Asian Xbox 360 manufacturers: why the 360 "failed"

Asian XBox 360 Manufacturers: Why the 360 Microsoft already came out with the numbers stating that they have an Xbox 360 failure rate of 30%. However, while most people have been focusing on this figure, it might be good to take a step back to see what really went wrong.

According to certain Asian manufacturers that Smarthouse contacted, the reason for this failure is both cost-cutting in components and poor design. These "mistakes" were attributed to the fact that Microsoft was really trying to beat Sony by releasing their console earlier.

Microsoft have known of this problem for a long time. They are trying to blame component manufacturers but it was a combination of bad design and them (Microsoft) wanting everything cheap. This is what caused the problem along with them wanting to beat Sony to market.

A lot of manufacturers were pushed to deliver components without much testing of the components working together inside the console. You should think of it more as a design question. We had some design issues, and it's a combination of factors that led to the problems.

The president of the Entertainment and Devices Division of Microsoft Robert J. Bach spoke a few words regarding this issue that we're pretty sure Xbox 360 owners would probably want to hear. He said, "Most customers are going to look at it and say, 'Great, Microsoft stands behind the product.' Ultimately, it becomes a positive thought in people's minds."

Is that the way Xbox 360 owners really feel? Especially the people who've had to return their units one, two, three, or even eleven times? Still, it's nice to see Microsoft taking responsibility for the problem and working hard to fix it.

Basically M$ method is to just rush a product to market made sopoorly it breaks for over 33% of the peoplew who buy it, let it linger for 18 months, then when the bad publicity becomes too much, throw a couple of billions on it to make it go away AND call it a good thing afterward... Nice logic there.

» M$ r selfish

M$ r only interested in stealing a bigger piece of pie and desperate too :/

Face it, Sony hav wisely earned their share b4.

M$ make software [AND] counterfeit (MIMMICK) products such as the Zune or woteva, that doesnt even exist in UK - another proof that M$ only interested in stealing a piece of pie

Next time M$ jus stick to making our Windows less buggy ok?

My 360 hasn't broken down but it does make really weird noises, also I know a lot of people with faulty 360's, infact the day I got mine a guy at the store was returning his 4th one.

I gotta agree with the probability the components are cheap and also it sometimes gets a disc read error if I play games with the console standing up.

» Most asians are PS3 or Wii fanboys

why are ps3 fanboys on this board?

Xbox 360 is better in all areas f gaming besides 360 build quality. MS is too fu*kin cheap to put more heatsinks in.

But thx to the new 3 Year red light and 1 year warranty, sony only gives 1 year i believe.

The problem is that the M$ has the money but is using cheap components. The PS3 is using more expensive components and M$ has more money then sony. WTF

Oh and i you looked at sales for each console. Xbox 360 #1, Wii #2, PS3 #3 (far behind everyone)

» Strange isnt it?

Odd that M$ has great games but poor hardware and Sony has great hardware but poor games...it seems to me the only console which is prospering in both adequate hardware and playable games is the Wii!

by ochoaman - 2007-07-08 09:38
» PS3's most likely don't need a warrenty

lol, I do wonder why M$ puts cheap parts in their systems, but Sony on the other hand would rather save all their consumers trouble and frustration by digging deep in their pockets so they supply us with a much more officiant console

another thing to think about is that you're buying a system from a company that build crap OS'

» the reason

why i didn't get an xbox for an entire year and waited for a ps3 cause to me the ps3 has better lineup of games... xbox games are all pretender never-heards... i don't even know what games i'm prioritizing over another come late this year... between Heavenly Sword and Drake (and if MGS makes it) i don't think i'm even going to get GTA this year... Assassins Creed might and so is Rachet... and then i have to get my yearly NBA sim game (either 2K8 or Live)... and i'm still neck deep into Oblivion that I won't even get Ninja Gaiden at launch... honestly I don't even know what games to prioritize anymore and you say the ps3 has poor games??? and then there's this thing called Haze and Warhawk that i have to shove to the back at the moment.

oh and i haven't turned off my ps3 since March 23... let's see an XBox 360 match that.

stop being a dumbass 360fanboy...xbox 360 was out for a year...thats why the sales are high for them..if 360 was released at the same time with ps3 and wii..360 WOULD hit rock bottom..

» I just got mine back...

I dislike M$, but they have great online service and games... Even if they just pour money out to get them. Look at it this way, M$ was going to make their very first dollar of profit at the end of the 2007 fiscal year... Well, not anymore. They just dropped a Billion dollars (1,000,000,000 USD) off the books...

Why should Xbox owners give a damn? I have one, but screw M$, I'm glad they're lost that money. In the meantime, I'm going to have my Xbox repaired when needed for all eternity.

by Clessy - 2007-07-08 14:22
» not about cost

They didnt use cheap parts because they where cheap. They used cheap parts because they where quicker to make and find many cheap chinese distrubuters for the parts. It was all about rushing to the market and being the first one out. This one year leap has pretty much bent sony over and *****ed them in the ass. Because Sony will be at least playing catch up for a year or so more.

I'm pretty sure what most people mean when they say the 360 is better is it has better games and more of them, which it does. I've never seen anyone who honestly believes the 360 is built better than the PS3. If they do they just don't know what they're talking about

well, Xbox 360, who really cares how many consoles have been sold , does every new console sent out after you get the 3ROD count to another console?? right so if M$ made 1000 consoles 300 would be faulty and then they send out another 300, funny that. that means in the end the sold 1300 because they rushed there console, Bill gates said that the RSX was a rushed card, WTF you whole console was rushed and the results are only showing now, you see M$ is like radiation Exposure , u only see the real damage later on , and ppl here it comes. Also just because the Ps2 and Ps1 had SOME ill repeat SOME disk read errors, (8% for ps1 9% for ps2) does that mean its ok to do the same in the ""Next gen"" i honestly dont see what is next gen about the 360, really, what does 360 bring that wasn't available to the last gen . HD-DVD?? o wait, you guys have to pay extra for that, sorry, Wii got motion sensing, PS3 got blu ray RSX FREE ONLINE, home, Wi-FI ( 360 does to but u gotta pay for that) and im sure ive forgot some other crap , but my point is ppl 360 is hardly revolutionary , its got good games but u can only do so much with 9 gig, think about it GTA had to be CUT down because of space issues! cmon ppl Next gen shouldn't have space issues!

.Xbox has good games ill argee to that but there not gonna get any better i think , or maybe they will . but the main point 360 has good games is because its super easy to code for , you can full potential very easily , PS3 is not so easy, Now, last thing ill say here ppl , Bill gates is money hungry.

Well, it used to only be Americans who made stupid comments like this, (probably due to there being so many of you, not trying to say all of you are that thick,) but well done na2rul, you've brought our countries level of stupidity down to that level too.

Ofcourse they're selfish, idiot, they're a company. What did you expect!?

Oh, what kind of idiot bases an opinion on what the UK doesn't get? We dont get anything. Chrono cross and Trigger never made it over here, manhunt 2's banned, Mountain dew has too much caffeine or something for the idiots that run our country and all the good marhsmallowy cereals never got brought out here.

Even if your story is true, why did you put 6 more discs in the drive to scratch? I call BS. Of course you do have a PS3 so it is possible you are that stupid.

If you weren't stupid, you could buy a new laser and put it in yourself for about $20. A whole new drive could be bought for $50 if you know how to flash the firmware with the keys from the console, or you can just swap the drive boards.

But most likely you're just another fantard making up BS stories because of the convienent PS3 cameo at the end.

» Console Problems

I've had an Atari, NES, SNES, Master System, Genesis, Gameboy, Game Gear, Sega CD, 32X, Gamboy Advance, PSP, DS, Playstation 1 & 2, they ALL have had their share of problems, I may get a PS3 and Wii eventually, but for now my 360 is just fine. If and when I need to get my 360 repaired, fine hey I still love the games. Now I know the failure rate is very high, but I've never seen support like this for any piece of technology. Given Microsoft is loaded, but how many companys are actually willing to go out on a limb like this for their companies? Not many that's for sure. Manufacturing and design aren't always perfect. Don't get all Sony fanboyish on me either because let's not forget their little mishap with all those defective batteries that caused fires. At least Microsoft's problems aren't threatening your life, you're just without a console for 2 or 3 weeks. Am I an Xbot? Absolutely not, I most likely will get a PS3 depending on games and what they do with the price in the future, I never buy a console upon release, usually 1-2 years after. As far as the Wii is concerned I may get one, though I really need to watch and see because as I like the concept but at this point it is looking to be a total gimmick..... plus, waving a piece of plastic in my hand doesn't make me feel more involved in a game, I like my button pressing like the good ole days thank you very much. I think Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are all top notch companies and have earned their spot in the gaming world. And hey they all make mistakes, Microsoft has owned up to theirs, as has Sony, though Nintendo never did offer an apology for that joke of a Virtual Boy and having to blow in your NES....lol Anyway stop bashing people about their console choice and enjoy what you have, or twiddle your thumbs while waiting to get it repaired, don't stop gaming people, but please stop being freakin babies.

yeah, Pretty much all consoles have had isssues in the past. I remember blowing on the NES carts or using a pencil eraser to clean the copper on the pcb. I cut the crap out of my hand hooking up the original sega CD add-on too on that metal plate. Though it worked ok after that. My first Playstation had to be hung upside down from the ceiling with a prostitute blowing into the cooling vents to play games :)

PS2 scratched my first few games. I had to lay it horizontally and it stopped doing that. Later replaced the unit.

Anyway, both systems (xbox360 and PS3) seem good. I know about the ring but I keep my unit horizontal in a open cool area. Not on top of other electronics or in a closed space like a tv stand or stereo rack.

I think people just have to be fanboys for whatever system they have. The reality is each system can/does/will do something better then the other or offer something different then the other. When everything is produced for the masses and offer the same experience will they be happy? I am glad that we have choices.

Good luck on watching your PS3 scratch your games to, or get the red light of death, or have your PS3 not even accept your games. PS3 is having the same problems the 360 is.
