Epic's Rein responds to DVD format issues, user-generated content

Unreal Tournament 3 - Image 1

Yesterday's comment from Epic Games VP Mark Rein about the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3 managed to bring about some controversy among gaming circles. Rein was earlier quoted as saying that the Xbox 360's disc size wasn't big enough to hold all the data meant for UT3. The comment was factual enough, but it happened to get twisted into a critique of Microsoft's console rather than an assertion of plain truth.

This prompted Rein to chime in on the company's official message boards regarding the matter:

The simple facts state that the optical disc on the PS3 holds more data than the optical disc on the 360. If we exceed size of the 360s optical disc then we'll have to find alternative ways to get the content to 360 users such as making it downloadable. Adding a second DVD to a game like UT3 would be a challenge because when playing online you might not know exactly what map you're going to be playing next and we have to be able to accommodate users of the core system. So does that mean the disc on the 360 might have a map or two less? Possibly although it is too early to tell for sure.

Rein added that there were "perfectly good strategies to cope with the situation", such as offering downloadable content across the different platforms. In addition, he also mentioned that a good portion of the extra content would actually come from users who made mods for the video game.

Speaking about mods, Rein also noted that while allowing Unreal Tournament 3 mods on the Xbox 360 wouldn't become a reality just yet, he was still hopeful that Epic Games and Microsoft could come to some sort of agreement on the matter. As Rein wrote on their message boards,

When it comes to user created mods on the 360 - we will work with Microsoft to find a way to support them. We just don't have all the answers today and it isn't our chief priority at this very moment because we already have our hands completely full shipping UT3 on PC and PS3 as well as shipping Gears of War on PC.When we get those out of the way, and get a little time to spend with our friends and families, then we'll get back on this issue and figure it out.

Dumb. Put singleplayer on one disc, multiplayer on another.

Thats what I was thinking. As for user created mods, just put them in the marketplace like they do with XNA games.

And the burn continues...Silence is bliss, no doubt. I wonder where Ms. Cummin Cents and AxSxSxMxIxLxK is...I can see their argument now.

"Why have it on BD when it's going to be installed on the HDD anyways? I'd rather buy it for $60 on HDDVD then pay an extra $10 for extras since it's going to be THAT GOOD. Any true gamer should be rich and have a 20 GB HDD for $100 and is willing to pay for extra content, which comes free on the PSux3. I am a true gamer since I own both, but will get it for the XBlowx711 since it's a FPS machine."

OR

"I was never looking forward to this game anyways. Losing this isn't all that bad, since it's not exclusive and the PS3 version will be better. Halo 3 and BIosucks is enough to tied me over along 34234234232 other FPS that play the same."

Have you actually run out of retarded things to say Spectre, so you copy-paste from the other article about the DVD issue? A new low for you.

How is that even possible?

Single player maps will also be multilayer maps, except for a few perhaps, but the issue here is that their isn't enough space for even single or multiplayer even if their own their own disk.

# funny....Guest 2007-08-16 03:08
Just makes me laugh that he said the problem isn't their number 1 priority. And even more so, they'll only deal with the issue after they have released those other games, and have spent time with their families and friends. LOLZZZ

Just shows that microsoft rushed the xbox360, in order to best both sony and nintendo. But ended up with a system which does produce good graphics, but is should not be categorized in the "next-gen consoles" list at all. Nintendo brought something new, Sony took their time and took things even a step further from the ps2.

microsoft did none of these things, added a hdd, so what. Old xbox could be modded with a hdd. The failure rate is outstanding. My old xbox only died, cause I plugged it into a wall outlet in another country whose voltage was double that of america's, silly me, was young back then. But there were no red rings of death. They better get their acts straight, or I can see the end of the gaming devision in microsoft.

# there was an articleGuest 2007-08-16 05:02
saying that microsoft will allow MMOs to require hard drives from xbox360 users. here it is:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,135969-c,games/article.html

this is ridiculous, but gives unreal III a way around this problem. This will however, ***** over 20% of 360 (core) owners.

# 9 Gigs isnt enoughGuest 2007-08-16 08:31
if 9 gig isnt enough for the game then maybe they need to cut some fat... i mean how many high-end pc games take anywhere near that space? I hope they start requiring the harddrive... i know there are core users that would be left out but there are a lot of used 20gigs floating around from people that upgraded to 120. i personally do not care if a game takes up more than one disc.

Remember that one time that disk 2 of 3 on the PS1 got lost somewhare and couldnt find it and had completly screwed the game over because you need "three" disks to play it? not only that why is microsoft's xbox360 always involve you having to spend even MORE money to get anything done when its involved? how long do you have to wait to have a game that is 30 or 40 Gigs compressed to two DVD 9 disks uncompressed then TRANSFERRED to your HDD? how long will this take again? and even with a hundred Gigs of data storage youll just may use up all of that space with only 10 HDD only xbox360 games, then have to buy ANOTHER harddrive from microsoft that have a set storage while a ps3 can get a 100 Gig PC harddrive for LESS. it whould be like me having to buy another memory card for my ps2 because all of my saves from my 40 ps2 games cant fit on one card! im sure the framerate issue for the PS3 can be resolved for in due time because its unique architecture look at how killzone 2 and UTC3 look and the framerate is still good. I think that if you can make a good looking game for the PS3, you as a programmer just expanded your knowlage so can work with new better technology and make a better looking and more complicated game and stop limiting yourself to a tried and true hardware that may reach its limit a two years or so down the road...

And see, i diditnt even had to mention the defective rate OR the disk scratching issue through all of this

the ps3 ONLY fault is the price

# Doesnt matterGuest 2007-08-16 09:45
None of this matters, UT is one of the only games I still play on the PC. With all the mods and custom maps I can't see it working well with either console. PC is where this game should stay.

games on a computer instalation dvd are highly compressed and are extracted and installed on the computer. Th game on a console runs for the most part right off the disk

# what a rediculous argumentGuest 2007-08-16 18:04
I only read as far as your multiple disc argument and stopped, after deducing that you must be either very young or very stupid. If you were to lose say Disc 2 of a 3 disc set, there is still a chance you can complete or at least PLAY some of the game. With one disc if you lose it, you lose the whole game.

I'm not saying multiple discs are any better than one, but that was a stupid argument.

You make me feel ashamed to be a fellow PS3 fan.
