Console trade-ins: PS3 gets you less cash

Over at Kotaku, Pokemogu sent them an interesting tidbit of Japanese life that kind of makes us wonder. If the Xbox 360 isn't selling very well, how come people are paying more to trade their 360 in?

According to the retail giant known as Sofmap, from which two pictures above were taken, the trade-in rate for the PS3 is around Â¥ 29,700 for a 20GB PS3. On the other hand, Sofmap's willing to pay Â¥ 30,250 for an Xbox 360.

That might seem like a big difference, but in dollars and common cents, that's four dollars between the two consoles (US$ 245 versus US$ 249). We don't know what's going on with Sofmap, but if they're selling the 20GB versions at a premium, they're making a relatively hefty profit compared to eBay fans hoping to sell their consoles for higher than the original asking price.

Basically the shop is going to pay more for the 20gb xbox 360 because it is the premium version (the top end one), whereas the 20gb ps3 is the lower end one. The xbox 360 20gb is in high demand than the core version, and the ps3 60gb is in higher demand than the core version (20gb). Sony fans should be pround that their core version ps3 is only $4 less trade-in price than the premium xbox 360.
