ClassActionConnect investigates Bungie on Halo 3 false marketing |

ClassActionConnect.com, a website run by law firm Blim & Edelson LLC, has launched an investigation which may eventually lead to a class action suit on Bungie Studios and its alleged false marketing of Halo 3. This is being done since some people have complained that the game does not render high-definition resolutions of 720p as advertised.
For those unfamiliar with the issue, Halo 3 natively renders at 640p and simply "scales up" to 720p. This has caused some confusion among gamers, and had some users complaining that the game wasn't really HD.
Bungie's Luke Smith has responded to this allegation. He explained that they used the "slightly unorthodox resolution" because they wanted to preserve as much Dynamic range as possible with the in-game lighting:
We wanted to preserve as much dynamic range as possible - so we use one for the high dynamic range and one for the low dynamic range values. Both are combined to create the finished on screen image.
In fact, if you do a comparison shot between the native 1152x640 image and the scaled 1280x720, it's practically impossible to discern the difference.
Smith also gave word that they wouldn't really be paying much attention to this problem if it weren't for the Internet's propensity for drama. Here's exactly what he had to say in one of the Bungie weekly updates:
In fact the reason we haven't mentioned this before in weekly updates, is the simple fact that it would have distracted conversation away from more important aspects of the game, and given tinfoil hats some new gristle to chew on as they catalogued their toenail clippings.
It doesn't seem that Bungie Studios is really intimidated by the claims that it had misrepresented Halo 3. However, this may not be something that the company should overlook considering that it has just gone independent and is still re-establishing itself.
We'll have to wait and see how the ClassActionConnect investigation goes.
