Defrag Your Xbox 360 Hard Drive

Ó

Would you like your Xbox 360 hard drive to run a bit faster? Well, thanks to Bethesda Game Studios, there is a fix to do just that.

Apparently, this results from long load times for the newly released Elder Scrolls Oblivion. However, this fix should help load times on your other 360 games too.

Here's the scoop:

"Oblivion uses the Xbox 360 hard drive extensively to cache (copy and reuse) game data. This is done to optimize all loading the game does. It has been found in rare cases on some Xbox 360's that the cached data can get overly fragmented. This exhibits itself by the game taking a long time to load anything from menus, dialogue, sounds, objects, levels, and more.

To solve this problem, reset your Xbox, and hold down the A button as the game is booting up. If any button is held while Oblivion is loading, it will clear its hard drive cache, and create a new one. Once you see the “Bethesda Softworks” logo video, the game is already loaded, and the cache should have been cleared.

Note, this does not effect your game in any way other than loading. You will not lose any saved data."

ehm...hardly a defrag. The cache file(s) is deleted.

I have been recieving numerous auses between interacting with NPC's and sifting through menus.

I was afraid my 360 was on the fritz cause I know the HDD was supposed to speed things up, not slow them down.

I wish this was made more aparent in the manual, though, as my initial read through I could not find anything like this - very helpful news none the less!

The only issue I have with this game is the massive pop in outside of cities. This wouldn't fix that though would it?

This is just the clearing of the cache.

It helps even on other games to clear the cache when they have issues. But with NXE you can do all this from the System Menu under Memory.

The actual HDD by M$ doesn't need defragmentation due to it's design. It's already running multiple partitions which keep the fragmentation so minimal that it's not worth messing with.

However, the cache is important to clear with certain games, especially ones that all of a sudden stop working because sometimes it's just some data that got corrupted or a bad file loaded into the cache. So still helpful to know this info.

But most definitely NOT an actual defrag.
