Game Informer confirms black and HDMI-enabled Xbox 360 |
Ó
This next one concerns the much-rumored black Xbox 360 and video game magazine Game Informer (GI). Before fans get crazy and haters become wild, let us inform you first that Matt Helgeson, Senior Editor for GI, said that this story is true and as a rule, they don't publish fake stories for the April issue of Game Informer.
With that out of the way, here's the real score: Microsoft is planning to release a new Xbox 360 before April ends. The new system will sport, among others, a 120GB hard drive, an HDMI output, and HDMI cables. The console will have an all-black color scheme, and its other accessories to be sold separately will use the same color scheme. The black Xbox 360 will cost US$ 479.
Quite interestingly, the console will not include HD-DVD playback. According to Game Informer's sources at Microsoft, high-definition movie playback is being withheld for the Xbox 360 because "the format has not been proven yet."
It would be remembered that back in February, Microsoft Corporate Vice President Shane Kim gave ambiguous statements on why their company is cutting shipment estimates for the current console.

well slap me upside the head and call me sally.
Well if it were true I will buy one, and MS are making the right choice on staying with DVD9 as the chosen format and keeping the HD-DVD as an add on(There is NO format war the DVD has not been affected and is winning hands down), the sales of external dedicated HD players are doing terribly POOR with Blu Ray Hardware selling the least.
this is SO typical for Mircrosoft lol. At first they say "full HD is not nextgen thats why the 360 cannot / does not need to do 1080p and that it is not important to gamers".... few months later, everything is revised.
But what amuses me the most:
Microsoft still does NOT include HD DVD because they KNOW its a FAILING format....
Digg ur Grave I say
cool for the people who don't yet have a 360, but for those who already have one and have invested so much time and effort returning and exchanging units from microsoft to get one that actually works, it kinda sucks. it almost seems microsoft is worried about a certian other system...
Outside of game console market Nobody cares about Blu Ray go look at the hardware sales, who wants to pay all that money for something that shows a slightly better pic and only IF you have an expensive TV?, when you can pay $150 and get a DVD recorder/Player/All day recording built in Hard Drive/HDMI etc.
built in WiFi? Or do they expect people to go ahead and still have to pay for that seperatly even though sony and ninteno give it to you with the system?
We still dont need 1080p, games run and look better a 720p. It's the sweet spot of gaming this generation.
tell me why do they care and add it now in a revised edition instead of sticking at the original plan and staying on 720p ???!?
"slightly better pic"... "expensive TV"
BR / HD DVD (or lets just say Full HD Movies) only having a "slightly better pic" than DVD ? Man you'r a joke. You seriously should visit your eye-doctor or something, as you need a new pair of glasses. I tell you what. The "slightly better pic" compared from DVD to a full HD Movie is the same as "slightly more colors" if you compare color TV with Monochrom TV.
I duno where you life, but here where I life in europe, HD ready screens are nowadays aviable for less than the cost of the 60GB PS3 and a full HD screen slightly more...
Leave your cave!
I knew it. Let's hope the 120gb HD Drive will be compatible with the "old" Xbox360 system. If yes I can't wait for the releaseday. Damn I love my 360 :)
It's because consumers asked for it.
Microsoft added 1080p functionality just to shut people up, and are now adding HDMI, again, to shut people up.....it's not because they "beleive it's the future", they are just doing it because of whiners....
The 120gig HDD will be nice, and you can bet that it will be released as a new option for a HDD....in which case a core would be nice at this point...
They just better not think they can start making us install games onto our HDD now, like some other platforms
Why has nobody brought this up? If they are doing all of this for the "whiners" as some idiot above suggested, then why not add this on?
What the hell this is bull*****, I don't want to go buy a black 120gig harddrive for my *****ing white system.
the article never mentioned anything about a 120gb hdd for the old 360. If they do come out with one, don't you think it'll be in both colors???
this looks cool i want one of these!!!!! 120GB thats good!!!!
I'm ever so slightly pissed off, as I only got a 360 this Christmas, but if they offer a trade in and save system for original 360's and they include a way to transfer all my saves to the new HDD, I'm fine.
Maby you like this picture:
http://img102.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1469gr2.jpg
;)
Sure there is a way to get your saves to the new HD drive. Just download it from Xbox Live :)
One more reason to buy the 360 ...
Proberly because Wireless online is unreliable and for around $3 you can have a perfectly flat 50ft cat 6 cable that never drops connection and can be hidden anywhere..
Transfer across the drives will be easy, and remember in Europe and Australia you dont even have a choice with the PS3 its the 60gb or nothing so the 20gb PS3 owners will proberly be asking the same question soon.
so what that picture is just some guy who has painted his 360 black.
For starters look on the controller, the start and back buttons are white. I'm sure ms wouldnt leave them white coz it just looks crap.
Also look at his hdd it is the same colour as a 20gb hdd so it probably is a 20gb hard drive. ms wouldnt make us pay for something that is all black...except for the hdd it would also be black.
Finally if u look at the case on the 360 it has a glossy/glittery look to it just as if someone has painted it.
anyways thats my 2 cents...
Black looks really cool, but its going to look weird with my white controllers and white memory card. The change in color looks cool, but was unnecessary.
New Black Xbox 360: 479$
+ HD-DVD add-on: 199$
+ Wireless network card add-on: 30$(?)
+ 1 year Xbox live 120$(Norwegian price)
= 828$
... ***** it, I'd rather just by a PS3. You get the same ***** for 599$.(And unlimited internet services.)
ill definently be getting this
Shut your holes, Jimmys!
The 20gb PS3 (9) is only more exspensive that this new xbox 360 elite. Yes is has a smaller hard drive but remember it has a Blueray drive! Im not a PS3 fan but it sure would make me think twice. I personally wish they would bring out a Xbox with wifi, hd player, big drive, hdmi and all the top noch goodies and then sell it for the same price as the PS3.Because face it a console without Gears of war and halo will just never compete with a console without. I just prefer the xbox (menus, live, games ext) and I think that there are lots of people that would rather buy a xbox than a PS3 with the same spec. Just my thoughts!
Hey it all preference man. Would you rather get something for free or pay for something that is better? Think about that when your comparing the 2.
And I would rather this be in white (maybe give us a choice). I guess i'll have to live with it... having 2 consoles lmao. HDMI and 120GB all the way!
dude your wrong
xbox 479
hd-dvd 199
wireless card 99!!!
xbl 59
836(i think)
Since when are Sony shipping a PS3 with a 120GB HDD for $599? Last time I checked, it was still 60GBs. And why are you adding a Norwegian price to US prices, other than to distort the facts?
I guess thinking is not one of your strong points.
Maybe I added Norwegian price to show it from my pespective, because I'm from Norway? Stupid american. There are other countries out there. Why should I show the US price when first of all; I don't know it, and second; It wouldn't be the price I'd be paying.
Of course I know the new 360 got more storage, but as you also see; the price was alot higher compared to the PS3. Guess you are the one who lack the intelligence after all.
It's not like I'm a PS3 fanboy either, don't own one but got a 360. But still that doesn't hide the truth that 360 makes you think it's cheap, but packs all these add-ons on you, so in the end it's damn expensive.
LOL at all the 360 ppl gettin excited for a proprietary hard drive when I can go buy a 500GB 2.5' HDD and just stick it in my PS3.
Have fun paying HUNDREDS of dollars for your bigger 2.5" HDD, son. Oh, and be sure to add that cost to the $500-$600 that you've already dropped on your over-hyped, over-priced Playstation 3.
P.S. Microsoft FTW!
thats almost $500 enough to get a ps3. Theres not even a HD-DVD drive. Paying that much for a 360 is a rip off.
Don't bash me i am a proud 360 owner and a huge fan of the system. But this is stupid. They should make this $400. But then that would piss me off cus i already bought mine.
Where do you buy a perfectly good 50 ft CAT 6 cable for $3? I don't even think you could buy a CAT 3 cable 50 ft long for that price...
WHERE THE HELL DO YOU FIND A 500GB 2.5 drive? Please tell me!
Let's do the math, son.
Assuming that someone just HAD to have the high definition movie player (which in my opinion is currently a waste of money, be it Blu-Ray, or HD-DVD), the 360 would cost them $679.00. And, let's not forget that the HDD in this new system is TWICE as big as the PS3's, and wait, what's that? It actually comes with the HDMI cable, unlike the PS3? Interesting.
So, for a $79 dollar increase in price over the "premium" PS3, one can get a 360 with even more goodies than Sony's current failure of a system.
Proud owner or not, you need to open your eyes.
I foresee two immediate events:
-The 'Core' X360 with no HDD is going to stop being made when the black XBox360 is released. Even BestBuy lists the Core 360 as discontinued.
-And when the black XBox360 is released both the 20GB version of the XBox and the 120GB version of the XBox are almost certainly going to be made with the cooler, quieter, cheaper 65nm process.
Based on these two theories MS should reprice the XBox360s to make them cheaper. The 20GB should fall to $300 and the 120GB one should debut at $400.
(but black still sucks)
"Maybe I added Norwegian price to show it from my pespective, because I'm from Norway? Stupid american."
The other prices were NOT from your perspective, they're the US prices, so it's a distortion of the facts.
And stupid Norwegian for assuming everyone on this site MUST be from America. There are people from other countries that post here too, including me. Perhaps you need to get out more. Maybe you'll see that hot yellow thing in the sky we call the Sun.
"There are other countries out there."
Say that to yourself.
"Why should I show the US price when first of all; I don't know it, and second; It wouldn't be the price I'd be paying."
Then do some research FIRST! Mixing the prices from different countries is STUPID. You could have easily provide ALL the prices from Norway for both the 360 and PS3 and made your point THAT way.
"Of course I know the new 360 got more storage, but as you also see; the price was alot higher compared to the PS3. Guess you are the one who lack the intelligence after all."
Did you even think before you wrote that. Obviously not. The point is, you should take into account the price difference between a 120GB 2.5" HDD and a 60GB 2.5" HDD. It doesn't have to be perfect, so long as you show enough intelligence to take it into account when presenting your figures (again, ALL from ONE country, not TWO).
"It's not like I'm a PS3 fanboy either.."
Really...but you'd "rather just by a PS3". R-i-g-h-t.
"But still that doesn't hide the truth that 360 makes you think it's cheap, but packs all these add-ons on you, so in the end it's damn expensive."
The 360 doesn't make you think anything of the sort. It's a games console. The HD-DVD drive is for movies only, hence it's only for those who want to play HD-DVD movies. Those who just want to use their 360 for games do not need to buy it! So yes it will be more expensive than having it bundled with the console compared to the PS3, where Blu-ray is used for both games and movies.
*Slaps you!*
SALLY!
can anyone confirms the black 360 is equipped with a 65nm processor?
also about the release date, is it a world-wide launch date, or just the US?
what about the people that has the first flawed 360 am it no. 3 and now they come out with one with hdmi and a 120gb hdd that only make me love my wii and ps3 even more
This is just a reply to some of the posts towards the top. I have a PS3 and a 360 with a 42 inch lcd HD tv that does 1080p. I just bought this tv and before this i had a regular 32 flat screen that i thought was the *****. go and get a HD tv and play your games in full HD and you will see why people are crying a throwing a fit about HD for their games and movies. I dont even like watching DVDs anymore. BlueRay is the ***** hands down. It sounds corny but you have to see it to believe it.
No really, you think a PS3 will not be released soon with a larger HDD and perhaps a few other changes (perhaps a hardware scaler like the 360)?
That's why BOTH made their HDDs upgradable.
So for current 360 gamers, they can buy the 120GB HDD for the 360 when it's available and upgrade their 360s that way. As for HDMI, it's great to have, but if it was a big issue then you would not have purchased a 360 to begin with.
stupid ms fanboys... oh look, your dreams come true. A useless upgrade for you, since there is still a core system so games can't expect a hard drive. and you get HDMI, which you all said you don't need..
Oh and you all get to spend another $500 on a console, probably less than a year later!!! SWEET! good *****ing work asschaff.
If it doesn't have HD-DVD playback there is going to be the slightest improvement to quality. I vs P has been a long issue, and personally there is nada difference. I is better for Slow games, with P being better for a high frame rate | second and higher (60+) HZ.
:]
You can buy The 50ft Super Flat cat 6 from EBUYER, I got mine from Ebuyer UK, I have TWO 50ft Cat 6 cables and they work out at ÂŁ1.99p each.
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/106457
No one cares about HD-TV playback, look at how bad dedicated players are selling or NOT SELLING as is the case, DVD9 has seen off any threat that didnt really even emerge and No one will pay those prices for a machine that can do NOTHING but play Movies when they can do it that and also a 100 things more with a system that costs 1 tenth of the price of those players.
only if isnt loud.I just hate my 360 because of that!
a black colour,i have seen this somewhere
i doesnt matter whats the HDD space is,the PS3 HDD is upgradable with any 3rd party manufacturer HDD,you can get 250GB,120GB for prices much cheaper than MS propietery HDD
seems MS finaly decided to include HDMI port, which proofs that the info that the current 360 versions cant display digital out-put signals was true
i think this step is neccesary,as the current 360 cant compete against the ps3,though i belive the black one wothout next gen player [blu-ray/hddvd],wifi it still an incomplete system
consoles are becoming integrated parts of homes, they are the easy plug&play media centers for households, they must have full-functionality you cant say that consoles are for games only anymore, lacking built-in next-gen player is a mistake
i just wonder how does the 11million people who bought the current versions feel,i highly dout they dont care that a better version is coming human self doesnt go this way
i am glad this is coming out, it shows that microsoft is giving gamers what it wants. i like the white better but honestly i change my faceplate all the time so you can never see the color of my 360. i already get 1080p thru vga on my tv so hdmi port is not needed for me but many tv's will only do 1080p thru hdmi so this is a good upgrade for those that need that feature but i am really looking forward to the larger harddrive..
Its gettin to be the future so its all just gonna be another thing!Europe just makes everything cheaper cause half of ya cant afford anything anyways! Who gives a flying F***!!!!!Just a system
U uh really let him have it!
The math is perfect!Sony hasnt made the right decisions here lately
Yer you seen black before it was on the old Sega Megadrive and the Amiga cd 32 console years before the PS....
the picture on blu ray is so much better than regular dvd, this is coming from an xbox fanboy. There is not a big difference on a standard def tv. But, you can't even buy those anymore can you? Blu-ray vs Hd-dvd? Who has more studios thats your winner.
Aren't you forgetting about the price of a wireless adapter?
I'd be pretty pissed if I'd put all that money down on a 360 system, only to find out that they keep on releasing newly improved, less faulty, quieter, sexier, spacier, more updated versions with no regard to the devoted consumer that has already made an investment in their product.
Luckily I'm still waiting to see how this console war pans out, but I don't think M$ is as far ahead of the game as everyone here seems to think...
Only time will tell.
so thats how u get hd from 360 - VGA? I'm UK Plstation fan but always looking up2 xbox and always think wot cud ve bn done to make it more dominant.
The wireless adapter? I think I'll stick with my $20 dollar 50' ethernet cable (that can be easily concealed with little effort, mind you) that guarantees a faster, more reliable connection.
dude! you DONT need to buy the wireless card NOR the HD-DVD! its not a MUST have...
I'd like to see you trying to do that haha.
anyways..
you dont really need all of those gb's on the xbox anyways so if u get it or not, it doesnt matter, it just a nice extra (for those who need it AND can afford it)
***** XBOX 360 *****ES
"U uh really let him have it!"
Yeah I know, but he deserved it. :)
My 360 can do 1080p through component for all my games. Since this is a gaming system that should be all that really matters. BTW HDMI will not make this look any better.
It can upgrade movies to 1080p or play HD movies in 1080p through VGA. Again HDMI will not make this look any better. Although it would free up my VGA slot on my TV for my PC :).
The bigger Hard drive would be nice but it is not a needed feature. HDMI would also be nice; but why again do I need it? I already get 1080p.
I would really like it if mine where black so it matched the rest of my entertainment system but oh well at least it isn't purple, lol.
You can buy any usb wireless adapter and it will work on your 360, I just got one for $25, ; but a direct modem connection with a CAT-6 cable works the best.
X-box live. Yep I have to pay $60 dollors for it a year >
