Time for the House Rules! Microsoft has now unveiled a set of lists for your Xbox Live Avatars. Not surprising at all considering how the Avatars actually are a representation of your visual self. No beer-guzzling, half-naked, foul-mouthed, hard-partying avatar for you then. Gosh, it's so much like real life.

The primary objective in all this is, of course, to protect the kids from anything that they might not want to find out until they are old enough to hold that vomit in.

Take note that these lists were formed to help XNA developers with their games. Check out the rules yourself, and see that Pinocchio absolutely had no reason to complain.

Oh shut up, you.

Player interacts with their avatar as if it's a separate character
  • A player's avatar does not have an autonomous personality or instinct. The avatar is under the control of the owning player. It can have idle animations and can respond appropriately to game events but it should not interact with the user as if it is separate from the player, try to get the player's attention in an annoying manner.
Violence which causes blood, gore, dismemberment, decapitation, maiming, or mutilation
  • Cartoon violence is allowed. Violence is allowed as long as there is no blood, gore, dismemberment, decapitation, maiming, or mutilation. An example of allowable injuries includes injuries that might befall an avatar in a sporting event such as American football. Avatars can die temporarily to depict failure.
Player's avatar talks
  • The player's avatar should not have their own voice. They are allowed to make individual sounds, such as laughing and crying but otherwise cannot use a voice.
Acts of sexual innuendo or mildly explicit sexual descriptions or images or sexual posturing
  • Sexual acts or terminology cannot be insinuated or enacted.
Excretes obscene bodily fluids or substances
  • No sexual or bodily fluids or substances can come from the avatar.
Glamorized criminal act
  • Criminal activities need to be relevant to the story and are presented unfavourably.
Acts of an aggressive or threatening manner
  • Gratuitous insults, bullying, intimidation or otherwise violent or emotional abuse of a position of power are not allowed. Avatars may leave innocents or bystanders slightly injured, but not dead.
Vulgar or profane act
  • Game-controlled avatars cannot use profane, racist, or discriminatory language, nor can they make obscene gestures.
Use of controlled substances
  • An avatar is not allowed to hold, be seen around or partake in any controlled substances or paraphernalia including, but not limited to, alcohol, tobacco and drugs.

Replace Avatar features
  • The features of an avatar cannot be hidden or in obscured and cannot be replaced with alternative items. Items such as, but not limited to, masks, hats and alternative clothing, are not allowed.
Avatars proportions are not modified
  • The proportions of an Avatar cannot be modified form their original settings. An Avatar can be resized as long as the proportions don't change.

hahaha

No fat avatars, no avatars cumming on another avatar, no avatars brutally hacking another avatar's leg, no avatars smoking pot with the KKK and Nazis while talking about the weather.. Whoever wrote the rules must have had a blast

"The primary objective in all this is, of course, to protect the kids from anything that they might not want to find out until they are old enough to hold that vomit in." God damn number worshipping idiots in this world really make me wonder how humans have survived for a long as they have... We have created amazing technologies like cars, computers, space ships, etc and yet most of us still do not realize that turning a certain age does not magically give people certain abilities. The entire world revolves around trying to make things "safer" for people under a certain age but no one can answer the simple question, why? What will happen if a person under 17 plays an M rated game? What will happen if a person under 18 watches porn? What will happen if a person under 21 drinks alcohol? You may answer "it's just not good for them", but why? Why exactly is it not good for them yet fine for someone over those ages? How is it that every human on the planet will magically be able to handle and understand all of those things when they turn the required age? Please do not be ageist QJ, we have enough ageists in this world...

Avatars where childish in the first place. They don't really cater towards the mature gamers that typicly play the 360, just the young punks who like to yell out crap during fps and play like insane monkeys.

i would of really loved a Mutant Football League game, with players based on my avatar... i guess i'll settle for just regular MLF, are you paying attention EA? also: this does not stop any road rash games using my avatar. again EA, paying attention?

Hmmm

Pretty sure the rules are almost entirely to protect younger children, obviously nothing changes between 17 and 18. I just turned 18 today, I haven't experienced any kind of revelation or feel any different than any day when I was 17. But obviously it's not ok to play hardcore violent games, watch porn and smoke pot at the age of 10 or something. I think the reason they make the age requirement high is because if porn and really violent things were allowed for people under 17/18 it'd be bad for the country's image, and the ruling class doesn't want that. Anyway many lulz @ that list, the guys at MS must've had fun doing it

Happy Birthday Master Chef!

Mine was the 20th! Turned 19. When I turned 18 though, my dad told me I couldn't stay out past midnight. I laughed and came back at 3. He locked me out. So I climbed through his bedroom window haha.. Do something that makes you feel older!

Big difference

C'mon dude. If they allowed a 17 year old to watch porn then pretty soon they'll allow a 16 year old, then a 15 year old, then a 14. And it just goes on from there. It's just like me at work. If I give one person special treatment then I gotta give everyone special treatment. These Xbox rules are being applied because Avatars are an online interaction. Just like moderators on forums and MMO's.

Age is no different then color. Would you tell a black person he cant play GTA because he's black? I don't believe ANY age based system will ever work at anything but discrimination. We need a new system and by the way, Master Chef, Pot smoking is bad at ANY AGE, it is a DRUG and is no different then coke, acid, and the other killers...
