Checking for the new Xbox 360 heatsink without voiding the warranty

Step two for checking your Xbox 360 - Image 1

Just got yourself an Xbox 360, and want to check if your unit is one of the newer ones with that extended heatsink... without voiding your warranty? You're in luck, as Ben Heckendorn found a nifty way of checking if your Xbox 360 will be prone to the dreaded Red Ring of Death, or not.

The steps involve letting your unit stand upside-down, so you'll be able to see all the little holes underneath the Xbox. The get your digital camera with a flash (or a mobile phone with a built-in camera and a flash) and just stick the lens at the bottom of the unit. You should be able to see what lies beyond the holes, without having to void the warranty by opening it.

If your unit has one of the new heatsinks, you'll be see a dark object just beside the DVD player. If your new unit is not that blessed, you'll just see an ominous, empty void.

This method certainly is a big help for those who really want to get a piece of Xbox 360 gaming heaven, but are worried about getting the ring of doom. Of course, you could always check the manufacturer's date instead, but this method will definitively tell you if your Xbox has the new heatsink or not.

Is it safe to assume that mine has the new heatsinks since I just got it back?

No because sometimes they just give you back a refurbished one without the heatsink.

Thx M$, you finally decided to put better heatsinks in. Lets just hope they work. If so , let the 360 live stronger then before.

a strong light can also cause ring of death and you will void your warranty

you should read the manual first

also we have a special chip that detect the use of a camera in xbox360, you can be banned from live if you take photos, in Microsoft we consider taking photos a form of reverse engineering, we can and will sue you according to law

Oh, I didn't get rich by writing a lot of checks MUAHAHAHA

I found a better way of seeing without relying on a camera. All you need is a tool to pop off the front face plate and a flashlight. Simply pop off the face plate( look up on google if not sure how) and shine the flashlight through the right side of the system and look through the top right hand corner peg hole the face plate would clip onto. You can see directly to the original heatsink and dependent upon what system you have a new set or not. My Xbox 360 was one of the EveryTenMinutes contest and broke 6 months later. It wasn't the overheating issue since I have my system resting on a wireframe metal shelf virtually in mid-air and plenty of breathing room. Even my power supply is resting on top of a another shelf above the system. I sent it in and got back a refurbished one. The only problem it has is screen jitter problems. I have a Samsung 27" 1080i widescreen CRT. Any ideas on fixing this problem or is it just the games with v-sync issues?

you can take that grill off without voiding the warranty. there are 3 prongs that hold each side of the grill on. take a tooth pick and depress the prongs on the top and bottom (for the bottom you will have to remove one of the rubber feet, but it glues back on) and they grill slides off easily. then you can use a flashlight or take a picture to see if you have the new heatsinks. the grill pops back on even easier than it comes off.

as long as you take care of your console it will work flawlessly. i own a launch 360 and it has never given me any problems.

3rrod usually means it isnt getting proper power. make sure your power supply is not loose (and dont use the intercoolers). if you get E74 message then your console is dead. 3rrod just means it isnt getting the proper amount of power.
