Bill Gates on the Xbox 360 being more than a gaming machine |
Listed in: Xbox 360 Tags: Bill Gates, Downloadable Content, Microsoft, Sony
We've already reported to you folks about Bill Gates' time with Mercury News, and how good 'ol Bill Gates was doing his job of promoting the Xbox 360 in his opinion better (and it should be, it is his baby) than the the PS3. So now, we'll take a look at his time with Engadget. While the interview talks about everything and anything Microsoft, from the Zune, all the way to Bill's eventual departure from the company, we'll just focus on the Xbox 360 related things (which is pretty hard since Microsoft is trying to make them all interconnect through Live) and just leave the rest for you to discover through our read-link below.
Gates on downloadable content on the Xbox 360 and IPTV
...the content people have to take the leap of faith. With Xbox, where we've got pretty rich protection capability, we'll probably get slightly more video on Xbox than on today's PC hardware. We're going to have the same video service on both, but the catalog might be larger where you've got a stronger hardware protection. We think HD-DVD is great. It's a fantastic experience. I bought a lot of the discs, played with them. It's neat. But over time, eventually online is going to be more important.
On why they got into the Xbox in the first place
...it's a general purpose computer. In terms of that first generation in particular where we were still known as a PC company, the need to make clear how we were prioritizing the needs of demanding gamers, that was super important. That was super important in terms of the culture of the team that was doing the work and how they thought about their marketing. But, we wouldn't have done it if it was just a gaming device. We wouldn't have gotten into the category at all. It was about strategically being in the living room. And this is not some big secret. Sony says the same things. During that first generation, they had more latitude to talk about it since Sony has already gotten their gaming credentials but they were not there even more than gaming.
His vision for the Xbox
For us, people sort of take it for granted -- hey, you do phones, and set-tops, and IPTV and all these things so it's easier for us now that that's part of the message for people to say, of course Microsoft's is going to make Messenger work on the Xbox. They're going to let you look on your phone and see that someone beat your record on this game and schedule an Xbox gaming thing. There's a huge milestone this year -- I'm basically agreeing with what you're saying -- Xbox was a gaming device. Now you can download videos on it. I sit and watch high-def videos never touching a plastic disc. You can take all the PCs in the home and use this extender capability so you get your PC richness up on that screen, in Media Center or whatever, and we're announcing that it's a set-top box so if you're somewhere that's got IPTV now you've got live TV, the most state of the art experience; downloading movies, state of the art; gaming, state of the art; and projection of the full PC experience. It's not a PC but it brings that PC into the living room. So when you talk about convergence it's the first device that says, oh yeah, this is convergence. It's real.
We're now thinking that the next version of Xbox 360 will absolutely focus on convergence. Much in the same way that the Xbox 360 is currently capitalizing on the Xbox Live Network that its predecessor built. Gamerscores on our phones? We're all for it.

For one, they already experienced problems when the service was first launched, the amount of bandwidth to download a movie and the stress on a server is exponentially higher then standard TV shows that people download off of Divx.
A 720p movie in VC-1 or AVC is still large, most people who use cable dont get the ful 4-8mb connection that come companies advertise. Because all that 8mb of bandwidth is shared with everyone in the sector. HD DVD rips are already several GBs, with the good quality versions being 8GB.
Imagine trying to download that while other people in your area are downloading as well, you would be lucky to get 8Gb downloaded in an acceptable amount of time.
Downloading HD content will probably never be a big thing unless you can download an entire HD movie in less then 30 minutes.
The future of HD over the internet is streaming.

Well in any case...now he's like 'oh noes the ps3 is the center of the living room... we're stuck down int he basement on the 15" CRT TV ;; "
Kidding... In any case anyone defending the xbox360 or the Ps3 is retarded because really you don't realize they're different, it's possible sony released the Ps3 to try to win the format war, it's possible bill gates hates sony and only released the xbox360 to try to hurt sony & nintendo!...
But truthfully, Here is what you need for your wants:
I want a gaming system! that's it!, cool games everyone will enjoy(including myself.!) OH AND I WANT TO START MY OWN WEATHER WORLD CHANNEL---^^; : Wii
I want a gaming system, with online, HD movies, HD games, wide selection of games(Good games also... got to love that viva pinata, err... dead rising I mean lol.) and with capabilities to upgrade, buy stuff, download content: Xbox360
I want a gaming system, with online, HD movies, HD games, something that I can also use as a computer or just as my all around media center I can hook up to my TV and show people funny clips on the internet I find on youtube? : Ps3 lol

- It's actually performing quite well on the 360. You it's not just HD, there is SD options too. But HD has been report to be higher in demand. I'd say it's ready, it's there if people want to use it. What's wrong with that? Hater.
"For one, they already experienced problems when the service was first launched, the amount of bandwidth to download a movie and the stress on a server is exponentially higher then standard TV shows that people download off of Divx."
- There was know issues with the launch they have be resolved, I haven't heard any press since about any server issues.
"Imagine trying to download that while other people in your area are downloading as well, you would be lucky to get 8Gb downloaded in an acceptable amount of time."
- It's not going to be a problem in a few years. Plus I download 200 plus GBs through my account a month, and could easily download more if I wanted to. Downloading large size media isn't an issue.
"Downloading HD content will probably never be a big thing unless you can download an entire HD movie in less then 30 minutes."
- With Video Marketplace you don't need to download the entire movie before you start watching it. The 360 determines when you have downloaded enough video and that your bandwidth can cover the rest so you can watch the movie through to the end. So you are totally wrong about the 30 minutes thing, movies go for atleast 1 1/2 to 2 hours. So if you could download 1/3 of the movie in 30 minutes you could play it at that 30 minute mark. 1 1/2 hour HD movie is about 4GB on video marketplace, 1/3 of 4GB is 1.2GB. You would probably need a 3MB to 4MB connection to download that in 30 minutes. Those types of speeds are going to be very common in the next couple of years. Many people already have download speeds beyond that.
Where is your vision Vietone? People like Gates have get vision. I constant laugh at people that say IPTV isn't possible and digital distrubution of large media and games wont work. Look at how far we have come in 10 years! Do you seriously think technology is going to slow down? It's speeding up. All that is needed is vision in big companies and it will happen.

Anyway Vietone , I understand what you are saying but I think there IS a market there to downloadable HD content. As connection speeds increase the content can get pulled down faster + faster. In 10 years time we may be able to pull a GB in a few minutes.
