GDC 08: Xbox 360 suffers red ring of death at Microsoft's booth

If you thought the red ring of death problem on Microsoft Xbox 360 consoles have winded down, especially since reports said its failure rate dropped to 16% from what retailers claim to be over 30%, you may want to reconsider. Just recently, at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2008, one of Microsoft's units on display died to the beat of flashing red rings.

As you'll see in the video below, at Microsoft's XNA booth where aspiring developers can learn how to make games, one Xbox 360 malfunctioned and showcased the popular RROD. It does look like its vents are blocked off, so perhaps the heat eventually caused its death.

Are the trolls trying to start fanboy arguments as bad on the PS3 QJ as they are on the 360 one?...seriously anyone who regulars the PS3 one please tell me

» lulz

i think ballar is saying that the ps3 has a better build quality than the sexbox360, no one is trying to start an argument but its funny how microsoft didn't even save the good sexbox360's for gdc, really embarrassing and funny

» Heh

This reminds me of when microsoft was introducing Windows 98 at a conference with Bill Gates and experienced the blue screen of death. Now the 360 is having the red rings of death.

» Question?

Was this a newer model with the falcon Chips or an older model prone to Failure?

I mean you can't say its because of the vents being blocked, cause just look at it, all the 360 are blocked if it was that, than all of the consoles would have RRoD. So i don't think it was because of the vents.

Anyway thats sucks for them, this won't increase the sales for this year thats for sure, if models are breaking down already.

» @ LordQuas431 ---- Yes they do!

I have owned an PS3 for almost a year now. This is my first post on the xbox boards.

When I first bought my PS3 I thought that all of the xbox fanboys on the PS3 forums were fun to argue with. Fanboyism requires ignorance, arrogance, or both. Both are easy to pick apart with a logical, educated post.

When registering in order to be able to post/reply became a necessity most of the fanboys disappeared. There are always a few bad apples but the problem has definitely improved for the better.

I sure don't think those stupid display booths they put those in help with cooling. There's almost no room around the console for cooling airflow. I really think the best way for Microsoft to get rid of the bad RROD publicity is not only fixes like new chips and heatsinks but a whole new design for the 360, especaily with the increase in PS3 sales coming with the blu ray victory. They'll probably need to lower the price again too.

» To MCS

MCS, I don't think a 360 should require a room-by-itself for cooling. The PS3 units are just as much packed in as the 360s, you know, yet they don't have any such problems.

Truth is, the hardware design of the 360 sucks irretrievably, so the chip redesign may alleviate the problem somewhat, but will never go away or will achieve as low a failure rate as the PS3.

Let me put it this way: My XBOX 360 has a temperature gauge on both the CPU and GPU heatsinks directly. I use it in my entertainment center and have a fan exhausting the hot air out the back. With the door open and the fan on, the GPU reads a mere 45 degrees C and the CPU is even cooler. With the door closed and the fan off, the GPU exceeds 80 degrees C. This is with the 360 playing a game and on for over an hour.

Yes the poorly ventilated display booth is at least partially responsible.

I love my 360 to death, but this is just plain funny.

XD

by na2rul - 2008-02-20 04:47
» the ventilation is responsible only for the already 16-30% destined RRoD 360

otherwise, 9/10 360 wud hav RRoDed in booths

but i could be wrong. on a second thought, i do remember seeing RRod 360 in public booths which were actualy common. vents cud be the big factor afterall

by jrm125 - 2008-02-20 05:27
» The problem has always been

MCS,

I respect what you're saying. I agree those display cases are horrible for cooling (I've stood at BB and felt suffocated just looking at it). However, in your home set up, I don't think those sorts of measures should HAVE to be taken. The typical consumer isn't going to equip their home entertainment center with a cooling apparatus.

Really, MS needs to revamp the system (ditch the current case, etc) and do a total do-over ala PS2 Slim. I realize this would require a different snap on HDD, but it might solve some issues.

I love my 360 also, but this is funny as hell.

The average Joe won't know how mod his system like you do. But i do agree with jrm125 a 360 slim should be in order for it to be close to the PS3 and Wii Failure rate.

» Extra Venting?

Does anyone know if anybody has added extra vents to the Xbox 360's case to help out on the heat problem? I know it would probably void warranties but so does Modding..... I just thought I'd ask..

by mikekearn - 2008-02-24 23:57
» Ha.

Sucks for them. I keep praying this doesn't happen to me, though. I've had my 360 for almost 2 years and never have problems with it, and neither do any of my friends' Xboxes, but I figure it's only a matter of time before one of us gets hit.
