Beta delayed, monthly fees for Phantasy Star Universe |
Ó
Dazz informed us on our earlier post that the Phantasy Star Universe beta has been delayed, and this has stopped some gamers in their tracks. Of course, there's also the issue of having to pay US$ 10 for the privilege to play, when it's not exactly an MMORPG in the way World of Warcraft is. All in all, while we're excited for the game, we're wondering about the outcome for this Xbox 360 MMO.Sega responds to the news, justifying the cost in their own way. In a story on 1Up, Sega of America Product Manager Ben Harrison explained, "With the online mode, we want PSU to be a highly interactive community that is constantly evolving and adapting to player participation."
In other words, the money put down by gamers will help pay for upkeep of the game and additional content down the line. This includes "quests, maps, bosses, enemies, weapons, armor, clothes, Photon Arts, SUV weapons for CAST and Nanoblast attacks for beast characters, My Room items and decor (including holiday themes)," and a host of other items, according to Sega.
While that's nice and all, postponed beta download dates do make a 10-dollar cost seem hard to accept. But, we do hope Sega gets its groove back and comes up with a hit of an online game for the 360 that won't be just a phantasy as well. If you have any ideas for them to keep PSU going strong, now would be a good time to send them some mail, if only to show concern for the games you love. Although... if there's a chance I can turn my room into a miniature torture chamber, I don't mind waiting a little longer for that option to be up.
Update: According to Phantasy Star Universe's official forums, the open beta will be uploaded to the Xbox Live marketplace this weekend. The download will be up for two days, and you can play to your heart's content till October 18, when Sega prepares for the actual launch of the game. Good luck, gamers, and enjoy the download!

dam this suks.
Wait, you mean to say that delaying the release until it's ready somehow makes you LESS willing to pay $10/month? You'd rather pay $10/month for a game that not only isn't finished, but has bugs? Are you stupid?
Oh wait, this isn't even a release, it's just a free beta... So you're complaining about something you get for free... Nice. Get a life.
"we're wondering about the outcome for this Xbox 360 MMO."
This game isn't for XBOX 360 only! This game is for PC and PS2 too.
hahah i was looked forward this game coming out on the market place today, I dont care if I have to pay $10, im pretty sure its worth the money.
Loads of folk were willing to pay for the last game becuase it was awsome. This will be moreso!
THIS GAME IS NOT A MMORPG...
No one calls DIABLO a MMORPG, and thus it was free... thats like charging to play Halo... teh PSO community wont exist past the Lobby,....
'teh PSO community wont exist past the Lobby' ...
Yeah, just like the last one didn't... uh... last for ... years. Whatever.
6 is a dumbass, nothing else
no, you two are the Dumbasses, because you dont get what i meant. The community is LIMITED to interacting in the lobby,, then you took 4 people, in PSUs case 6, and went into a game session. In a MMOROG there is no limit to the interaction of the community, because you all exist and PLAY in the same world WITh thousands of other players TTHATS the difference between the community of a MMO game, vs a regular online game. Like i said, this is the same concept as Diablo. So #7 and #8 stfu.. nothing else.
PSO & PSU are not MMOs. They're online/offline RPGs with an online focus on group play. Anyone willing to pay a monthly fee for PSU would - logically speaking - be just as willing to pay a fee for any other regular online multiplayer game. Simply put, PSU doesn't require the amount of server maintainance that actual MMOs do (e.g. WOW). PSU is more akin to Guild Wars (which has free online multiplayer). I have little doubt that PSU will be an enjoyable game online, however, that doesn't advocate a monthly fee. The only reasoning for the monthly fee is that Sega is supposedly incorperating downloadable content into the price.
I really enjoyed playing PSO, I was willing to pay the monthly fee to allow me to play online with my friends but in the previous game you never seemed to get any new content?? The only thing that ever happened was the special events e.g. Halloween/Christmas/Easter Rappies and things like White Day...wonderful things in and of themselves but you never got a new weapon, or a new piece of armour or whatever.
I know that some people may say that we did get new quests (such as the Tower Run's) but they weren't really new as they'd already been released on the Dreamcast Version and had just taken a Loooooonnnggg time to be released on the X-Box/360 versions.
To be quite honest i'll be buying the game and i'm almost 100% certain that i'll love the game...I just hope that Sega actually do something with the money i'm throwing at them rather than just count it :(
"The only reasoning for the monthly fee is that Sega is supposedly incorperating downloadable content into the price."
Excatly... this is the SAME excuse Sega used in PSO.. and there NEVER was new content. There was lame quests, ramapat hacking, and Sega never did a thing about it. The said stuff about conent, but the little that did come out, mostly ended up being JP only, or we woul dget it MONTHS later. Sega customer service is terrible. And like the aboce guy said, this is exactly like paying a monthly fee just to play a game online. Theres no mega server upkeep like a MMO game.

Bingo, PSO RARELY got any new content... you were paying a monthly fee for no reason...
I'd rather be charged for extras than have to pay $10 a month.
Say no to having to pay $10 per month to play online!!

Hope this is ok with admins..
Sipep
.00 a month and the .00 fee to play on Xbox live, that is the worst! Xbox live gold users shouldent have to pay the stupid fee to play the game! I mean isint .00 enough?? when ever they make a game thats good they always put a monthly fee just to play it which really bites!! Couldent they just have basic servers that are free?? Oh well this game will not be for me...so what ever...
