Datel "disappointed" at MS for storage device lockout

Xbox 360 - Image 1Over the weekend, news came out that Microsoft will now be removing unauthorized storage devices on your Xbox 360 via a system update. A lot of people didn't look too kindly upon this initiative, and apparently, Datel is on the side of gamers on this one, too.

The third party peripheral firm told CVG through a rep that they are "disappointed" at this step taken by MS. "We are following this issue and awaiting the outcome like everyone else," said the rep.

If the Major Nelson blog is to be taken at face value then we're disappointed to see that Microsoft are taking these steps to prevent customers from exercising their freedom of choice. Everyone is looking for ways to make their cash go further at the moment and we believe that Max Memory offers a good value, high capacity, alternative to the official Memory Unit.

» congrats m$

you finally lost me as 360 customer...

[rant]

i really didn't like how you locked other companies out of the HDD market, but this is just stupid. this is the last straw.

you almost lost me refusing to repair a modded console. so i voided the warranty, nowhere else have i ever been refused service i was willing to pay for.

so yeah, screw you.

Datel on the side of gamers my ass. They're just mad because they won't make money off of the 360. But they are right about the player's choice though.

I'm going to start putting $ on M$ again. This is just greedy. Now they can actually f***over people that bought 360s. This is as bad as the PSP Go(I'd want it if it was $100 like the PHAT).

» wtf

i'm not gonna pretend like i don't already hate M$, but this is frickin stupid. if sony ever takes away my ability to use my external, then i'm gonna have to bite the bullet and go back to pc.

» Wow

That, is just low. So now on top of charging absolutely insane prices for their own storage units, they're completely blocking the use of all others? MS needs another big lawsuit to put it in its place, this sh*t shouldn't be legal

PS3... i'm coming back home! And no not THAT Home! I'm just waiting for a guy to call me back this week to trade me his new PS3 Slim for my Elite. :)

BTW, if you signed up for their Twitter, Zune, Facebook beta test, and you don't have an official storage device, I suggest you to go back onto that Connect site and back out of it.

» WOW you guys are biased

If you owned a business, you wouldn't want your consumers buying 3rd party products when they could buy yours.

Mabie A. loves starting anti-Microsoft comment circle-jerks, and to be honest, it's getting a little old.

I'm not pro-Microsoft, I'm just anti-whining and *****ing.

» Hmm....

Datel from the looks of it wants to profit from the MS sales. Like they did with DA and Co's Pandora Battery. Goddamn theifs and cowards.

Aren't you whining about too?

I've owned a business for a few years, and I personally think when your product is doing great and your making money to not piss off the customers by taking away from the product to increase sales. Customers usually tend to notice when you take away from a product just to rip them for some extra bucks.

» wrong

We aren't being biased. I own an XBOX 360, XBOX and PS3 and I love my 360 but what MS is doing is stupid.

By locking out all 3rd party storage devices, this stifles competition and also takes freedom of choice away from customers.

What's next, banning 3rd party controllers on the 360?

I use 3rd party controllers on my systems because they are cheap. I use a NEO SE controller on my 360 because it's better than spending $50 on a controller.

MS just wants more money. You don't see Sony banning 3rd party devices.

You don't want to make your customers angry. If you make customers angry, they have a tendency to go to another company.

» @projectionist

Sometimes you need to make sacrifices to get what you want like M$ they want to rip off people.

In order to do that they need rep. M$ does something STUPID like this and they lose rep and 360 fans get ps3 or something else. So we are not being biased we want freedom like ps3 gives us.

» Re: EugeneE 4 President

I agree with EugeneE i also own a XBOX 360 and a PS3 and sony is waaaay more accesible with 3rd party stuff than MS is. Besides if you lower prices costumers will get more interested in your product and will buy but nooooooo M$ wants more money instead of selling more units of stuff that would be much more income with more units being sell. It's basic economics (and i don't understand a lot of economics XD). EugeneE next elections I'll vote for you. XD
