Xbox 360 Arcade and Core owners are getting the short end of the stick with the New Xbox Experience. Apparently the update requires a 256 MB memory unit to install. A hard drive is also required for some features to work.

Major Nelson tries to figure out what's what, saying that the press release from Microsoft didn't actually say that the whole 256 MB would be needed for the update itself. The update probably only needs a fraction of that space, and the rest would go to NXE and avatar customization - which you could stand to live without, really.

The bottom line is that Core owners and those with just 64 MB cards are plum out of luck. But as Major Nelson said before, "you don't actually have to use it." Everything's going to be the same if you don't - only everyone else with a larger hard drive would have avatar customization. Uh, that probably didn't make you feel better.

I'm wondering why Microsoft would offer the Arcade for a cheaper price than the Wii, then make them go through the choice of whether to sacrifice their meager 256 MB of storage space for game saves or avatar customization. It's baffling.

Atleast a 256MB Memory Card required you fools. Do you really think this will hold? Or are you just hoping for hits until it's debunked?

Yeah, QJ.net is pretty stupid like that.

» and

that's why arcade should be packing 20GB's.

Hint "Go to ebay, 20GB for 35 dollars!"

Those screenshots quite frankly look horrible. If this really what the Xbox 'experience' is like I don't want to have it.

» I won't put it on my xbox for sure

I prefer the existing one. There is nothing wrong with the current interface and I already a Wii for these stuffs ;)

Easy to create an argument against MS on this one but then again when the core and arcade were released a part of the original advertising was that people could enjoy games now (past) and upgrade as they desire in the future (now)

Why rant, the original 120 gigs were mega bucks now they have also fallen in price so a core owner today buying a 120 gig to create what was an elite is financially the better than those that bought one originally.......

nuff said, and as Lavino stated he is quite happy with what he has already and many others like him always have the choice to upgrade or whatever whenever they choose.

» About that last part

Actually, no, they don't. If you wish to connect to XBL, even on a silver account, the new Dashboard is a mandatory install. You can choose not to download it all you want, but you can't go online until you do.

To lavino, you do have to download it, but the current dash interface can be found by pressing the Guide button in the new update. Unless you don't have XBL, then of course you don't download anything.

MS should just package the 20GB HDD with the Arcade now that the reg Premium has a 60GB. I doubt a 2.5" 20GB HDD with the 360 case costs them more than $10-$20.

» Oh I see

You guys thought that "you don't have to use it" + you don't have to download it. Unfortunately that's not the case. Major Nelson means you don't ever have to look at it, just press the Guide when you turn the console on and in games to use the same Dash as we have now. You do need to install the update tho, so if you don't press Guide your Dash will look like those screenshots. No way around it

» hmmm

plus sign should be an equals sign

Why is that still not fixed QJ? It's been over a year. I would like to be able to use equals signs...

» ouch

I stand corrected. i was unaware that it was a mandatory download. That needs fixing otherwise MS Bashing season is open.

I haven't noticed that season ever end.. . . . .

» AWESOME

..

I honestly don't believe people who would like to use NXE would have a 360 without any storage space; they would need the internet connected to their Xbox's and you cannot even create profiles would a storage device, and ofcourse... Xbox LIVE--Halo 3--and saving games.

by Master Chef - 2008-10-10 11:39
» Well

The Arcade comes with a 512 MB mem card. There's some you can do with that, but not much.

When I go to see what's taking space on my HDD, I have 11 GB in game data alone. That's almost an entire 20GB hard drive, since you can only use 14 of that. How anyone could get along with just a 512MB card is beyond me

by shabghai360 - 2008-10-10 12:53
» Nevers.......season end

so i must assume it is alway open season on bashing a company irrelevant of details. Each decision made that may adversely effect a consumer base is a point of argument and therefore a period of time (season) to debate and argument.

Sorry, I do not even know why I bother to clarify myself.

You may just as well shout at your parents for dooming you to die. *****, birth has a built in expiry date.
