Borderlands - Image 1It has begun: an upcoming game will require a hard drive to play on the Xbox 360. It was announced at the Leipzig Games Convention today that 2K Games' new first-person shooter Borderlands has different requirements from other shooters and will need a hard drive because of its content generation system.

Borderlands is the new genre-crossing game from Gearbox described as "Indiana Jones meets Mad Max." The game will feature full-on four player co-op. The content generation system it features randomly creates objects and procedures in the game ranging from missions and landscapes to weapons and armor. The unique system for the genre is said to be one of the game's strongest points.

While there's no news yet on how much space the game will actually require, it's a safe bet that 360 Pro units (with its detachable hard drive) will be able to accommodate it. It was last heard from Microsoft that Hard Drive Required games would probably come from MMORPGs to store all the files needed to run so it's somewhat a surprise that the first game to formally announce the requirement would be a shooter.

It's not decidedly final yet, but it seems that the only thing left is for Microsoft to give the go signal for the requirements. Gearbox President Randy Pitchford comments that "I don't know if [Microsoft is] gonna complain about that, and I don't want to be in the middle of a controversy there, but you need space."

Borderlands will also be coming out on the PlayStation 3 and PC and is predicted to be released late next year.

» MS should jump on this chance, they should also do the same with Halo

Yes at last the first game that may finally rid us of the core owners who want the bigger games but wont upgrade their HD.

With the Elite now in full swing at the end of the week in Europe etc their is no room for gamers who want the Power user games but wont upgrade this is why MS has dropped it to the price of the Wii to reflect that soon they will only be able to play Wii type lower power cpu and graphic games unless they get a HardDrive.....

» Core owners and PS3 owners will have to upgrade or will be left behind

I agree with you, both the 20 gig PS3 owners and the Core owners will both have to eventually upgrade, its inevitable that the bigger systems Elite with 120gig and the PS3 with 80 gig that the devs will want to utilize this power in some form or another.

» ps3 20 gb

I think wont need upgrading for awhile. Blu ray disc capacity plus 20 gb hard drive should be fine for at least a couple of years.

Core with no hard drive... thats tough. Is there a way to put in hard drives for 360s not made by microsoft?

Its has nothing to do with the size of the media. By caching content on the hard drive the game can load objects much quicker.

» COre owners get cheap HD soon and Blu Ray will not mean a thing soon either

Well actually now the Elite has finally arrived 20 gig hard drives will be so cheap even the cheapest core owner will be able to buy one, and Blu Ray capacity will mean nothing soon because the hard drives are getting so big the only advantage of Blu ray over standard dvd9 is that there maybe 1 less disc when you install your latest game to the hard drive.

» yup

btw.... 2.5" SATA drives have reasonable prices online. How much is the MS HDD again?

» LMAO NOOB

Hard drives will never be a cost-effective way of distributing media, let alone games. Yes, they have faster read rates and size, but there are is a high chance that piracy will become an issue if games are distributed through an online service. It makes more sense for devs to keep doing what they're doing by putting games on discs.
