Molyneux: WoW and The Sims saturating PC gaming market |
Ó
Lionhead Studios boss Peter Molyneux expressed his disappoint at the "tragic" state of the PC gaming market right now. He explains that the reason behind this is the two titles currently saturating the casual market.Molyneux's mentions that Blizzard's World of Warcraft and Electronic Arts' The Sims franchise are mostly to blame for the slump in the PC gaming market now. He explains that games on the PC nowadays are almost always associated to these two titles instead of the diverse selection of games the platform has to offer.
This trend shuts out the casual game developers from creating more innovative titles for gamers to enjoy, considering how much both WoW and The Sims have already cornered the market. Games such as Peggle and Diner Dash are no longer given their fair share due to the saturation occurring in the market today.
Here's a direct quote taken from Molyneux during the GDC 2008 event when asked for his opinion on the matter:
In my view, that [gaming innovation] has completely stopped. They're doing the same game over and over again with a different wrapper. It's like a mini-universe in itself which is emulating what's happening in our industry. The second thing is, you've got The Sims and World of Warcraft sucking all the air out of the PC market. It's just incredible.

While I think he makes a pretty good point about people wanting to emulate WoW, going toe to toe, I'm not sure what the Sims has to do with it. I suppose because it has so many expansions making it into other games, it hurts those games that are similar? Well anyway, I don't think you can compare Peggle or Diner Dash to The Sims, WoW, Half Life 2, Gears of War or fill in the blank other top name game. Is it fun? Yeah, but compared to a real game it's just a cell phone game.
