Full 3D models possible with two Kinects

Ó

Microsoft designed Kinect for a number of different purposes - gaming and all-around Xbox user interface, for example. Gadget extraordinaires and tech aficionados, however, have found other uses for the motion camera, as you may have seen from many vids all over the net. One of the first to post such vids, Oliver Kreylos, has a new one to show. If one Kinect can show you part of your surroundings, imagine what two could do.

Yep, you get a full 3D model, as Kreylos shows in his latest vid.

I don't really see any possibility for homebrew... I mean if you already have the object in front of you what is the point of a low rez virtual model. Maybe using miniatures or something you would be able to scale something up, but what else?

waste of money, you can do it with standard cameras, the infrared vision work for the volume of the object in the perspective of the camera but you dont need them cause the trick is with the chess-like image in the background, and actually with more better and cheapper cameras it can be done better

And the usual anti-kinect spouting that opens the comments dancefloor after *anything* written about Kinect...

this has little to do with kinetic for microsoft 360 console, this thing wont apply for a 360 game, this is using the cameras of kinetic hardware(2 of them) in a PC homebrew experiment, and its pointles since can be dome much better wasting less money in hardware

is like if I say that the eyetoy from PS2 is very cool because I can take 3 eyetoy cameras in 3 axis of an object with a reference image in background of all perspective and I get a 3d object with a pictures of the object as textures, it simply has nothing to do with eyetoy used in a PS2, and I can use better cameras and get better results for less money or even better you can use a common laser pointer and track it for an acurate 3d object scan

in my opinion using a couple kinetic cameras to do that is just a waste of money, there are much better homebrew projects that are cheaper with more common hardware, but of course you need to use kinetic to appear in the frontpage of a videogame page and get the interests of fanboys no matter if the result is worst and costs more money to do :-*

rather than generating 3D models (not that it's a bad thing), I think the Kinect would be useful as a more accesible alternative for amateur animators who need to do some motion capture. As far as I know mocap suits and other similar mainstream techniques are really expensive.

im sure the devs will be limited in doing too much due to the need of a 3rd usb port,
but i was wondering about the voice-sound
does it echo with both kinnects on, or can you turn sound off?
im not familiar with kinnect because i wanted to wait until i know all the bugs are out ..(yall remember when ps3 first came out dont you?)
i was one of the people who had it same day., i remember the bugs vividly
