Gears of War 2
executive producer Rod Fergusson has revealed that an all-new experience-based ranking system is coming with the game's third title update, acting as a precursor to the upcoming Snowblind map pack. Fergusson told GameSpot that the new system is their answer to gamers' problems with the TrueSkill system:

Basically, it was a matter of listening to what people were saying about the TrueSkill system. We spent a lot of time on the forums and talking with other players, and we were noticing that people were sort of plateauing really quickly. ... So to remedy the issues, we figured we should impose a system where people could earn experience; even if they lost the match they would feel like they're moving up the ladder. We want them to feel like they're progressing, gaining levels of experience in multiplayer play.

Level cap has been set at 100. On their way to the top level, players will gain the following level-based Achievements: Rookie Gear (level 5), Seasoned Gear (level 15), Battle-Tested Gear (level 25), Battle-Hardened Gear (level 50), and Veteran Gear (level 100). The last two require the Snowblind map pack. There are also four other unnamed achievements.

Once the new system is in place, the old TrueSkill rankings be hidden but it will still be used under the hood to "set up the most competitive matches possible".

The free title update is slated to come out on March 24, a week before the Snowblind map pack. Title Update 3 will also have a new auto-balancing feature that swaps in bots to replace players who drop out in the middle of a match and four new maps (Grindyard, Courtyard, Under Hill, and the return of Gears 1's Fuel Depot).

Fuel Depot's returning?! Wicked!

» Agreed

Fuel Depot was my favorite map from the original, and as long as the remake is faithful, it will probably return to the number 1 spot on my list. Honestly though, IMO, no one makes a map like the Gears team. The gameplay is not for everyone, sure, but I've yet to hear anything bad about the maps as a whole. The symmetrical design that most of them have is perfect for that style of play.

Anyway, bring on the update, and bring on the new maps. I've been looking for a reason to dig back in to it again.

your internet connection must suck, are you on wifi? that's usually the problem, if not you need to open up some ports

» Or...

Or you can just get a PS3, that always solves the issues.

» NAT

Have you checked your NAT type recently? I changed mine to open a few weeks ago... hasn't taken me longer than 60 seconds to get a match since then.

Makes it sound like TU3 comes with the maps, and the Snowblind pack has even MORE maps

» Maps

For those keeping track, that's 22 maps total after this pack comes out. Sure, you have to buy a lot of them, but if you're a hardcore fan of the series, you should never run out of maps to play on!

Forget Echo69, GET A PS3. YOU WONT REGRET IT!

» Ranks

For me, when this game out the only major flaw I could see was the ranking system. Sure the game had(and still has) it's fair share of glitches, but the lack of a decent ranking system was what really made it lack. I think more people would've stuck out all the glitches and such while waiting on the title updates to fix them, had they had a ranking system to keep them going.

As far as Epic being douchebags, if you head to gearsofwar.com, you'll find that the hardcore fans have been screaming for a replacement to the system that's currently in place. No, this isn't exactly a direct replacement, and yes it's coming very late, but at least Epic is giving their hardcore fan base what they want, and that speaks pretty loud to me.

» Gears

I have a PS3, and you're right, I don't regret it... but we're not talking about the PS3 right now... we're talking about Gears...

I'm starting to wonder if it's possible to talk about something ligitimately on this site without some douche turning it in to a console flame war. That drives away people that actually have constructive things to say, and leaves the site with almost nothing but fanboys... close to what it is now...

» @ PS3 fanboys

lmao, if I bought a PS3? how would I play Gears of War 2? these Fanboys get oudda hand sometimes.

and DJ, if you noticed in the first title update they did fix the problem of finding games, I think it may be your connection.

And its about time they brought in Fuel Depo, I was hoping Fuel Depo was included with the "flashback map pack" but it's all good. I love you Epicgames
