BioShock - Image 1There's been quite a fuss over the widescreen features of 2K Games' big FPS BioShock for the PC and the Microsoft Xbox 360. Reports of FOV bugs that involve cutting off top and bottom portions of sights have been noted, driving a lot of users crazy.

The noise has gotten pretty loud to such an extent that 2K Games just had to clear things up. Elizabeth of the 2K team posted an official message on their site explaining their side.

Elizabeth made it clear that they "didnÂ’t save any money or development time by choosing this set of parameters." She added that decisions made by the team were done with the game's best interest in mind. She further explained:

When playing in widescreen modes the game makes use of the full screen resolution, and does not crop or stretch a lower resolution image into a wide screen one. For example, at 720p the game renders natively to the full 1280x720 resolution.

She also discussed the rationale behind some key choices as geared towards pleasing the greater majority of players. "Instead of cropping the FOV for 4:3 displays and making all 4:3 owners mad in doing so, we slightly extended the vertical FOV for standard def mode: we never wanted to have black bars on peopleÂ’s displays," she comments.

For those still unhappy despite this explanation, Elizabeth concluded that they'll be looking into options for allowing users to adjust FOV settings manually. However, she indicated that this may take quite some time to release if they ever decide to come up with a fix.

Hard to do huh?

If fixing the FOV is so damn hard, how come Racer_S did it in a day? Without the source code. Lies and excuses seem to be the norm with money grabbing nowadays. BTW everyone look for the FOV bioshock hack made by Racer_S. The link is on Kotaku.

Talk about a bull***** answer! Does anyone actually buy this? Not a good idea to insult your customer's intelligence.

HAHA, Wait...

So 16:9 ISN'T Cropped, but so 4:3 users don't feel left out, They Extended the Vertical Vision. So in other words, 16:9 IS Cropped compared to the 4:3 resolution.

Who cares...

Okay, while you guys are all *****ing about some stupid FOV issue, I'll go and enjoy probably one of the best games released so far this year. I mean seriously, this doesn't break the game, unless of course you're ultra-anal about these kinds of things. Try playing the game... seriously, you can't even notice this "issue". Hey, did you know that Half-Life 1 had an 80 degree FOV rather than the standard 90? You didn't see people whining about that then...

bs

thats bull*****... since when (in games) do you get to see more picture when playing in 4:3. that was the whole point of widescreen - to extend your FOV. instead, they've done in the opposite way around :S

100%agree

I call BS

Who uses 4:3 TVs anymore with high definition game systems? Less than 5% of HDTVs are 4:3. I think it's pretty stupid to play in 4:3 mode with a wide screen TV just to see the whole picture. This is obviously a mistake and they're covering it up, because nobody in their right mind would want this. Could you imagine how stupid it would be to do this with movies? Still an awesome game though.

ha

It's called 'Next gen' gaming for a reason. There aren't supposed to be stupid things like this popping up. The whole point of playing games in widescreen is to see more. BTW, Bioshock is highly over-rated. Uninspired gameplay, with repetitive looking enemies, an AI that's just simply dumb, and a no death penalty system are just too many negatives. The graphics are good, textures are great, but the gameplay sucks, the difficulty is laughable, and the story(while interesting, since it is SOMETHING different) is far too linear. IMO all the reviewers on this game were smoking way too much crack (tho at least GAMESPOT gave it a 9).

bio-screwed

i bought this game hoping it would be a good experience, and from the demo i was hooked. i had other game choices, but i choose this one hoping that the bug i heard about the day the game was released would be fixed quickly. now it seems that they are making crap up and using flawed logic to justify a mistake on their part. i knew this game was just a money whore, the marketing television commercials showed that. i just cant believe i went with my impulse and bought it. anyone beat the game yet? its less than 8 hours huh?

LMAO noob

What makes you think 99.9% of people who have a PS3 or Xblowx711 have an HDTV? 4:3 will be a standard this generation until 1080p units can be affordable...which I don't see in the near future. pwnt

Re: Spectre

Considering both systems refer to themselves as the next generation of gaming, and offer resolutions for HD gaming, most(if not all games) have a widescreen setting. It's not about having 4:3 as the only option, it's about offering 16:9 to those who wish to get the full experience from their system/game. 2k's 'decision' to have 4:3 zoomed as the 16:9 is obviously a mistake, and it creates a different perception during gameplay. I mean honestly, why would they break away from the normal(accepted) widescreen setting that basically all developers use, to their 'tall-screen' setting?

.

It takes 20 to 25 hours to properly finish the game, and nobody like JEW. huh, I mean you, JEW, your name, you know, yeah...
by - 2007-08-23 17:22:54
LOL

I'm not saying that it should be capped at 4:3 resolution. Although 16:9 is the the only option to get the best experience, MCS is stating that 4:3 should be eliminated totally. I agree that the 4:3 should derive from the 16:9 aspect, but should not be the standard until 4:3 screens are phased out like VHS.
