Generations of Gaming |
Ó
Progression through gaming technology has happened fast. It has only been 20 years since gamers were amazed by the graphics and gameplay of the NES. Today, we see consoles like the Xbox 360 creating realistic worlds and complex environments. Gaming is definitely not what it used to be.The saddest part of technological advancement is the lack of appreciation towards the past that comes with it. It makes me sad to see gamers of today ridicule old games that I used to play.
A website called Addicted Geek conducted an experiment. They took a 12 year old gamer, dubbed Mini Geek, who hasn't played any consoles older than the sixth generation (PS2, GameCube, Xbox) and gave him a Nintendo 64 with Goldeneye 007, the classic title that helped shape the FPS genre into what we know today.
After roughly 20 seconds of playing, Mini Geek dismissed the game as the boring with "clunky graphics" and a "forced" storyline. Mini Geek called up several of his friends to try out multiplayer, but after a few minutes they "tossed it aside" and began a game of Halo 2.
It breaks my heart to see gamers of today have no respect for older titles. As they become more and more exposed to games with photorealistic graphics and spot-on controls, they come to expect that level of expertise from all titles, even ones of the past. Gamers like Mini Geek don't understand that titles like Goldeneye 007 were a stepping stone to more advanced titles like Halo 2.
The point of all these is to provide a warning towards all of you. We are entering the seventh generation of gaming, and it will be easy to forget about past generations. No matter if you are going to buy a PS3, an Xbox 360, or a Wii, do not lose sight of the games and consoles that brought us to where we are today. There is nothing more arrogant than someone who does not know the history behind a game or a system, just like the kids who refereed to Majora's Mask as Zelda 2.
"History is who we are and why we are the way we are." --David C. McCullough

The mechanics in Goldeneye are used in most fps games nowadays (particularly Console FPS) and even tho it is important to know how such and such game contibuted in a larger scope I don't think anyone would be too keen on using steam powered cars nowadays, just because it's old. Rather than trying to force a history composed only of old games we should be making a history which reflects on their(the old games) importance in nowaday gaming
yah that is definitely sad, goldeneye was definitely and n64 classic. people need to appreciate those timeless classics
20 seconds seems a bit exaggerated. First of all it is wrong to comment on the story line after only 20 seconds and besides with GoldenEye being based on a movie of course the story line may seem a bit more straight than with other games. I never played Halo but I played a lot of other FPSs and personally I think that modern FPSs feature a much more forced gameplay/storyline than GoldenEye.
After all I am not surprised. I grew up with a NES and know a lot of old games but playing NES titles today that I never played before really isn't all that much fun.
nocomment
i loved golden eye and pd, i grew up on them, but if i had halo 2...***** golden eye. Im all for appreciating history and all that jazz, but if your a kid of the 6th gaming gen. then by all means play your halo, have fun, make your own history.
If they say that kids are the future then we are screwed...
These are the little kids who think the best FPS made is mediocre halo, adn reckon the best mp3 player is an ipod, and it is the first mp3 player ever made :P, they are commenly reffered to as pree teen dumbasses or more frequently n00bs / n00blets.
Besides when it somes to FPS games Halo is mediorce anyways; though multi is fun
Why does it break your heart? Its a *****n twelveyearold =D You dont get a developed sense of good games, regardless of how old they are, until you are in your twenties.
its a moot point
its the same as when you hear an old person say ' in my day we had to...' and then he tells about how there was no electricty at night and that couldnt see anything ...or that he had to walk 8 miles to school every morning.
lol ....this means you have become the cliche 'old man' . considering how fast the technology is changing compared everyother technology such as cars and motors, which change slowly compared to computers, this rapid change has made us change into old men faster than normal.
I feel that aint so bad ...its not just a computer game specific 'problem' , but the the games are a mircrocosm of the effect progressive change has on people who grew up with more primitive tech. they thought it was the best at the time and devoted time to it and then to have it dismissed by soemone from a younger generation is bound to hurt a bit.
however....i have nephews that are 5 8 and 9 and they play mario and sonic and lemmings on my psp...some games especially the mario and lemmings are like great books movies..it doesnt matter where technology moves to they still stand out. if they gave that kid mario 3 he'd actually play it. the thing about golden eye is that HAS been bettered and u cant ask a kid to appreciate soemthign that is just inferior....but i bet if you gave him soemthing like dax on the psp , and maro 3 on the nes...he'd vote mario everytime.
i think they should stop focussing on graphics and work more on gameplay
"You dont get a developed sense of good games, regardless of how old they are, until you are in your twenties."
You can, but not if your trained by the media to think that graphics are the most important aspect of games. I remeber playing Secret of Mana when I was 12 and my biggest complaints with the game were that the fully charged attack was too long and inaccurate and that once again Square uses the generic 'Resistance VS Evil Empire' plotline. Sure as I got older I realised that the magic system wasn't as fantastic as I thought and that the game isn't as great as I remebered (although still good). However these says you'd be hard pressed to make a 12 year old even touch a game like that these days, because the "graphics are lame".
Kids WILL play crap games if they look nice, and the sales charts back that up 100%. Its a sad, sad thing, but its true. And gaming is going to have a tough time making it through this next generation of tasteless gamers, lets just hope it comes out the other side in one piece.
I am fourteen, and some of my favorite games is Banjo Kazooie, The Ocarina of time, Majoras Mask, Banjo Tooie, Any Mario game and the list goes on... Really alot of newer games do not really give me any excitement... I like Halo 2, but I feel it is overrated to some degree... Grand Theft Auto, III, IV, V is probably one of the greatest sixth generation titles... But I would choose Super Mario All Stars over GTA Because it is so much fun... Me and my freinds constantly argue over which is better... Current generation and over, or previous ones... I always choose previous ones when it come to almost any genre of gaming... That's just what I think, and I really don't believe games can achieve the same greatness that the N64, or Snes brought... (Sorry for mostly Nintendo Titles, but I find the jewels of those to be some of the greatest.)
Little kids are annoying and dumb
Who cares. Our parents thought we were lame too because we didn't appreciate the music of the 50's and 60's. So.... that's just the way it is.
I know. Sad, is it not?
This happens with everything, not just video games. We laugh when we see the 60 ton "personal computer" of the 1960's. You have a point, but way to be melodramatic. It's a little kid dismissing a video game. Honestly, let's report NEWS on this site.
goled eye is a fun game. the best part of golden eye is the cheats and how u can place like a million remote mines on anything you want. I gonna get it for the wii arcade thing. the best part of the game is thee first level were u kill the guy taking a ***** lol. that ame too me was fun and will always be fun. i used to play halo for computer but it got boring because it was repeative shoot hit shoot hit throw grenaade. k all games are like well some. goleden eye was fun becase it was soo cheesey. it was the fact that you could stick mines on anything and make epoles head big that made it fun
gl with goldeneye on wii's virtual console as it's Rare intellectual property - and them being owned by Microsoft I don't think that we will see GoldenEye or Perfect Dark anytime soon.
i performed a similar experiment with both of my children. they were used to playing games on the PSP, PS2, and XBOX. i decided it was time to pull out the gamecube, dreamcast, N64 and the old NES. to my suprise they didn't care for the N64 at all. they played it for a day or so and then went back to their usual routine of using the newer consoles. then they started on the dreamcast. they played that one for close to a week and lost interest in sonic. the only systems they play now are the PSP, PS2, gamecube, and the NES. there is something about the NES that kids to this day are completely hooked on. they play that system just about as much as they play the PSP, and most of the time they are playing the NES emulator on the PSP when they do play. the kids are 5 and 9.
on a side note. contra is a lot easier than i remembered it being. i somehow remembered the 30 man cheat and beat the game in about 15 minutes.
I still play old games(i mean like games made like 10-16 years ago) and yet people do talk about me playing them, but i don't really care. 2-d games are still in the market, and to my understanding graphics is not everything. Most people i know only care for graphics. Well, what can you do, newbies come play new consoles and don't know much about the past consoles. I'd say leave them to what they want to do, if they are interested in old consoles okay then if not whatever. Bah, we hardly know much about our history, LOL. But, yeah old games are still fun, but just not as widely played, its natural though. Same thing with computers actually, not many people appreciate the past of computer, without them we would less likely have consoles or the many things we use nowadays.
The old games are OLD! Get it through ur stupid ass brain.. noone wants to play goldeneye when they can play call of duty 2... jus like not many people want to use microsoft dos when they can use microsoft windows xp... its fact and get over it!
I understand what your talking about, I have been playing videogames since I was 5 and Im 20 now, and I will never forget the day I first picked up a nintendo controller, I even got to play the original Pong cause my uncle still had it and now Im playing rockstars table tennis, we have come such a long way, it used to be the light gun that you use to play duck hunt with, and now its the motion senseing controller, its nothing short of amazing. But I am sick of the 12 year olds on halo 2 the game is rated M 17+, but you cant blame retailers all the time because I did see a dad buy his 8 year old san andreas, but it was also obvious that the dad didnt understand the contents of the game. anyway good article keep them up.
I don't think anyone can actually sit down and play goldeneye these day's. The game just didn't age very good. You definetly would have had more success with some 16 bit era games or even ps1/saturn.
Wow. If he thinks boring halo multiplayer is better then goldeneye....jeez. He really does have to appreciate where todays games come from. Im 16, and I still remember the day that my dad went to go buy Goldeneye which he originally wanted for himself. And I ended up confiscating
lol it was an overrated game anyway along with halo. Play a real fps on a console.
i wish i could just get my hands around this little kids neck. i realize goldeneye is just a memory now but come on it had a way better storyline and it was much more realistic. maybe i just like realistic games but come on. a multiplayer game of goldeneye requires way more skill than a multiplayer run and gun game of halo. 12 years old sorta gives him a excuse because at that age they re just dumb. all they know how to do is turn on the xbox and beat off to halo
«on a side note. contra is a lot easier than i remembered it being. i somehow remembered the 30 man cheat and beat the game in about 15 minutes»
UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, B, A, START
=D
Im 16 and yes i start playing at 3 years old with my parents Nes and grew up with all the new consoles. Sometimes i still play my old SNES games (I dont have my nes anymore, gave it to my aunt and always play when i visit her) and N64 games! I remember, when i was 10 i was always renting games on N64 and still today when i saw these games preplayed, well i buy them! We can't do anything about these kids except letting them grow up, they just don't know what they missed!
THE ARTICLE CREATOR IS A LOSER!!!!!! THIS IS WAY TOO MUCH BULL*****!!! gET BACK TO WORK AND STUDY!!!
it's a shame that kids don't respect these types of things, I have my goldeneye cartridge still in my N64 which is STILL hooked up to my TV. I also have a PS2 but I choose to play goldeneye because I liked the gameplay I thought it was awesome when it came out and when anyone here thinks of an N64 the first game tha comes to thought is either Super Mario 64 or Goldeneye, I myself think that Halo and Halo2 sucked in comparrison to Goldeneye for one reason, the weapons in Halo and Halo2 suck. They spent sop much time polishing the games mechanics and graphics so at the end they just sorta threw in come crap weapons. I can beat all the halo games with just the shotgun and the plasma pistol. in Goldeneye there was much more to choose from, PP7 (silenced), RCP90, Grenade Launcher, Laser, WRIST WATCH!!!!!!! come on, Goldeneye had alot of good original ideas and it'a a shame that the younger crowd will never learn to respect these gaes that captured the hearts, minds, and jobs of(or for some) others.
it's a very sad day for these games....
UM HELLOO? WTF DO YOU ALL THINK NINTENDO IS TRYING TO DO WITH THEIR GODDAMN VIRTUAL CONSOLE
It is sad kids dont know the history of video games. I hope the Wii can bring back the old games and show what games have became to today.
AR
10 years from now if you come back and play halo 2 or any of the other games that seem to be on top of the world right now they will seem like garbage, its just how things go.
My brother grew up in the newer generation of consoles, but he prefers his NINTENDO SIXTY FOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OUR games over anything else. He even likes hey you! pikachu, both legends of zeldas, Goldeneye (only multiplayer) and mischief makers. Now when the Wii launches we shouldn't have to deal with kids not knowing their roots. Things will be fin
also *****s...
to the guy who says the iPod isnt the best mp3 player, it may not be, but its pretty damn good and affordable, and whatever techie stupid mp3 player you have that no one else does definately isnt getting you laid and no one cares.
and halo 2 is a damn fine game. im sick of these people who think they are such 'hardcore' gamers so halo 2 isnt good enough for them. ya, counterstrike or graw is waaaaay harder....ya right. if halo 2 is so easy why dont you enter a MLG tournament and beat everyone and make all that money? if its so easy, you shouldnt even need to practice.
its just like those stupid scene kids with music. they like a band, band becomes popular, band is no longer good enought for them. i would bet everything i own if halo 2 werent so popular all these 'hardcore' gamers would be wearing their thumbs to the bone on it.
I understand that he grew up with current generation games because he is 12, but that gave me a sick feeling in my stomach when i read that he tossed it aside to play Halo 2. I am 15 and i grew up with SNES, N64, and PS1. My favorite FPS in the 90's is Goldeneye, heck its still my favorite now. Halo 2 is a good game but i still perfer to play Goldeneye and Perfect Dark over it. I like 6th and 7th generation games and all (heck i have a Xbox 360 and a Nintendo GC) but i perfer the classics over anything.
i think it unfair that you all think that kids 13- are immature halo lovin retards. for the last time, it doesnt apply for every single person! im 13, and can remember when i first got a SNES played donkeykkong country on it and seeing the SSB commercial (lol pikachu was flying in the sky) and i can proudly say i apreciate the classics usually more than the newer games. shurer i bought GTA, but mostly so i could play my SNES. i didnt grow up during the NES era (unfourtunately ) but i sstill appreciate the games that shaped the future games.lol we went from super mario world, to the new super mario bros. wow its amazing if u think about it
I completely agree, I'm 13 too, my first game system was a snes, and I played DKC all of the time too (wish I still had it). plus i've never played a M rated game.
A previous poster said it best:
"Goldeneye just didn't age well." And it really didn't. Games like Mario 64 can age better because their genre isn't so overused now adays.
I'm not gonna say that kids
My first system was NES because my mom had one. When I was 6 we got an SNES. Then I just made the jump to Dreamcast. Then the 6th generation. My cousins and friends had N64. And had Goldeneye. He hated it. But I loved it. So I was wondering. Anyone willing to give their life to the mafia to kill this kid?

I'm not gonna say that kids over 13 are idiots, because they're not. They just grew up in a newer gaming generation where everything is about graphics (We're all guilty of this). If a game doesn't look good, it doesn't hold interest, which is a shame for brilliant games like 'Psychonauts'.
Personally, I love old school games like the 2d Castlevanias, Megamans, and especially Ninja Gaiden for the NES, but that's because that was my gaming generation. I personally despise anything Atari (2600) because there was no gameplay and (gasp) the graphics were horrible. It's no surprise to me that the next gen gamers feel the same about games before the PS2.
Here's hoping that Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo bring back "old school" classics for the new gen, because there are great games that young gamers can still enjoy.
... As for me, I've got 2000 ROMs to keep me in a last-gen 'Gaming Valhalla'.
I don't understand why kids don't like these games...well maybe since I have been playing games since I was about 1 and a half...(sad story...yet very true...then again..good for me!) ANYWAY...but even thought I started with an amiga (good stuff - Shawdow of the Beast, Bubble Bobble and Newzealand Story(greatest game ever!!!)) I still like the older stuff than that, I think it is great and very fun...sure the graphics are not amazing but graphics do not make the game it is the gameplay and I think that Goldeneye was a GREAT game...but...it is depressing that kids hate games because of graphics....
We are comparing the best FPS of 5th gen to 4th gen. Goldeneye vs. Halo 2.
Both have great multiplayer, great multiplayer levels,...but Halo wins hands down. Though Goldeneye + Perfect Dark are still 'Classics'. Perfect Dark Zero is actually a DAMN good multiplayer. The single player doesn't compare though.
and i decided to put it up here too
this kid is nothing compared to my one friend. if any of you have read the 200 greatest games of all time from EGM, you know Super Mario Bros. was #1. well my friend he likes mario but kept saying that Resident Evil 4 should have been first. he also kept saying it was an “instant classic” i don’t think he realized that this covered games from pong and up…
i just wanted to shoot the s**t out of him
and if youde ask me my fav game all time, it be either
- 007 goldeneye 64
- zelda OOT 64
- starfox 64
ya i grew up with a 64 and have the utmost respect for it, and even nes game like mario bros 3, contra, and the like.
Wow, first you say "kids are lame", then spell a simple word like obnoxious wrong. Please gtfo
kicking graphics out the *****ing window, and bringing back the gameplay.
(mind you wii will have great graphical power nonetheless - http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=12859 )
take wii sports, the tennis one. horrid graphics! most peeps at e3 said it was the best sports title on the floor!
Hey I am 16 years old so back when I was a kid goldeneye was the best thing out on the market. Graphics didnt even reach my mind all i thought about was how fun multiplayer was. In fact i think goldeneye still has the best mulitplayer engine in gaming to this day. You cant beat constant fighting with so many different scenarios and gameplay. And when i ge tired of playing my xbox 360 always winds up getting problems, I reach deep down into my closet and take out my trusty old n64 and goldeneye call up some friends and have a good old multiplayer match. Microsoft or PS3 should buy the rights to the game and remake or just run it through their graphics engine and it would be a guarenteeed hit.
Aculey screw microsoft and sony goldeneye deserves to go to Nintendo Wii.
I'm 14, yet most of my game time goes to a game from 1998. Some of the best games were made years ago.
who cares if some little *****s know about great games of the past or not they make themselves look like the *****s that they are!! Most gamers know about all the great games anyway
I'm 14 and grew up playing SNES and PS1
I remember playing NBA JAM with my Dad
or Mario and Andretti racing were my favorite titles for SNES
hell I haven't liked a single stock or indy car racing game since Andretti Racing for the PC
"Besides when it somes to FPS games Halo is mediorce anyways"
I hate these idiots who think their opinion is fact. If you dont like halo no one cares its your opinion.
Goldeneye was just one of those games that anyone could play even if they didnt like gaming or hadnt played before, sort of like halo1. ive played coop with people on halo whove never played games before and they can just get straight into it.
awsome mutliplayer. me and my friends would play every day splitscreen. every once in a while wed play some mario kart 64
i have figgured out a solution for this if any newblet to our gaming(if you were there in that gen and you played the game and sayed you did not like it that is different)gen(i .e. the classics)then they shath be casturated >.< no one get's away with saying bad things about classics >.> if it's a female gamer that is saying these things we will figure something out but c'mon #1 i see what you mean bout cars but video games r like movies they entertain us not get us to point a to point b so as them being like movies that would mean that they can still have their own marathons(big multiplayer mashes)and every1 new to this old skool of gaming should respect that
ok halo is a good game in all but damnit! there r way better fps's than fregging halo im getting tired of hearing halo this halo that wake up pple play on pc or a different x-box game because we all know how many fps's that system has not as many as sport's games but meh so yeah it's fun but you guy's r relly making it way more overrated than what it is alredy
halo+overration =many annoyed gamers x CRAP!!!!!!
Goldeneye is by far the greatest game ever created.
Halo just doesn't compare to its brilliance.Do not even talk about Halo 2....It was siht.
Most of these 'Old-school' gamers think all these next generation games are crap and are not what they used to be. Usually saying the game is 99% graphics and 1% story and gameplay. Well i agree with that. But these next generation gamers who hate old school games are no different than the music generation of today who hate 'oldies' music that thier parents and grand parents listen to. Im sure you wouldn't have much respect for those boring annoying oldies songs that made music what it is today. In this blog, you sound like my grandmother who thinks its ashamed and saddened that youths now-adays hate her oldies music. Get with it, the new generations always ridicule the past.
for me I'm 21years old, and I have to say I started playing games only with sega genesis ( didn't had a nes, and not even an snes ). I played snes RPGs a lot on emulators ( chrono trigger =D, ff4, 5, 6, etc, etc ), but old FPS are really gay, fps is graphics and playability, you just regress with the time... and for adventure games or 2d adventure, graphics are good, but playability is the most important, in an old snes or n64 or psx game it's wack, but 2d games like castlevania sotn is the same if you played them when they got out or 5-10years after, anyway it's 2d, and the 2d is always good. But old nes games were impossible and really boring, and snes games were OK, but the better were all RPGs, and on n64 you don't have any good games anyway, that's why I bough a psx =D, and now my old psx games are boring? RPGs are all great even with poor graphics ( ff7 wow ), but shooters or adventure games... WOUACK!! even my ps2 for shooter is not enough now!, power to PC ( and ps3 when it comes out )
I'm playing capcom classic remixed on psp and I have to say the old games story is really not good, and I mostly play a game for it's story so... old story like: go rescue the princess ( not only peach ) is really boring!
OH and stop saying new generation alawys drag down the old, I don't say stupidity like: my old pentium1 was good, I evolve like evrybody should!!! new games are always better because it's mostly the same devoppers than for the old games, with LOT MORE experience and LOT MORE power into their hands.
( ps: kojima started the stealth action because the old computer could not put more than 1 bullet moving in one screen plus 1-2 soldier, now the stealth is a genre of it's own, everything evolved for the better, so it's normal the new generation don't like the old generation of trials&errors, now they can play the results )
Old-School games are classics. Since we're older, we got to experience the pinnacle of technology that was offered in those times. However, kids these days grew up on current gen and next generation consoles, that's all they ever know.
I can still pick up Megaman 2, Super Mario Brothers 3, and GoldenEye 64 and still say "This is fun." Because that's the best thing we had when I was younger.
Since the PS2 and Xbox is the best thing they have, that's what they'll find appealing. And soon when they get older, they'll pick up Halo 2 or Half-Life 2, and say "I remember this." and play it they'll say "This was a cool game."
Kids will only find games appealing based on the generation of technology offered to them in their lifetime. That's really all there is to say.
ok let's just say that you created a work of art like a painting of somesort or something like that or you created a game sure mabee you would like a newer version of whatever that is typical but you would still like what you have created b4 am i right? how would you like it if some1 just went up and said(let's just say that this is you first work of art)that it sucks because it's old, gay isnt it? my point is just like in my first post here games are like those old action movies that we all grew up watching even today we can still go back and watch these movies because they were good at the time they may not really be all that good or good at all but my point is, is that because you liked it then, you should like it now and not just dismis it becuase it is old clunky non-high deff that would just be a bad way of looking at things that would just mean that nothing is good enough for you, you have no means of going back and doing stuff that you once liked way long ago and im not saying you have to change but i am saying that i find that to be a verry sad way to veiw things that you do with your life
Fact is, Goldeneye is dated as hell. Sure it was alright for its time but it for one was overated, and now, is completely surpassed by the fastest moving genre. Also, console FPSes where *****e in those days, which is why it was considered so good, although on the PC market even then it looked dated. Other games have aged well though, such as Mario 64. In fact, people still have fun playing Pong and tetris, so to say that all past games are getting underevaluated is stupid, just ones which have been surpased, and didnt deserve the praise they got when the got it have been devaluated.
Kill that little kid! If he *****in thinks that Goldeneye 007 is boring then kill him i still have that game to this day and it is not BORING! I have been playing Goldeneye 007 since i was around 7! I am now going to be 16 so almost 9 *****ing years and i still think it is not boring especially on multiplayer! This little piece of ***** cannot appreciate good games.
I was in the gaming with Nintendo 64 at first but I still respect all the older titles since those were the roots of bigger franchises. Super Mario Bros. was a great game that Advanced to Super mario world an even greater game and then Super mario 64 turned it 3D annd is the best Mario game ever. So listen if GoldenEye wasn't there you wouldn't be playing Halo or GoldenEye.
It's just a shame that a person can look at Goldeneye or any other games that were exceptional and say things like "boring". if it weren't for these "boring" games, then we wouldn't have all this new fangled toys such as halo or even doom3. I dare anyone here who dosn't like these games to Sit down and actallu PLAY the games the only way you would say these games suck is because you have never experienced them first had. So do it, play the games then come back and run your mouth.
I'm 18, and currently work at Wal-Mart. We have 5 gaming systems set up. A PS2, an xBox 360, a Gamecube, a GBA, and a DS. We have New! Super Mario Bros. in the DS, Super Mario Advance 4: SMB3 in the GBA, Naruto in the GC, Fight Night in the 360, and Genji in the PS2. 9/10 times anyone under the age of 14 plays the GBA, because they know what's good for them.
I remember the joy of beating SMB3 for the first time when I was 2, 2 years after it came out. My parents had bought it for Christmas, and we all played it. It was my first video game I ever played, and it was also the last one I have played (this morning, actually). More people have bought the SMB3 GBA game than have bought Halo from our store, and about half of the people who buy it are young kids who grew up in 4th and 5th generations. That is one game that never gets old. I even tell people that I consider it the best game ever created.
Last week this hardcore gamer came in and was talking to me about PSP hacks and how awesome it is to play the old games on the road with a PSP. He said something that has become one of my new favorite phrases: "The better a game is, the more you scream and yell when you lose or the plot takes an ugly turn." (For example: "I'm sorry, but the Princess is in another castle.")
As for Halo v. Goldeneye, I give both games credit for helping to advance gaming. I would prefer Goldeneye anyday (and look forward to playing it on the PSP soon!), but that may be because I grew up with it. I still enjoy playing Halo with friends, but would never spend money on it. I would, however, buy Goldeneye again if I could find it. Anyone wanna give it to me?
And to the person that said an iPod is great and affordable: The Creative Zen Nano Plus has 1GB of storage, has a FM Radio, a Voice Recorder, a 3.5mm microphone jack so you can plug it into a CD player and record directly off of the CD, and you can even record off of the radio. Price? $70. iPod Nano 1GB price? $150. Which one's better, now?

PEACE OUT FELLOW GAMERZ
During the NES years (1985-1991) I used to look at Atari 2600 games and comment on how bad they looked (like in Adventure, your character was a square.) Atari 2600 was still a step up for other systems of the time like the Magnavox Oddysey, which had simple, awful graphics. Of course, they weren't much fun either. NES managed to make games much more fun in addition to better graphics. Once game systems got descent 3d capabilities, the industry made a huge leap forward. Yeah the graphics aren't the greatest but the games are as fun as the new ones. The only differences are polygon count and texture resolution really. It's just a normal reaction to see something much older than you're used to and say it's crap.
@67: I agree full heartedly with your statement, but I don't the Super Mario Bros. 3 was the best game ever... lol but very close, anyways you make some really good points, I think what made Goldeney so great was the Multiplayer, one thing about this that is different then the common use of Halo(PC) and Halo2 games is the use of online play, i'm 15 I don't remember how old I was when I got goldeneye, but I remember that the second day I had it I invcited my friends over to play it, about 25 min into playing, much like monopoly, we were all pissed off at eachother, now, you can get pissed off whiule playing online, but it's just not the same feeling as having the guy thats pissing you off right next to you, i'm not saying people should just stop playing online alltogether, but every once in awhile just invite some friend over to play in a single room in a single house, no headsets, no broadband connection, and watch I bet that Halo asnd Halo2 will be alot more fun.
@68: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHA OMG U SOLD UR N64 LMAO OMG HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHA I still have mine lol, man well my advice to you is every sunday and saturday search for yard sales...
im 16 and yes and i have 2 shamefully admitt.. I LOVE RETRO GAMES mame, snes n64 gotta love dem classics But the best part of those games gettin old is there CHEAP i went down to a video store the other day and they were sellin classics like paper mario and conkers bfd for 5$
I believe that if you cant appreciate the classics like nes and snes, let alone goldeneye and N64, you cant learn to love the newer games and you wont appreciate them as much as you should. That kid wouldnt be able to recognize a good classic game if it bit him in the ass
wow and you guys say barney is childish. the kid`s entiled to this own point of views on what he thinks its not like eveyone on the universe has to beleave super-mario-bros1 or 3 and anything on nes is *****ing-perfect(which its not) and as much as i like goldeneye i wouldnt get upset and ape***** just cause somebody elese did`nt like it ='< OH BOOWOO KIDS DON`T LIKE A OLD-GAME I LIKE NOW IM GONNA GO LISTEN TO LINKIN-PARK AND CUT MYSEFE WITH A RAZOR
Your all a bunch of morons for *****ing about a simple point of view,
