Yankee Group prediction: Wii going downhill, third-parties may leave

There's no doubt regarding the recent success Nintendo has had over the past year with its next-gen console, the Wii. Raking in astounding numbers in 2007, with nearly 6.3 million units sold, Nintendo certainly is having its moment in the sun. However, this raises the question how long the company's good fortune will last.

Aside from the console's sales, software titles have also been pretty strong in terms of sales. While Halo 3 nabbed the title as the best-selling game for 2007, other titles available on the Wii such as Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Fit came in closely behind with its own positive sales numbers.

However, Yankee Group Director Mike Goodman mentions that while the best-selling console has had phenomenal success in the past year, it is most likely to go downhill from here. He was quoted saying: "Yes, the platform is wildly selling, but no one is playing games on it".

He expects that third-party publishers are most likely to soon abandon it in favor of other platforms. Goodman says that the recent price drops in other consoles should entice gamers to move in their direction. He continues on by asking where Nintendo will go once the Wii runs out of steam and sells out the market.

We'll all just have to wait and see if this is indeed where the buck stops for Nintendo. With the company's own positive outlook going into the new year, it's merely a matter of time whether or not Nintendo still has room to grow. For now, Brawl's 40/40 rating from Famitsu is enough to go by with.

well.. almost all awesome titles are Nintendo related. Very few 3rd party dev has great games on Wii but that is totally subject to personal opinion (so you are welcome to disagree). However, I think Nintendo will do just fine even with out any 3rd party dev. They can just keep pumping out Metroid, Kart, Zelda, Brawl, Paper, Party, any Mario series, any sport games deal with Mario chars. Not to mention a few sequels that might come like Luigi Mansion, Kirby etc etc

Your so far up Ninty's A$$ that you can't even seem to realize that no one is playing games on it. Its fact, hell my sisters Wii hasn't even been touched by both of us in like 4 months. And maybe it will when SSBB, but after that its not.

Ninty's games lack so much compared to 460 and PS3 its not even funny. I mean they shouldn't even sell the system as a game console just a Wii fit console. I mean then it would really sell.

Face it your lucky Wii and fad is going down hill and thats fact. And im not a fanboy im telling you the truth. The Wii has nothing on it worth playing after SSBB, and im a huge Nintendo fan, had the SNES and NES since it came out. Even i know this.

Grow up and understand facts, it will help you in school too.

LOL wow Some come back demondirk, im not a fanboy of any console im a consumer but i tell facts. The Wii has nothing going for it after SSBB.

Who cares if your engaged that has nothing to do with this topic. I will also have all three systems soon, Well if you count me playing my sisters when she working at her job. Listen i don't support Sony, MS or Ninty, im a consumer and i play what i like from any console but im not stupid either. I see nothing from Ninty thats worth playing after SSBB. And not the mention all these delays on SSBB I will LMAO if that game turns out to be a horrific game.

Stealth i dont like Bign bashin as much as dirk but at least you dont CONSISTENLY!! attack ninetndo mercilessly like MCS that pisses me off alot....but wtf NO support SSBB is the game of all games ive never been more excited for one EVER!!!! And you remember that E3 thing? Huh? Yeah

Its a safe bet that nintendo will unveil new games what is currently planned is all coming out before then....but well see personaly i think Animal Crossing Wii will debut!
