Debunked: Xbox 360 bricking rumor due to Live update

Toshiba/Samsung driveAlthough everyone was waiting for the latest Xbox Live update with bated breath, there was a concern among modders that it would somehow render their Xboxes unplayable, at least on Live. And while Microsoft would be justified in banning the modders on Xbox Live, going so far as to totally brick their systems or drives seemed far-fetched.

The rumor. Nonetheless, there was a rumor floating around the web (we reported on this rumor in an earlier article), and some reported bricks. What was needed was solid analysis by someone respected in the "scene."

It's a good thing the guys over at Team Xecuter have been checking out the reports and doing some good testing. Apparently, one of their friends was unlucky enough to "brick" their Xbox. Here's the details about the subject:
  • Samsung MS28 Drive
  • Flashed with Xtreme v3.3
  • E66 error after Fall Update
  • Red lights / No boot to dash
The surprise. Even after the update, the drive firmware wasn't modified. The before and after dumps of the firmware were the same (MD5 checked). A simple upgrade from Xtreme v3.3 to Xtreme 4.2a was enough to bring back the whole console, including the DVD drive to life. And not only that, it still boots pirated *ahem* backup discs, which means that the update is safe for all the modders. It also seems that the problem is present in a few Samsung MS25 drive Xboxes, but again, it's just a case of being with the wrong firmware at the wrong time.

What was it? Personally, I think it was just incompatibility between the Xbox dashboard update and the DVD drive firmware. Even though the odds of Microsoft banning the modders was high, and it wasn't too difficult to do it either, they refrained from doing it. A simple reason could be that they don't care about it until someone can run unsigned code on it. And thinking about code, the latest update also allows you to run your XNA-created homebrew on the Xbox 360, which means that the incentive of trying to find a way to run unsigned code is very small.

Another probability is that Microsoft could be waiting for all the Live users to get their updates, and then ban them all at once. But then, it's just another baseless speculation which would be turned into another rumor (and then it will be our unfortunate duty to have to report on the rumor when it gets too big).

Still, if you're a modder, do take care while going on Live. A banned Xbox later, there probably won't be anybody to listen to your cries.

hose who had theirs bricked for no reason: I feel sorry for you.

For those who have modded 360's: yours NEED to be bricked. Anybody who mods a 360 needs to have it destroyed before their very eyes.

» you modders

Get what you deserve, try and get someone for free. You should be prepared to get burned.

Little kiddies should cry to their moms for another one.

» hmm

Hopefully you poor people have warranty.

by alk3 - 2006-10-31 23:08
» worry about your own POTENTIAL problems

i got samsung ts ms25 drive. Apparently this is happening on TS m28's. I THINK you can only check by getting to the top of the dvd (by opening your box.)

Yes i have modded FW, 4.2B and everything is fine so far. Didn't something happen to alot of people on the first update?

All you people out there worrying and getting pissed over modded FW users, i think you need to go slag off M$ first, and worry about YOUR own console first. I'm on my 3rd box and the fans are broke on this already, and its 2 months old so i've had enough.

by alk3 - 2006-10-31 23:13
» so

so yeah i feel sorry for people with *****ed consoles, cos i know what its like, and especially to people with unmodded boxes, because i know all too well what that feels like.

BTW, if you're warranty has expired the only way to sort out the 3 red lights is to flash your dvd drives with the newest version 4.2

sorry, not the kind of response M$ want to hear but looks like if they don't sort things out people will HAVE to flash their drives to FIX their mistakes... bit ironic but yeah.

» Three Red Lights w/in 10 minutes of Fall Dboard Update!

I have an unmodded Xbox purchased 2/17/06 Manufactured 1/3/06. Downloaded Fall update 0200 10/31. Streamed a Guns N Roses video that was 6 odd some minutes long then tried to enter the friends tab of the dboard and blam it froze! My disc tray looks identical to the one at the top of the page here. Called 10/31 10 a.m. and they told me it would cost $140 to have it repaired in Texas. Thanks MS not I can't play GOW which I have already paid for preorder! They've given a whole new meaning to halloween.

Sincerely,

Tim Miller

PS My friend is a game tester in Redmond for xbox/360 in the asylum building. He told me he knows 5 people whose decks bricked that day; all unmodded, unflashed.

Modders and Pirates are the worst thing that ever happened to the internet. Here is a clue, GET A JOB!!!. Developers are doing less and less to make good games. WHY you ask because of YOU!!!!. Eventually there will be a handfull of developers left and they will have deep pockets. BUT DON"T EXPECT GOOD GAMES. I hope that eventually GOVERMENTS take notice of the IDIOTS that take everything for free. But still pay hard earned money for the PC but stea everything else. KIDS its only a matter of time before the LAW says we have had enough. ISP'S will be forced to handover everthing. GOOD JOB PIRATES now we lose what freedom was LEFT. WHY NOT BUY IT AND APPRECIATE IT.
