Bungie spills on Halo 3 cinematic sequences

Not wanting to separate the player from the game as soon as the next big cinematics rolls in, Bungie had "travelled the road less taken," making a whole new "difference" in the cinematic feel to the story. According to their recent weekly update, instead of popping a CG-rendered cinematic sporting alienated detail to further the plot, a special cinematics engine, similar to the game's engine, will do the hard work.

Halo 3 from Bungie for the Xbox 360 - now with better cinematics - Image 1

How would it pass for quality? As Bungie puts it, the increased detail for characters in Halo 3 now sports not only proper lip syncing, but also facial expressions to go with it. In fact, Bungie says the models are well modeled and animated that Bungie's Lee Wilson commented on one memorable female character (ahem), bluntly stating, "She ort to ‘ave ‘er shaders fixed, or she don’t arf look nude. I don’t mind the raspberry ripples meself, but Mrs. Wilson would ‘ave a roight fit."

Now you know how disappointed Bungie was with their rather haphazard end-development rush for Halo 2, and they wanted to reassure us fans that Halo 3 has been given ample time for proper development. They've also got an assortment of cinematics experts and animators who've worked on movies like "Shrek," "King Kong," "Lord of the Rings" (on Gollum particularly).

They're already testing out the animations and recorded voice synchronizations, so that might just be the signal that the game is nearing completion. And it's about time, too. Can't wait for it? Neither can we!

So they dont use the in-game engine for cut scenes but they use a special engine for cut scenes.

That is the dumbest idea Bungie could have come up with unless they had to take that route. All the screenshots have proven that the Halo3 engine is not even great at all.

The only reason to use a special engine for cut scenes is limitations. probably because a DVD9 wouldn't hold the game and the cut scenes.

» wtf?

yaknow, you make no sense at all...

Almost every game ever made includes cutscenes that are just movies. Bungie is making it better by actually making more than just damage and weapons dynamic in the cutscenes.

It looks like it has been proven all you like to do is groan over everything you lay your eyes on.

You seem pretty pessimistic Vietone.

I mean, come on, The Halo2 cut scenes were perfect, Am I rite? lols. (Not really.)

I think CG is appropriate when you don't get a real good visual on the character when playing. (Or more like older games that couldn't have a decent video quality in game engine. I.E.: FF7/8/9)

I don't think Halo needs any CG cut scenes and I don't think Halo has ever had any CG cut scenes, it's mostly only been in game engine.

But I take it you must have been suffering your self when you to write about limitations on a DVD9.

I don't think you SHOULD know how the Halo3's engine is going to be like anyways. Just wait and watch whats going to happen with the game.

» MGS cinematic engine was different too

So Halo 3 isn't the first game to use this techique.

Yes it is mainly because of the DVD9 limitation factor, as if you have long duration movies in HD it's going to take up ALOT more room. It's actually alot harder and limiting to do it the way Bungie is doing it.

But having the cinematics look closer to the in game engine, means it doesn't seem so disjointed and draws the player in more, like in MGS, which IMO was done for exactly the same reason.

» cg cutscenes

correct me if i'm wrong but isn't cg cut scenes made into a simple video file on the disc not using much room compared to an 'in game' cut scene which i must say keeps the constant 'realism of the gameplay and action scenes

» .... do we care?

who seriously cares about how much size its gonna take up on the disc unless you plan on Pirating it... otherwise it will still come gift wrapped and ready to rock! lets just wait to play it okay

» kinda..

you are correc t that CG cut-scenes are video files, however a video in HD takes up a LOT more space than camera and animation information does, which is all they really to add for in-engine cut-scenes, as all the model/lighting/texture/shadows/misc. information is already there from the game.

» you are all nubz.

Seriously, look at GoW it used it's own higher resolution textures and what-not on the cutscenes. In-game models were lower poly and texture count, as the in-game cinematics uses must more vidid and detailed textures. This Cinematic Engine for Halo 3 will be a step above that.

» thanks slipstream

i cant wait anymore ok maybe i can i just hope its eyebleeding good

» Haha, right

Just like max 16 players was a "network limitation".

I've been over this with you before, get over yourself, you know nothing. Bungie makes these decisions because they WANT TO, what is so hard to understand about that? I'll take in-game engine cutscenes over what FF does any day, and for the exact reason they give, that things like that break the immersion.

"That is the dumbest idea Bungie could have come up with unless they had to take that route"

What is that even supposed to mean? It's been like this since Halo 1. Have you ever even played Halo?

I doubt know why I even bother with your dumb ass, no doubt you won't even come back and will just continue on believing you know what you're talking about. Oh well
