GDC 2011: Team Meat on less than meaty relationship with MS, more |

Deals were made, but promises were broken. From the day they launched the super title on the console, there already was discontent and tension. Studio founder Tommy Refenes expounded on the events that transpired that day, starting from their agreement with Microsoft that Super Meat Boy will be the only release for that week, and will be fetured as the top Xbox 360 dashboard item.
However, Microsoft apparently had other plans in mind, leaving Team Meat and their game feeling left out of the loop. First, Costume Quest (Double Fine) was suddenly given the same release week, and then the game's dashboar item was merely relegated to the fourth place, instead of the first -- and this was on top of it coming up late.
"We just kind of got pushed to the side, and that's basically how the Xbox Live launch went," recounted Refenes. "The only reason the game sold well was because of how we promoted it. The help from Microsoft was there in a very limited capacity."
He furthers, "It's not supposed to hurt your feelings because it's business, but it totally fucking hurt my feelings. Me and Ed just killed ourselves trying to get this game done and we're just pushed to the side."
That's all in the past now, and Team Meat is looking forward to a brighter future. Up next for them is the release of the game's Ultra Version. This one basically is a boxed edition set, that's targetting release in both US retail as well as Amazon. It's being pegged at US$ 20, but they're making sure every penny is going to be well-spent.
Apart from the game copy, the Ultra Version will be featuring bonus content such as a Super Meat Boy poster, the official soundtrack, and a comic book. It's expected to come out to retail on April.
