Mark Rein - Image 1Rumors have been circulating that Microsoft will be purchasing Epic Games, the developers of Gears of War, for a cool US$ 1 billion. While this has yet to be confirmed by either organization, Epic Games' president did have a few choice words about the issue.

In typical Rein fashion, he took these rumors in stride, saying that while he hasn't seen the article about the predicted purchase, he and the people at his company would prefer if they started at US$ 2 billion. He justified this by saying, "We don't want anyone thinking that we're cheap."

While this neither confirms or denies the rumor, his comments on selling the development studio show that its going take a lot of money for any company to get ownership of Epic Games.

$$$

when we consider that MS is prepared to dump billions from the outset with the release of the 1st Xbox to gain a firm grip on the developing market for video games then a buy out at Epic is not strange news. If it happens is another thing. As for cost MS would probably not be worried. The market is expanding fast and there is a lot of potential for a high return on investment if you have the $$$ to buy in to it. What really remains to be seen is will MS through purchase of such companies be able to deliver games that people want. Halo was from Bungie Studios but with MS backing but most of the truly great games are coming from independant companies. Only time will tell. I only worry that Apple is great with small market share whilst Wndoze is so so but almost world domination. :( :) take your pick.

Bad for Epic

If they allow MS to buy them, they will be forced to Keep making the same $***** game all the time. Similar to Bungie and Halo. I would rather Have Epic bought by Sony, then they can tell them, make whatever games you want, your free to explore. That would actually benefit Epic and Sony. LOL Thats right 1 billion is cheap. If they offer 20 billions thats enough right....;)
