No more sold BioShocks until the street date - Image 1Over in gamer-land, there are probably a couple of very happy people playing BioShock right now on their Xbox 360s. While this breaking of the street date seems like a big blow to everyone waiting patiently for their copy of the game, it seems 2K Games or its PR company may have had something to do with the unintentional breaking of the street date for BioShock.

Over on 2K Games' forums, one poster by the name of Rapture_Tourist managed to find a statement from Ryan Jones, senior account executive at Access Communications, 2K's PR firm. In the statement, Jones explains the broken street date as partially the result of a wrong advertisement as well as a seemingly inherent problem of shipping early:

It recently came to 2K GamesÂ’ attention that one of our retail partners prematurely sold some copies of BioShock prior to the game's official launch date. Retailers are typically shipped product in advance to ensure they can meet launch day demand on street-dated product. As a result, a few people were able to purchase the game early.

Additionally, a TV advertisement for BioShock prematurely ran that incorrectly indicated that the game was available for purchase. 2K Games has reached out to our retail partners and is maintaining the street date of August 21st in North America and August 24th in Europe, when BioShock will be available at retailers. 2K Games is appreciative of the gamer excitement and critical acclaim leading up to the titleÂ’s launch.

That being said, expect retailers to be a lot less forthcoming about offering BioShock until its actual release date. In the meantime, you can probably try out the (insanely) HARD version of the Xbox 360 demo, or wait for a PC demo to come out.

Toys'R'Us knew damn well they were pre-selling BioShock in order to jump the gun on the other resellers... Why buy the game from somewhere else when Toys'R'Us has it a week early?

When Best Buy pulled this crap in the past, they were fined $50,000 for each copy sold, as per the standard contract.

Also, '2K Games has reached out to our retail partners and is maintaining the street date of August 21st in North America' is incorrect. You can't 'maintain' a date when the game has already flown the coup. Sorry!
