When Kinect was first introduced, it wow'ed everyone with what it can do for gaming. Now, it continues to impress, just not in the way that Microsoft intended it to. The hands-free motion sensor hit right at home with homebrew devs, who continue to post videos of their amazing work with the camera's eyes. This one has to be one of the coolest.
This Pelican quadrotor basically uses Kinect to see. Visual data obtained by the device is sent to a Linux box onboard, and this data is used by the machine to fly autonomously, determine altitude, and avoid obstacles. It was developed by the STARMAC Project in UC Berkeley's Hybrid Systems Lab.
