GoldenEye 007 for XBLA canceled because of money?

GoldenEye 007 - Image 1In the latest EGM issue, it was revealed that there was a discreet effort on the Microsoft camp to bring the classic GoldenEye 007 back to life on the Xbox Live Arcade. Two months before the project's completion, the project would be canceled for totally mysterious reasons.

A lot of us were left wondering how something that could have made a lot of sense (and money) could be scrapped. In a new site post, 1UP would reveal some possible reasons why.

According to 1UP's post, original devs Rare Ltd. and publisher Nintendo initially had a pact with Microsoft to have the title come back in XBLA form with the same graphics, maps, and the addition of online multiplayer play. The deal fell apart, apparently, when Microsoft and Nintendo couldn't agree on the part where money was involved.

It was explained that there could have been two options: First was a one-time deal where Nintendo would receive a hefty sum. Another option was for Nintendo to get periodic cuts on what the game makes over at XBLA. Both options had their pros and cons, but for some reason, the two game giants never came to terms.

We have no way of confirming if this was true, but knowing Quartermann's reputation, his predictions and rumors are right most of the time. It's a shame that this piece of gaming history couldn't be brought back. At least not at this point.

Any and all web petitions on that site are pretty much useless.

Maybe so, but it's good to see people group together for a common cause. It took all of 5 secs to sign the petition.

It shows microsoft or nintendo that alot of people really want this to happen, only takes like a minute anyway.

Looks like always greedy Nintendo botched the deal. They want it for the virtual console since those games are better than the new Wii games. We all know how Nintendo is with game liscensing...

Goldeneye was great for it's time, but the gameplay has not endured the test of time well. No jumping, silly crosshair system, ridiculous amounts of auto-aim, and bland-as-hell levels can't compete with games of today. I tried to go back and play it, but I just couldn't anymore.

» Would have been a lot of fun.

But if they could make online multiplayer for Goldeneye, why couldn't they have done they same for Halo when they rereleased it on xbox live? If they had done that I definitely would download Halo onto my 360. Goldeneye was the first multiplayer game and first person shooter that I ever got into. Great game for its time.

» wtf?

Is it really that hard to agree with Goldeneye for Xbox Live?? what money issues could be involved? The game is fwuckin over 10 years old. There's only one option left for play Goldeneye online, and that is to play it on an emulator.

Perfect Dark was better. The first game, not the 360 version. I'd download Perfect Dark anyday.

"It took all of 5 secs to sign the petition."

And that's why they don't mean anything.
