“I wanted a game where you tune up the car, I ended up pitching the first game that turned out to become this big franchise, and I didn’t get to deliver the game I wanted completely in way,”
says Dan Greenawalt director of Forza Motorsport 2. In an interview with Xbox Evolved, Greenwalt spilled inside info on the racing game that is poised to challenge Gran Turismo to the finish line.

Not much is known about Forza Motorsport 2. It didn't flash its tail pipe at the last E3 because Greenwalt's crew preferred to work on it, and have the game available on time, rather than hype it. We do know Greenwalt promised Forza Motorsport 2 will not be a crappy upgrade of the franchise. Gamers can can do all kinds of stuff with all the parts, turbo charges, clutches and so on. Also, he says expect over 300 cars in high-def, sixty frames per second burning rubber on more tracks. Greenwalt is confident Forza Motorsport 2 will look at the very least as good as Project Gotham Racing 3.

As for car damage and realism the crew has been working on that, too, for all you hard to please racing-sim fans. "We are making a realistic title so we canÂ’t have unrealistic results if you hit the side of a guard rail at 150mph... though we have a certain amount of respect (to the manufacturers of cars featured in the game) and keep the car damage tactful. After all we want people of all ages to enjoy the game and we canÂ’t have guys crashing through the windshields on fire or anything."

Any parting words? "IÂ’m a long time Gran Turismo fan, way long ago before I was a designer. I donÂ’t know itÂ’s just GT4, and I played it you know, and GTHD I dunnoÂ…I donÂ’t want to sound like a Microsoft tool or whatever, but if we did the same thing with Forza, then this game could have been out in a few months and not just a year." Sounds more like figthing words! Check out the mini-trailer and see if Greenwalt's money is where his gas tank is...

yea

but, the real question is not if it will be better than the gt4, but if it will be better than the next gran turismo game. That's it's real competition.

GT Series

So far there hasnt been a came that compares to the GT series. The GT series is probably the most high profile game that exist. It gets so much work put into it that the series always blows me away and GT4 was no exception. Now considering that theres a limit to how much you can simulate in a Racing game. But the clutch? Get real. You can not simulate the clutch without designing a special wheel that has a clutch pedal that can be dynamically changed to match the car that your driving. If they make the clutch extra button that you have to press before you shift gears then it will fail miserably. If they want to compete with GT, then they have to out do GT. They need camera crews running around to every single world course and taking pictures to recreate the tracks with every detail. If you drive slowly on any GT4 cource, they even went as far as to place all the little marks and defects on the road surface. And when you drive a City course, make it feel like your in that city. I drove the Seattle cource since I live in Seattle and it was amazing how much it really looked like Seattle. I played the first Forza game and i enjoyed it for what its worth. Damage in a racing game is uneeded. Sure its a nice thing to have but in the end, when your practicing, and you hit a wall, you dont want your cars performance to be hindered through the rest of the track.

gt4 is really impressive

gt4 is really impressive on the ps2 i mean it had 1080i support the graphics were almost on par with a next gen racing game AND BEST OF ALL IT WAS "LAST GEN" LETS SEE THE NEXT GT (NOT A UPGRADED VERSION OF GT4 WE SAW AT E306) of course it has to be better than the last gen game but will it be better than gt5?

gt4

agree, him comparing the game to gt4, which is on a different generation of console, is a little low and it would be like me comparing gt4 to gt1 on ps1, there wouldn't b a comparison. i can't stand car games to be honest, but gt4's graphics on a ps2 really did make me go "wow". lets wait and see til gt5 comes out, at least then a fair comparison can be made.

Teh.

I like how in the title it says better than GT4 yet he never mentions anything about forza2 being better. He said he like GT series. Its going to be hard to beat an already perfect game. GT4 blew me away and it may have not gotten the reviews the dev wanted but that was because it didnt have online only LAN. Which ok online would have been cool but o well the game takes forever to beat. There is alot of replayable things to do. I like what #3 said about will it be better than GT5? It will be hard to GT5 even though there is only a clip of it and thats all we know. I never liked the first forza but i give this one a try. I think the only reason i didnt like it was because it didnt play like GT4.

True True

I'm a fan of Gran Turismo and I know their graphical detail is insane. It will be interesting to see if they can actually compare Forza 2 to GT4, but with GT5 on the horizon, and from what I saw in the E3 demo of Gran Turismo HD I can honestly say that Forza won't stand a chance against Gran Turismo 5.

@ Warrior

"from what I saw in the E3 demo of Gran Turismo HD I can honestly say that Forza won't stand a chance against Gran Turismo 5" You can actually say that, in light of the fact that we haven't seen a single in-game shot of either games? Thats very impressive. Stop being a GT fanboy & judge each game on the final copies, rather than rhetoric.

your dumb

we have seen gt4 in HD and it looks like xbox 360 graphics almost so there fore we can presume that gt5 will looks at least 2 times that good, therefore owning forza 2. Oh and everyone knows gt games ARE the most realistic driving games ever!!

forza all the way

forza to me was far better than gt4 I got so far into that game it was insane .gt4 felt well like all the other gt's before it nothing new .and i did not think it looked as hot as they told me I would think it was :P..and forza online was sooo good i loved it . will forza beat it I do not know because I do not know what winning is in an opinion.

think about it this way...

if a last gen game up rezed SLIGHTLY (gt-hd show at e306) looks like that just wait until the fully new developed next game comes out i mean if u look at gt4 on the ps2 and put project gotham next to it they look really comparble and this is only on the ps2!

GT4 and Tourist Trophy are amazing.

Polyphony Digital just needs to stay on their footwork and keep the franchise fresh. If they can do that than I don't see any competition. They kept Forza, Sega GT, Euthaisa or Enthusia (Or whatever that crap was), and Juiced in second or less.

who cares about gta 4 I want it to be better than pgr3

my pgr 3 online experience was cut short due to the fact that there wasnt a single clean racing human being any where on line, everyone wanted to fishtale or run you off the road; which cut the replay value of the game in half for me, so im hoping that this Forza 2 will have a way to Race and have fun while shoving a foot up the ass and deep into the stmoach of the pricks who race dirty.

GT4 old school

Gran Turismo 4 was not very good. I forget the statistics.. but the physics engine in Forza one was massively more complex of that in gt. By the way.. the 1080i graphics looked terrible for GT4... My friend brought a ps2 over and hooked it up to my hdtv.. and I think in alot of ways the 1080i support was worse than normal tv. it allowed you to see that true lack of geometric detail. On that regard.. google the popular science magazine that compared how real forza was to gran turismo. The physics in forza are one of the most realistic driving sims ever made... makes gran turismo truly pale in comparison. And you can tell when you drive. GT is nowhere as realistic. Forza is hands down the better simulator. GT does have alot of cars... whoopee
