bill gatesWe've been told that Microsoft is not developing an Xbox handheld. But you know how it is in the gaming world, rumors of a portable device that might compete with the iPod or the portable gaming machines just won't die down. Naturally, it's one hot topic that was discussed at the Wall Street Journal's D: All Things Digital Conference in Carlsbad, California by no less than Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates.

Though Gates didn't make an announcement, he did say: We are looking at various ways to bring more to that space. There is a lot yet that hasn't been done. This implies that Microsoft may just be preparing to challenge Apple's iPod and Sony's PSP with one multipurpose device. If all the features of iPod and PSP could be put in one portable package, then Apple and Sony should have a reason to worry. Or should they?

I don't think Microsoft will head straight into making their own device anywhere in the future. More likely is that they will develop platfroms for handheld games to run on. Eg. a new windows OS (similar to CE) for palmtop gaming with support for 3D gaming and physics, DirectX 9/10 etc. Even the expansion of "Live Anywhere" to Palmtop devices + mobile phones.

WOW u gotta be shyttin me, i swear Xbox is like the biggest swagger jackers, they see anything that is making alot of money and they try to go out and get in there and top it, and since they have all this money cuz of Bill Gayes, i wouldnt be surprised if they DO come out wit a handheld....oh well, too bad its gonna flop tho

well hate to burst the bubble but the only original handheld maker would be tiger even though its a crappy lcd game it started the idea and nitnendo made it a standard. the psp is just as much of a market jumper as microsoft. the psp was only made simply because sony wanted a share of the profits that nindo was making, and they wanted to shove umd into ppl's faces as a comon format but it flopped. microst has experiece with handheld devices even though they arent gaming machines. microsoft does have some good rules of thumb that i like on a handheld, 1 they throw a hard drive on everything, keep to a low cost buy versatile disk format, and ofcourse better video graphics chips. so a x-handheld would be sweet to add some options.

sounds like a good deal, it would definately appeal to the japanese.

I suppose I'm honored by your impressive linguistic skills. At least you know to spell your name...Sort of. Anyways, I'm fascinated by the prospect of Microsoft finally entering the portable race, I think it would would be pretty awsome. Only because it would probably be more hackable and less UMDish. Don't get me wrong, I love PSP, but if they don't update the storage space of the UMD or update the batery, Sony's going to be in some trouble.

i very much doubt its a portable game machine. at e3 they said the closest thing to a handheld is the mobile phone thing with live anywhere that alone will take alot of work to run smoothly. in the future we will almost certainly see a portable console from ms. but at the moment they are to concerned with vista and 360 do another big project.

If it's better than that garbage ball PSP, I might buy it.

» Sweet!!!!!

If they made a handheld console with a built in hard drive it would wipe them both out! Hopefully they allow homebrew!

by CeCiL - 2006-05-31 22:47
» Umm no it won't...

It will appeal to the japs aswell as the 360... oh wait... there is no appeal...

'If all the features of iPod and PSP could be put in one portable package, then Apple and Sony should have a reason to worry. Or should they?'

The PSP does all of the above... what could the Xboy do that the PSP can't? oh wait... flop.

m$ will kick ass in the handheld market i have a psp which is ok but very very poo for some games first person shooters and platform only racing games are any good and ipod please what childish toy,

but a m$ handheld with 2 control sticks and movie playback plus i dars say the graphics would be the same as the xbox1 so it would be the best handheld around

» Hmm no need to worry. BTW the PSP can and does do everything the ipod can

Lets face it MS isnt very creative. The only thing I see coming out of this another monopoly strategy to lock you into more windows software and devices.

» PSP...

I have a PSP and the games are crap and they don't make 30gig sticks for the PSP yet. I just hope it has a right thumb stick and better text input maybe something like the sidekick!
