John Carmack: WoW is the train behind PC gaming |
Ó
Carmack called WoW the "train driving all the PC sales numbers altogether on gaming." While the current platforms now sport connectivity and modding features that were once exclusive to the PC, you can't change the fact that WoW has been a phenomenally successful product for the PC.
MMO and casual games in general seem to be the biggest selling point of the platform. Because of this, he still believes the PC still has a strong enough margin to make games despite the number of console players taking up the market.
He was also pleased with the way the PC manufacturers like Intel and AMD have improved over the years when it came to creating enough support for PC games. He related this with his current experience after putting up his new company:
We still mostly run on XP here, weÂ’re still mostly GL, but the APIs and things are pretty much working. 10 years ago, I was having quarterly conferences with Intel and AMD, trying to get all the issues right with the processor. Then eventually, that stuff got fixed, and I didnÂ’t need to talk with them for a long time.
Already, Carmack is putting together several projects such as releasing M-rated games on the Nintendo DS, as well as future plans for the newly formed id Mobile.
