CES 2010: Microsoft doubts 3D gaming, says not coming anytime soon

greenberg 3D technology is the buzzword in this year Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas with so many companies showcasing their products. From 3D TV's to some weird looking glasses, it's obvious that 3D is definitely moving mainstream. Now in the gaming world, Sony has already confirmed its support for the technology, so what about Microsoft?

According to Xbox’s director of product management, Aaron Greenberg, were still years away from enjoying the home 3D experience:

"I think there's a lot of questions, to be honest. 3D is great in the theatre, but for the living room? I think we're a long ways away from that. In the theatre there's nothing between you and the experience, but as you have other people in the room and other people walking by, well, it's not the same experience." But he also adds: "If the consumers want it? Fine."

They're just envious because their console can't do that. XD

Seriously, MS is always the last when it comes to innovations. Now they say it's not the time for it, but just wait 2 or 3 years and suddenly 3D gaming is really cool and they will introduce some new device and call it "innovative". You know the drill. *cough* Natal *cough*

Well, I want to say two things:

- This guy hasn't even seen Microsoft's CES keynote. They talked a lot about 3D on computers, so this doesn't seem too coherent.

- Secondly, they already tried it. At least in one situation, with Avatar: The Game, and the results where very poor, so I don't really know what this guy is talking about.

The Xbox just can't do it. End of story.

While I agree MS does that, so does Nintendo and Sony. Plus, 3D gaming won't take off at all since many people can't use 3d tech due to physical ailments. It will be another gimmick game comapanies use to get sales, like motion controls.

after Avatar, and sony unveiling their 3d tv with gran tourismo 5 it doesnt take a genius to figure out that 3D entertainment is the future.

It didn't work because there are very few gamers who have the required displays for a stereoscopic video. Even this time around, it is actually a little too early for the mainstream market to use 3D.

For 3D videos, you at least need 120HZ capable displays. This is for HD resolutions that require 60 frames per second. So in a stereoscopic view, you have to double that.

It's just really painful to buy 120HZ display because not all of them work-as-advertised. You know, kind of like when 1080p was getting big, not all TV's were displaying 1080p, only accepting it, they still displayed it as 720p. Which sucked because the TV was advertised as 1080p HD.

Great, now i have to wear ANOTHER set of glasses on top of my own.

Is this a case of the consumer wanting it, or the producer saying we want it.

Personally, i dont and even if i did i wont be buying a new tv anytime soon for my bedroom.

This MS dude is completely right, in-home 3D tech won't be mainstream for years. Nobody but the richest people are going to go out and buy a $3000 or $4000 3D TV. Most people just recently bought a 60HZ LCD or plasma HDTV, and HDTV itself just recently passed the 50% penetration mark. they're not gonna wanna buy another set for a good 3-5 years...

It has been confirmed by a Sony rep here in Aus that 3D TV's are only going to be $300-$400 difference, to exactly the same but the non-3D version.
