find where he talks about the total sales for each console. All I'm reading are comments relating to the monthly sales and sales trends.

Last gen, Sony's PS2 completely wiped the floor with the competition, whereas this gen, the 360 is not only holding it's own against the PS3, but has actually extended it's lead during a year which saw the release of some of Sony's 'Big Gun' games (MGS4, LBP, KZ2 etc), and is still slightly outselling the PS3 each month worldwide. IMO (reluctantly), that IS something to brag about. :|

Just give it a break and go online and start fragging. Actually use the thing you bought, instead of buying it then say how much better it is and barely using it. Geez.

360 has sold on average 734,000 units a month...
PS3 has sold on average 757,000 units a month...
So despite increased sales because of the recent extreme cheapness of 360, PS3 is still leading overall in month to month sales durring the it's lifetime so far....

MUHAHAHAHAA
if PS3 can sell just as much as xbox can sell per month being about twice as expensive M$ should seriously have something 2 worry about.
according 2 the concept of Supply and Demand.....when the PS3 gets a price drop....crapbox sales will be nuked

Thanks for pointing that out without flaming me and calling me a retard! Thats always a nice surprise on this site

As mentioned already, the PS3 'was' catching up to the 360, but then the 360 has pulled ahead again after the price cut last year boosted it's sales (hence I'm waiting to see what happens after the PS3 price cut).
To use similar spin tactics, we can just as easily argue that if both consoles continue to sell at the average figures you've given, then with just 23K more sold each month for the PS3, it will take the PS3 about 347 months (29 years) to close the 8 million sales gap between itself and the 360. ;)
Oh the joys of twisting statistics. :)

He's right though, if L+D was a retail disc launch it'd beat killzone 2. But that's cause it released around the same time SF4, which gives it a 2 weeks head start. Not to mention it already have an established fanbase(GTA fans) and it being playable using the GTA4 disc. But using it as a counter point against it is ridiculous. Ones DLC, the other is a brand new title which hasn't established itself...unless you go back to the KZ1 days which didn't do so hott. I expect the sales of KZ2 to rise when the March NPD report comes out.
