360's 120GB HDD worth only US$ 100? |

Ó
Is the Microsoft-branded 120 GB HDD worth only a hundred bucks? That seems to be the assertion over at the Shindakun blog, which points to some interesting facts about Microsoft's Elite add-on and asks readers whether or not the sum of the parts is equal to its current value. When the Xbox 360 Elite was recently dissected, the Elite 120GB HDD was revealed to be a Fujitsu MHW2120BH drive with a special Microsoft-issued casing. Shindakun notes that the actual drive-in question costs around US$ 100. As you can see, there's a big 80 dollar difference between the Fujitsu drive and HDD, so what justifies the increase in price?
Well, one of the original draws of this new device was how it was comparable to a self-powered external drive. Shindakun asserts that the Elite drive isn't actually self-powered, since you have to turn off the 360 before you can plug it in. As noted in the blog entry,
What Microsoft has created is simply a proprietary SATA to 360 connector, which is housed in a plastic shell with the hard drive. They then tried to convinced everyone that itÂ’s the equivalent of an actual external hard drive. Which itÂ’s not.
So, we leave it up to you to make a decision: Does the sum of the parts equal the price of this new-fangled gadgetry? We suppose the public will choose for themselves once the Elite goes live in stores everywhere. Still, for the hardcore gamers out there who really want to know more about what they're getting into, this does make one pause and think.

PS3 has multiple USB ports, Xbox only has one
PS3 gives you a dvd player while Xbox doesnt, you have to buy an add on just to watch movies.
PS3 gives you 1080p on all games, while xbox only goes to 720i and thats only for a VERY few games.
If you buy sonys psp you can hook it up to the PS3, you cant hook it up to an xbox because its from microsoft.
PS3 can have up to 8 controllers for intense split screen action, xbox only supports 2 controller ports.
You can use any Sony blutooth headset with the PS3, but xbox you have to buy a headset seperately just to talk.
PS3 has hmdi support so all games are in super high definition glory. xbox doesnt have hmdi connection, but they probably couldnt use it anyways since their games only go to 720i.
PS3 has revolutionary motion sensor that bring games to life, xbox doesnt have it.
and PS3 has free unlimited online with zero lag and all the features of xbox but more, but with xbox you have to pay 50 dollers a month just to use your xbox.

wrong, the 360 has 3 and that can be increase by using a usb hub
"PS3 gives you a dvd player while Xbox doesnt, you have to buy an add on just to watch movies."
wrong, that was with the orignal xbox. The 360 has a DVD player built in.
"PS3 gives you 1080p on all games, while xbox only goes to 720i and thats only for a VERY few games."
wrong. The PS3 is 1080p for a couple of games. Most are in 720p. The 360 has most games in 720p, and some in 1080p.
"If you buy sonys psp you can hook it up to the PS3, you cant hook it up to an xbox because its from microsoft."
wrong. You can connect the PSP to the 360 and use it as an external drive.
"PS3 can have up to 8 controllers for intense split screen action, xbox only supports 2 controller ports."
Who would want 8 controllers on one TV? talk about crowded. Also, the 360 supports 4 controllers.
"PS3 has hmdi support so all games are in super high definition glory. xbox doesnt have hmdi connection, but they probably couldnt use it anyways since their games only go to 720i."
HDMI makes no difference. a good component cable will be as good as a HDMI cable. Also, as said above some most 360 games are in 720p and some are in 1080p.
"and PS3 has free unlimited online with zero lag and all the features of xbox but more, but with xbox you have to pay 50 dollers a month just to use your xbox."
its $50 a year, and if you dont want it, you dont have to pay it. You can get a XBL silver account for free.
I'd rather have a good unified gaming service where you pay 18 cents a day, than a free one which is crap
PS3 has revolutionary motion sensor that bring games to life, xbox doesnt have it."
It rather have rumble than tilt control.

This item is guaranteed to work. Guaranteed to stay working. Guaranteed not to break your box. And does not void your warranty.
On top of the drive, you also get: Converter. Housing.
Go buy that $100 drive and plug it in. I'll wait. What? You can't? Ahhh... Yeah, that's right, you need a connector. MS provides that.
And don't forget all the R&D that went into it, also. They had to rewrite their software to support both 20GB and 120GB, making sure it didn't break any previous games to do so.
MS is a bunch of money-grubbing bastards, but they aren't stupid. They haven't priced this any higher than any other company would have in this situation.

It's not $100
It's $80
And that's not factoring into the huge bulk discount wholesale rate that M$ would be getting them for.

some additions: 'me' is a prick - + no lag depends on the hosts connection [noob]
anyway - he can go play 'lag free' with his 2million or so potential PS3 users - while we XBOX 360 users have 9.5million users connected to Live - personally, i'd pay 9pence a day for this service.
o yeah: PS3 has nowhere near the same amount of downloadable conecnt as XBOX Marketplace [+ wont ever coz they make developers pay for putting vid's, demo's etc on the PSN]
who's laughing now

no drive worth anything would break your box, or void a warranty.
if microsoft was so short sighted they hardcoded everything for a 20gig drive, it'd their own damn fault and i shouldn't have to pay for it.
add to that the fact that 99% of content on the drive will be paid for and it's still a ripoff.
with all that said, i will never buy the 120 hdd seperate. i will buy an elite 360, and i will swap my 20gig with a 120gig when it becomes available, and it will soon enough...

The Hard Drives still fail can peole have had problems with them and will always continue to have problems with them as long as MS is using Hard Drives that spin.
Anyone that moves wears itself out. Eventually, depending on usage and conditions, it will fail. The larger the hard drive, the higher the chance of failure.
The Hard Drive is going for as low as $80 online. Factor in the discount MS gets and its even cheaper. So they are making $100 profit on every single 120GB they sell.
Its microsofts problem for making their hard drive proprietary. Why should the end user be punished with the cost of taking a normally functioning hard drive and making it proprietary?

-Xbox has 3 usb ports, PS3 has 4.
-Xbox and PS3 play DVDs. Xbox upscales them. Ps3 has Blu-Ray though.
-PS3 supports 1080p in all games, but not all games take advantage of it.
-PS3 supports 7 controllers, not 8. Xbox also handles up to 4 controllers.
-You can use any USB or Bluetooth headset on the PS3, not just Sony stuff. This is one area Sony did win out on.
-There is no such thing as 720i.
-PS3's Sixaxis motion is not revolutionary, but it does do a good job. Still needs rumble.
-PSN is actually quite good for being free. I've never experienced lag, but there isnt nearly as much content or all-in-one experience as XBL.
The true advantage to the PS3 is it is a far more open system. The hard drive, headset, and OS are all customizable by the user. The Xbox however currently has more support and better integrated online experience. Neither console is perfect.

Oh and your right about the software issue, they did have to update the system to allow for 120 gb of use, many people have made their own hd's and could onlyuse the 20gb that are recognized by the software, now though you can make you own and once the new drives are out you'll be able to use all 120gb. Do it yourself and you'll save at least 80 greenbacks :)

No.
PS3 has multiple USB ports, Xbox only has one
It has 3.
PS3 gives you a dvd player while Xbox doesnt, you have to buy an add on just to watch movies.
Yes it does, the PS3 actually has blue ray not dvd.
PS3 gives you 1080p on all games, while xbox only goes to 720i and thats only for a VERY few games.
How many games are out for the PS3?
How many TV's can actually output 1080p?
Go look it up.
If you buy sonys psp you can hook it up to the PS3, you cant hook it up to an xbox because its from microsoft.
You can hook up the PSP with the sbox 360, as well as the Zune and the Ipod.
PS3 can have up to 8 controllers for intense split screen action, xbox only supports 2 controller ports.
You didn't count the wireless controllers.
You can use any Sony blutooth headset with the PS3, but xbox you have to buy a headset seperately just to talk.
The $400 premium xbox brings one.
PS3 has hmdi support so all games are in super high definition glory. xbox doesnt have hmdi connection, but they probably couldnt use it anyways since their games only go to 720i.
The Elite xbox will have it soon too. And it's 720p there is no 720i.
PS3 has revolutionary motion sensor that bring games to life, xbox doesnt have it.
The Xbox controller has rumble. While the PS3 controller has tilt sensor not motion sensor.
and PS3 has free unlimited online with zero lag and all the features of xbox but more, but with xbox you have to pay 50 dollers a month just to use your xbox.
Xbox Live is FAR more popular and has A LOT more players.

WelshBluebird had it right, everything you said is completely wrong. However, he forgot to mention one thing.
Me said
"You can use any Sony blutooth headset with the PS3, but xbox you have to buy a headset seperately just to talk."
Now, when you said that xbox user's must buy a headset to talk, your completely wrong. EVERY Xbox 360 comes with a headset right in the box. Sure, it may not be wireless, but since every 360 owner has a headset, its almost a given that everybody talks in 360 games! With ps3 however, yea, its great that you can use just about any bluetooth headset, but does your ps3 come with one? No! You still need to buy one! And the worst part about it, good bluetooth headsets are not cheap.

You really should look at getting a PS3. I have all 3 consoles (Xblows270, Wii and PS3). I won't compare the Wii to anything, it is in it's own class. But the PS3 is a better built machine. You know when something is just done right? That feeling? Well you can tell the difference in quality of the PS3 vs. Xblows 270. PS3 is way above it. Xblows 270 is just a poor, cheaply made POS, and the failure rate shows it. Oh and mine Xblows 270? Sitting in the closet, bricked by the fall update. THANKS Microshaft! Love you too!

People need to realise both are great. I can take it when people dislike one but what gets me heated up is when they hate it just because its sony or microsoft, or when theres a feature one has and the other dosn't people try to prove you don't need it.
Sony has a bigger problem with the online than most realise. They could easily do something like XBL but they know a lot of their consumers have an xbox 360 AND a PS3, and they also know these consumers are not going to pay for two different things. The PSN is EXCELLENT for free. Resistance appears with no lag.
We'll have to wait a few years down the line to see just what becomes of the PSN, and let microsoft rejustify if £30 is the right price for XBL.

So please don't say the PS3 is a rip-of, because it isn't,its achually really good value. And plus on top of that its a very reliable system.
