Aaron Greenberg - Image 1Well, whadd'ya know? Aaron Greenberg did step up to clarify a few things about Steve Ballmer's big announcement earlier today, and he didn't wait a day to do so. Greenberg, who is the director of product management for the Xbox 360, was quick to clarify: "There will be no new console."

"We're not going to be launching a new console any time soon," Greenberg told Kotaku in a phone call today. "I really believe he was speaking about Project Natal." The announcement, which indicated a "new Xbox 360" to be released in 2010, sounded as if Natal will be built into an Xbox 360.

We want to make sure people know that we're excited about Project Natal," he added, "But we're barely halfway through this generation. We're happy with the Xbox 360, so there are no changes from that standpoint. For the time being, we're really just showing a whole new category of gaming." Greenberg did mention that they've looked into the idea of Natal being built into the Xbox 360, " but we haven't announced any details for something like that," he said.

Greenberg went on:

We are saying that the Natal will run on the Xbox 360, so there's no new hardware to purchase.

What we're doing that's unique is, instead of asking you to invest in a new generation of hardware, a generation that's already well established, extending the experience even longer by adding this whole new category of experiences with Project Natal.

That ought to set one thing straight - no new Xbox 360, and Microsoft's stand about Natal running on the existing Xbox 360 is here to stay.

Natal really does get console-like treatment:

» barely halfway

next gen in 2012? hopefully the mayans got it wrong...

hopefully they will see the error of their ways and support the 360 for at least 3 years after the next generation starts... huge blunder to kill the xbox, kids are still being raised on ps2 and they blew that opportunity.

» yay i get to say it again!

MS is considering Natal as its next gen console! They dont want us to know that so they have to clarify when they mess up and call it a console. Expect a lot of "next gen right now" talk from MS as we get closer to a Natal release and probably through Natals running.

You maths are wrong btw, the 360 launched November 2005, if we're half way in November 2009. That would make it November 2013 before we see a new xbox360 (assuming they stick to November release dates). That would be an 8 year reign. They had to drop the xbox1 because Nvidia are bastards and were charging them for every xbox1 made at the same rate they had been since day 1 of the xbox1 launch. So Nvidia in the end were being payed current gen prices for the GPUs for 5 year old technology. The 360 will not suffer this same fate...
