Peter Molyneux kicked off Microsoft's GamesCom press conference with a bang by announcing Fable III for the Xbox 360. Said Molyneux, the game will be something "new, fresh, and different," and to do that they're tossing out one of the "foundation stones" of Fable-like RPGs.

Molyneux never did reveal what that foundation stone was, but he did set out a rather ambitious goal for Fable players in this new installment. This time around, players' ultimate goal is to make the transition from being the child of Fable II's hero to the land's ruler in Fable III. Bring peace to the kingdom with a benevolent hand, or grind it down to the ground under your steal-shod boot -- the choice is up to you.

Fable III is currently slated for a 2010 release.

Following up on the Fable III announcement, there's also something in store for the game's forebear, Fable II. Starting on September 29, Microsoft and Lionhead will be releasing Fable II in bite-sized downloadable episodes on Xbox Live via Fable II: Game Episodes. Perhaps best of all for those who have yet to experience the game, the first episode will be free of charge.

In the first episode, players will experience childhood and the trials of being a young adult in the world of Albion. After completing the chapter, players have the choice to then purchase the next installment or, in select regions, the entire game. Players can also choose to buy the full game at retail and continue from where they stopped.
