Faulty Xbox360 Hardware: Should You Pay The Fix-it Bill? |
Ó
"I have had my Xbox360 since launch. After 3 months I needed to have the system replaced and the system was replaced by Microsoft. Now the system is plagued by 3 rings of light. I call customer support and after being hung up I make sure to fire up the phone recorder," goes the heart-wrenching post on Magamanlive.com That's the good part because it nosedives from there! According to the unfortunate FanBoy, after an MS CSR supervisor guided him through a diagnostic test, he was told the problem was “somthing specific with the hardware inside the console.” And if he ever wants to use his console again he needs to ship his Xbox 360 and pay a $100 fee.
Well, if MS replaced the system why can't they do it again? And for free? Because the Xbox 360 was no longer covered by the limited 3-month warranty that specifically states, "Defects discovered after the Warranty Period, there is no warranty or condition of any kind."
Disgruntled FanBoy thinks Microsoft should be held responsible for faulty hardware instead of charging gamers - whose only "fault" is picking a bum unit - for fixing defective hardware. "I will not pay for somthing i did not break and everyone else should join this fight."
Or you can do what Robert Byers did. He filed a class action suit against Microsoft Corp. for selling defective Xbox 360 consoles back in December 2005. Byers claim MS rushed the launch of the Xbox 360 to beat Sony and Nintendo so fast it ended up with a design flaw that causes the console to overheat and freeze up. And in fact, following the November 22 launch of the Xbox 360 last year, reports that some of the new machines were defective started to surface.
Commenting on the case MS said they had received a few isolated reports of consoles not working as expected (they didn't say the "D" word) but it was expected considering the magnitude of the launch. Furthermore, the claim defective consoles represented a “very, very small fraction” of total units sold.
In that case, MS shouldn't have any problem replacing the “very, very small fraction” of defective units sold, right?

i almost know how this guy feels. i had to ring ms this morning, to complain that the xbox 360 they fixed only 4-5weeks ago, is faulty again, with them stupid red lights. now most consoles that have been out, i bought on release day (megadrive, snes, ps1, n64, dreamcast, ps2, gamecube, xbox psp, ds) and have all lasted at least 12months before any kind of fault occurs. now ok, if it happens once during the first 12months, fair enough, thats just bad luck, but twice!! and i haven't even had the console 12months!! i've read in alot of forums that people have cases worse than mine, where it has been sent back several times or even replaced. i really like my 360, its a good piece of kit, but i just can't help thinking they really did rush the launch of the console just to beat competitors to the market, and now it seems i have to suffer endless phone calls and replacements because of this :-(
how old is this? My console is from launch and still working fine.
My UK launch 360 is working perfectly. And i play it nearly every day.
This is no issue in Sweden. Swedish law protects the consumers from these kind of errors. Companies are not able to deal themselves out of the Swedish law (even if they sometimes tries). Even if the warranty stated by Microsoft was due, Microsoft will still be forced to serve our machines here in Sweden. That's consumer protection for you :)
Well, MS fixed my orginal XBox for free two years after I bought the thing when it started going DDE crazy. So they have fixed them before
LISTEN, i HAD THIS HAPPEN TO ME WITH XBOX 1. THERE IS AN EASY SOLUTION. GO TO WALMART, BUY ANOTHER XBOX 360. TAKE IT HOME, GET THE HAIRDRYER, CAREFULLY REMOVE THE PACKAGING STICKER. TAKE OUT YOUR NEW XBOX, REPLACE IT WITH DEFECTIVE XBOX. CAREFULLY SEAL UP YOUR BOX SO IT LOOKS NEW Now, go to walmart return counter and say this " Yes, I would like to get a refund on this Xbox 360, because I bought it for my little brothers birthday, and I didnt know my mom had bought one just hours previously. Now we have two Xbox's and one birthday boy" Hand them the receipt and the "unopened" Xbox. Then say "***** you microsoft, you faceless megacorporation peice of *****, I love your game system"
ok im not an xbox360 fan more of a ps3 fan btu i have nothing against xbox360. I don't have an xbox360 but all of my friends who do have a 360 have had numerous occatiosn where their console is faulty. Sure microsoft may have replaced their console for them free of charge, but the point is that if this many people's 360's have broke then microsoft should recall them all and start re-manufactoring after the problem has been rectified. My firned has had 3 new xbox360's in 4 months now and my other firned is refusing to send his back again because it took him 3 months to get hold of one. Microsoft have to take into consideration the time they take to repair a console, as the gamer has saved for a console that should work the day it is purchased. So I ask of microsoft not to charge anyone for the cost of the xbox360 to be repair and just get it fixed free of charge.
Mine works fine and i got mine at launch. Anyways, MS says there was very very small fraction of people with defective systems. Yet everytime i go into a forum there are always people complaning about there systems. I do believe MS did rush there console. They barely had any systems at launch i was only luck since i preordered mine before E3. Then still 6 months after launch it was still hard to get a 360 and they would be sold out at every gaming store. I do believe that MS should be held responsible for there mistakes. Its not this kids fault that MS made some *****ty console with bugs and faulty hardware. I think all the people with the three rings of death should get together and file a class action suit against MS. Just to show how *****ing retarded they are. Also its not like MS doesnt have the man power to do it and its not like they dont have billions and billions of dollars.
I'm a Sony fan but Microsoft needs to do better. I think they rushed the 360 just to beat the PS2 when it comes to hardware. Now the PS3 comes and is more powerful than it again. Microsoft deserves this lawsuit. They are F****** stupid and don't have the experience to correct these problems like longtime companies like Sony and Nintendo.
Ive had my 360 since launch and everything is working fine, if people just took care of their systems and didn't leave them running 24/7 then MAYBE we wouldn't have this problem!!! Why else would it overheat??? I work in the gaming industry and all my co-workers have a 360 and none of them had to have theirs sent back. I think people want to see the 360 FAIL, so that's why they don't really CARE about how they are treating their system.
it's cases like this that make me glad i paid $79 AUD for 4 years of extended warranty from harvey norman. i was told that if i had any problem with the console, they would have it fixed. if it could not be fixed, they would replace the console and the entire contents of the package for a brand new one. the best part is, the guy told me that if the xbox 360 went down in price during this time, i would be able to claim the difference in games and/or accessories :)
I bought my 360 March 12, and it seems to run fine.....for a while. After an hour and a half i get disk read errors....grrr, and since my MS wants me to pay for rapirs i said f that I'll just wait untill it craps out completly i guess....
did that actually work #6? anyway....my console freezes loads when i try messagin or using my guide button which sucks a bit.... oh yeh....CHONG CHING PING PONG DING DING FRIED RICE EGG ROLL...
"10. » i love my 360! I think people want to see the 360 FAIL, so that's why they don't really CARE about how they are treating their system" for your information, i dont leave my xbox 360 on 24/7, as im not home 24/7. i too work inside the games industry (assistant manager of gamestation in st helens) and have seen quite a few people bring back 360's, some not working straight out of the box. as for the comment about people not CARING for their 360, shut up! i didnt pay £280 and listen to all these stories about overheating and failure, then think oh sod it, ill just let my £280 investment blow up. if you did any research into why they did overheat, you'd find out that there was a problem in the manufacturing process that "may" cause overheating in 360's. Considering you work in the gaming industry, you dont really know your stuff
I had my 360 for 17 days before I got the three lights of death. With the extra replacement plan I purchased from Best Buy it was a simple exchange. Leaving the machine on for extended periods of time should not cause a hardware failure. PC's, DVD players, previous generation consoles and set-top boxes can be left on for indefinate periods of time without having to be turned off. Why should this one be any different?
well said goostoff, i forgot to mention something like that in my last post, so logged onto the net to make tht point, but you've done it for me. I leave my pc on downloading media 24/7, and it has always been on for past few months and never have any problems. i play on my 360, at most 2hours a day, and after three months it packed in. then, onced fixed, it lasted only 4-5weeks before same problem kicked in. so, like goostoff pointed out, why should the 360 be different to every other appliance out there?
"previous generation consoles" Yea.. The ps2 had some issues Goostoff. Actually involved law suits
"don't have the experience to correct these problems like longtime companies like Sony and Nintendo." Sony had faulty ps1s and ps2s. They even went to court over the poorle made ***** machines called "ps2"
about your egg roll comment, I would like to say ***** YOU!!!! figure out the censored word. by the way i would really like admin to remove all stupid mother*****ing racist comment, i mean racism is a bigger problem that cursing, unless you admin are racist too. hmm?
I purchased an xbox360 in the ending of january and within 5 months I started seeing the 3 red lights of death, good thing i bought a store warranty when got the 360, but I also had to get a new warranty which cost me 50 dollars. Its a shame that ms would rush the release of their console just to get a head start at our expense. Im starting to regret ever buying one
"17. » hmmm "previous generation consoles" Yea.. The ps2 had some issues Goostoff. Actually involved law suits" "Sony had faulty ps1s and ps2s. They even went to court over the poorle made ***** machines called "ps2" may have been poorly made...didnt stop sony shifting millions of them though. again, ive worked in game retail since the days of megadrive, so ive seen most of the huge console launches, and the 360 was very poorly done, not to mention in the stores ive worked in, had a high rate of people attempting to return it, probably second to the psp, which had several problems with dead pixels. see, i hate all this fanboyism! "poorly made ***** machines called ps2" that just proves you hate sony, therefore any comment you have about sony is always going to be negative, and comments about 360 is always positive. IMO they 360 is a good console, id say more of a xbox 1.5 than a true sequel to the original xbox, but still a very good console, they just released it far too early to get one over on sony and nintendo, instead of spending time testing the consoles thoroughly for things like overheating etc and rectifying as many of these and other faults as they could. t least the 360 would have had a better launch and better launch line up
I've had my 360 for a few weeks now and the day I bought it crashed 2 times while installing Final Fantasy XI... I had my system preowned but my brother works in GAME and said the system was recently bought by a kid that traded his PSP in then returned that 360 back for the PSP, he said he got bored of it? HOW??? Oh by the way, Brilliant System Microsoft.
Whenever a new system comes out, I never buy one of the fist batch for myself. If I find one early I'll sell it on ebay and wait for the second generation to come out. My second generation XBOX 360 works great and has never had any errors.
I know of some holes in their security for a couple of their main servers. I would so deface their entire site with child porn and get them in some trouble lol. Or I might just change the Microsoft site to redirect to Sony. lol that would be great hahaha.
That's what you get for buying a piece of worthless american *****!
#25 where are you from?
I got my 360 on launch and it worked fine until the 4th of july. I turned it on and those red lights would come and nothin would happen. One dud on here said that if we just take care of our 360 nuthin would happen. I took care of my 360 like it was a baby. I had proper ventilation and everything. I play basketball for New Mexico and being on the road all the time, i really dont have time to play that much, so it couldnt have messed up cuz i played it 4 a long period of time. MS just jipped me and now i have to pay 129 for them to ship me a box so i can put my 360 in it and thay could replace it with new one.
What idiot buys a three month warranty for a $400 piece of hardware? Serves this guy right. I've had mine since launch and it's froze probably three times total, five times max, most in Oblivion. But I bought the extended warranty, so I'm not concerned.
3 month warranty, lol! Here in the UK, we enjoy the protection of a 1 year warranty on everything we buy by law! Im laughing now, but my first ps2 died 1 year and 1 month after purchase :(
Well this seems to me a case that microsoft needs to consider. Intel processors generate ALOT of heat. Since they have 3 dual core processors thats alot of heat to displace. As far as i have seen the heatsink in the xbox360 is about the same size as a heatsink designed to cool one Intel P4 dualcore processor. It also has to cool the GPU. So expect alot of overheating issues. The ps2 had problems, but never overheating. It was the DRE errors that kept on comming up. yes it was sonys fault but the Xbox was no exception from the DRE error. My First Generation PS2 lasted me 2 years before i got DRE while my 5th gen Xbox lasted me 5 months before it gave me DRE. XBox360 is a poor designed system. I personally know people who specialize in working with metals and I paid them 400 bucks to build a heatsink with heatpipes that cols everything so I could remove the loud fans from the system. If I can hear it from sitting 15 feet away on my couch, then its too loud. Mine will definitly never overheat as my temp. probe never gets past 35C, so screw the Xbox360 extnded warrenty, no one should have to pay extra for warrenty on a product thats 300-400 bucks. Thats like buying a car with a 3 year 30,000 mile warrenty.
" that just proves you hate sony, therefore any comment you have about sony is always going to be negative, and comments about 360 is always positive. " You must be a blind fanboy if you don't recall the ***** sony pulled with the ps2.
nocomment
I just hate sony. No fanboyism for Microsoft. Or Nintendo. I enjoy games. And hate when people lie to me. Like sony.
And uh.. Microsoft isn't lying by saying "only a small fraction" of xbox360s have this problem and making people pay for services when they should just do a recall and remanufacture their consoles. I bet this would even save them money in the long run by having less laborers to fix the ever flowing returns of xbox's and prevent a possible class actions uit. Man Fanboys need to grow up.
"Well this seems to me a case that microsoft needs to consider. Intel processors generate ALOT of heat. Since they have 3 dual core processors thats alot of heat to displace." The Xbox360 has a IBM processor so do some research before shouting out things.
around 4-5 million units sold. and the only people i hear complaining are on websites. not everybody body post on websites. and there is something wrong when a person cant even keep a console running even after their 3-4 one. it appears evident that it is the person playing. millions of people have had their 360's running for several months with no problems. so when a person says "im on my 4th one" then i know he is the problem and not microsoft.
Will Sony replace any of those $500 - $600 Playstations when they launch I am sorry any of you guys are having problems with your Xbox 360s but the same thing will happen with Playstation 3 except way more faulty systems, I would like to meet the first guy that buys a faulty Playstation 3 and buys back another one LOL.
I am sorry for all you guys out there with problems with your Xbox 360s I bought one the first day it came out and I never had a problem with it, games will freeze every once in a while but that's because the games were rushed not the system, and as for that person who had to replace there Xbox 360 4 times you are a LYING Sony Playstation Fanboy, and I personally Know 2 other people who have Xbox 360 and they never had a problem, on the other everyone I know has had a broken Playstation 2, no lie
