Xbox 360, Wii fall to Asian piracy, PS3 resisting |
Ó
We got a tip from one of our friends in Southeast Asia that gave us an idea of how the darker side of the console war is being waged there. It currently looks to be a square-off between the Nintendo Wii and the Microsoft Xbox 360 in the pirate market.According to our source, modded Xbox 360 consoles have been available in the Philippines for some six months now, which was followed by the Wii whose modded versions started shipping barely two months ago in the country. Amazingly, the Wii is slightly more expensive than Microsoft's game machine. This may be attributed to the short supply of the console in the global market.
Our source says that a basic modded Wii package that includes the console and five pirated games of the buyer's choice sells at an average price of about 20,000 pesos depending on the customer's bargaining skills. That's roughly US$ 400, which is significantly pricier than the un-modded ones that we have in the U.S.
If you're really into the machine, you can shell out 22,000 pesos, or about US$ 440 to get the fully loaded package. It includes all the accessories and 20 bootlegged games of your choice.
The Xbox 360 is a little closer in terms of its legitimate price point stacked up with the modded one. The basic package, which is very similar to what you get with the Core model here, sells for 19,000 pesos (US$ 402) and comes with just one controller and five pirated games. If you want the total package, you can get the one that sells for 23,000 pesos (US$ 486) where the dealer will gladly give you the unit, two controllers, headsets, 20 games of your choice, a 20GB hard drive, and a dandy cooling fan. The tipster said the pirates are working on a system that will allow owners of bootlegged games to access Xbox Live.
More frighteningly, our tipster says some of the dealers of the pirated gear are speculating on establishing a private server that can host a "pirate's mini-Xbox Live environment." The idea may seem a bit ambitious, but similar things have happened before. Hobbyists have been able to establish private servers which host Asian MMORPGs so that users won't have to pay for prepaid subscriptions. Games for both the Xbox 360 and the Wii cost 280 pesos (US$ 5.92) a piece.
Our asset tells us that next-gen consoles are pretty new in his country and prices are still "relatively high." He says everyone expects the listed prices to drop by some 30 to 40 percent after a year. The same goes for bootlegged games. Thanks to Merc for the info.

This may actually help MS overall....as they are no longer losing money on the 360.
So, "asians" may choose 360 over PS3 just for the fact that they can pirate their games....MS still wins as it gets higher sales numbers, and still makes SOME money....then they can hope that they still buy some XBLA games n such....
arent they called "backups"?
I go to asia all the time to buy "backups" of games. i totally support backup games!
they are loosing cash not gaining it you dumbass.. think about it, microsoft makes royalty funds off of the videgames being licensed for their console... once a person gets a modded 360 they have access to pirated games (burnt DVD 9 ISO's) meaning they need not buy a game that will benefit microsofts interest for the rest of the consoles life span. these games cost millions to make, if their easily found on the black market then microsoft will loose BIG TIME!!. The game publishers will not make games for a console if they know they will lose allot of cash due to pirating. It would be a financial suicide. XBLA may make some cash, yet its nothing in comparison to how much an exclusive like gears of war, or halo 3 will rake in for them. Not to mention that their are game developing companies with their eyes on videogame news for things like this. Finding out that you may potentially drive your company to bankruptcy by placing your product on a "pirate aware" console is a huge reason to think twice and instead work on the "longterm safe" competitor('s). the same holds true with the wii. If they can pirate full blown disk distrubuted games what makes you think small projects like the content found on the XBLA cant easily be emulated and disrubuted by other means (a DVD with 50 XBLA games? not so difficult to do...) It looks like David Jaffe was right when he said the Blueray makes the system cost heavy but sony knows why they do things...
Since the majority of money is made by selling games , microsoft will only make a very small amount of cash with the console .
Forget about people buying the real games over there ... its pirates dreamland .
The guy at the philippines airport was interested by my baggage only because it was the first time that he had ever seen an original region 1 movie with only one movie per dvd ( They usually have 10 movies on a dvd...so the movies are really Really compressed with low quality )!
for making a crappy slap-it-on-spare-parts of a console.
now owning a PS3 feels more elite than ever... they can break Blu Ray in the future but mass producing Blu Ray games (technically and economically) will be loads harder than dvds...
i got one of does i got the xbox 360 and i put pirate games in it
I don't know how they pirate stuff (like if they factory produce it or just get multiple burners), but with BluRay, it's going to be expensive and it's an unfamiliar format. So I guess that's a smart move on Sony's part.
They can probably figure out how to hack the PS3 in no time to get PS1 and PS2 backups, but there's no real point in that.
Hong Kong PS3 pirates are going to be busy for a while.
I agree. Most Asian countries (with the exception of Japan) are heavy in piracy. You can't force someone who doesn't want to purchase software to buy it. They just wont pay. They'll just stick to with their hacked PS2 or Xbox 1.
Downloadable content is a great source of revenue for publishers and when reasonable priced no one has a problem with buying it. This is still a very well protected area on all platforms.
Also, considering the 360 has the highest game and add-on attach rate of any console this stage in it's life cycle I don't think piracy is having a major impact on the platform.
The PS3 is lucky it hasn't been hacked yet. Sony is losing big money on each console and they need to keep the security as tight as possible until it's returning a profit on each unit like the Wii and 360 is.
i live in asia ....... its very difficult to find originals for sale
and the backups or copies are virtualy identical to the originals... i have a collection on 260 ps2 games all with box and cd/dvd art to match the original minus the manuals...
i have a 360 system as well and more then 30 games now..
i never pay more then 3 dollors a game unless its rare and hard to find like zone of enders 2 or ninja gaiden black.... but i also own a fair amount of originals too but only games i trully like .... ryu gagatoku 1 and 2 from sega and blue dragon jp...
in asia the ps3 is just too much money and there are no good games available at all.... my friend sold me his 360 to get a ps3 and he is not happy....
as there are a lot of problems with the xbox 360 but in asia you can get the fans modified which increas the noise but your system will never over heat and you will have little to no trouble with the red lights of death... but in the case of the ps3 there is no support in asia and when it breaks you are screwed .... no money back no exchange..... i know i was one of them.... so sony can kiss my !*@........
the reason the PS3 hasnt been hacked yet is because, Like the PSP, its gonna be Hacked software and Firmware that will allow u to play games off of the Hard drive, not burned Games.
the Xbox 360 and the Wii's mods are to trick the dvd drive into thinking that its playing a Legit Disc. and since games fit on regular dvds that is fine
the different approach to the PS3 is why its taking so long... dont worry, 6 months untill ps3 will hacked too... most likely less.
Why use Blu-Ray when you can load games from the hard drive? I'm use thats what hackers will do.
$ony is f*cked if their security would be cracked! At least MS makes a little on each console sold, but piracy still definately isn't helping them! It's just pissing off the developers and MS loses business. This might be an issue, but since the POS3 is doing so terribly it's not much of a threat.
What about future games that will be between 25 + 50 gigabytes? You would need a terabyte hard drive to make it semi worth it.
mr. devise i agree with you there...
but piracy does more harm cause of the mass market and how it is distributed... the mass market buys disc (how do i know?) cause i grew up in the philippines... spent 3 years in indonesia.. and 6 months in china...
hackers can tinker all they want with the hardware but unless they can find a way to massively distribute it to the common public in a mode that they understand then it's not as much of a threat that what piracy could really be...
and as for agreeing that piracy is actually good for the XBox??? you guys are getting more stupid than ever.
That photo... that place .... it´s not Asia... :)
More like South America... get a clue!
The reason the Wii is so much more expensive is because it requires a hardware modification, whereas the 360 merely needs a firmware flashed.
that "shatterdome your an idiot!" guy up there made a good point...
aside from the obvious problems piracy causes he pointed this out mr. devise... and i quote:
"these games cost millions to make, if their easily found on the black market then microsoft will loose BIG TIME!!. The game publishers will not make games for a console if they know they will lose allot of cash due to pirating. It would be a financial suicide. XBLA may make some cash, yet its nothing in comparison to how much an exclusive like gears of war, or halo 3 will rake in for them. Finding out that you may potentially drive your company to bankruptcy by placing your product on a "pirate aware" console is a huge reason to think twice and instead work on the "longterm safe" competitor('s). the same holds true with the wii."
read the article you fool... think they use 'pesos' in china?
as i guess you're too stupid to know, they don't.
ok if the "Back Ups" do great all the place like US and ect... tha mean 360 can win the console war that why PS2 sold a lot...
Yes, thank god MS and their HD-DVD add-on is doing so well these days. I have it all planned out... if you're interested in my strategy check out my earlier post near the bottom of the comments following this link, it's foolproof.. LOL!
http://ps3.qj.net/index.php?+pg+49+aid+91583
i was in the philippines last month. i was surprised that they already had wii-mods. even the 360 mods. problem is that not many people in philippines like american products like the 360. i even saw someone(who looked rich) buy a ps3 there. because in philippines, sony is like a mercedes, wii(and PS2) are like toyotas, and xbox is like a ford(which in philippines is basically non-existent) if you get what i mean. a lot of people there like brand name basically.
you're an idiot dude
you don't buy backups, you make them
Its the 360 stooges. You guys need to do something productive instead of bashing the ps3. If you dont like it fine, but people worked hard to create that and it is a good piece of hardware. The ps3 is hardly doing terribly. Ps2 started similarly and ended up crushing everything and continues to do so. Besides 360 had a weaker launch. Im not knocking the 360 or wii, but cut the ps3 and its owners some slack. We are all united in the fact that we are all gamers.
yea we filipinos like our Sony brand... it's a fact
and in the Philippines they care alot about how they are perceived by others.
wearing guess jeans or fossil watches might just be common in other cultures but in the philippines it's a big deal...
and sony is a big deal... and the higher the price is the more people want it... not the other way around where the higher the price is the more people get turned off... so with the price the PS3 has and the feeling of exclusivity and being elite... the PS3 is one of the hottest-thing-to-own right there right now... people are just deciding for the best way to get one.
although i haven't visited since two years ago.
i can buy PS2 games here for a dollar, the newer ones for maybe $2 but it never goes beyond that.
i know x360 pirated games can be played online here - and it was only recently when they were able to hack it (online thingy)
PSPs, hmmm dont tell me - you dont use custom firmwares in the US
the currency is pesos...
it looks like south america...
OMG ITS MEXICO!!!!
I appreciate the fact that some of you may not have English as your first language but its pretty damned hard to understand what you mean sometimes...
case in point:
"ok if the "Back Ups" do great all the place like US and ect... tha mean 360 can win the console war that why PS2 sold a lot... "
Whats your point?
I come from a Southeast Asian country originally. I know about all the piracy that goes on. It is much harder to buy genuine games and what games they release, are usually very outdated (I don't think there has been an Asian release of MGS3 Snake Eater) I guess its a vicious cycle really... Asians pirate, companies don't release things for the, and they pirate to get said things, and it goes on and on...
I live in the philippines and it is true that the wii is more expensive than the 360. Bootlegged games are also very rampant nowadays especially on the 360. I was disappointed at the price of the ps3 going to a whopping 55,000 pesos or US $1,100. The cheapest that I saw was 40,000 pesos or US $800 for a 60gb unit but the original games mostly costs you 3,000-4,000 pesos or $60-$80 US dollars.
MS wins, Asians and wins... but softhouses losts...
buy it online... no region lock for games too so buy them online as well.
what? pesos in philippines?
as far as I know pesos is a latin american currency, used in colombia, mexico, and argentina...
not asian countries!
It's nothing new. You can strip out audio and foreign language files and compression and so forth. The PSP has games up to 1.6GB (maybe bigger?) and only recently have 4GB and 8GB drives become affordable. Yet it's piracy rate is extremely high.
that is the currency... the Philippine Peso.
it has been the currency since the spanish people colonized the country way way way way way back (same reason why it is also predominantly Catholic unlike other Asian countries.)
I meant to say 4GB and 8GB memory cards instead of drives.
Plus there is hardly any games going over 10GB on the PS3 currently. The average game size is between 6gb to 12GB, and that will continue for atleast the next year. Compression of those 1080P FMV will reduce a lot of size on future bloated releases.
microsoft will figure out a way to stop this, anways there is always a way to get around hack protection...
they've got to find a find to get it to the mass market... so they've got to break Blu Ray first to mass produce (which is economically and technically harder the dvd)... that's were piracy hurts you... with distribution.
that's how piracy works... thru this that's how suppliers make money... if not then it won't be a profitable venture for pirates...
piracy hurts an industry not by occassional people making illegal downloads here and there... occassionally doing their own burning here and there...
piracy kills you thru the suppliers who mass produce and takes it to their distibution channels... that is their business... that's where they make millions... and that's what takes millions away from legit copanies...
so as i said... break Blu Ray first and they must find a way to make it worth their while afterwards... to make it profitable enough.
when i went to the philippines, all my cousins were like, wow, you have real games (PS2) lol, and all the bootleg games and movies are sold at the mall, the streets, everywhere gamers are, ahh reminds me of good times...
You would be hard pressed to find someone selling pirated copies in Western countries. The jail term in the US is something crazy like up to 10 years jail.
I think the Xbox 1 got used for pirating so much more. Mainly because you can load any game disc onto the hard drive and take it back to the store you bought it for to get a full refund. And anyone can do that! I was just saying that don't think that Blu-Ray is going to stop pirating. There is already a lot of sites sharing PS3 dumps even though a hack hasn't been released yet. 90% of dumps are smaller than a dual layer DVD anyway.
It took quite a long time before we saw a hack on the 360 and I expect a PS3 hack will pop up within the next 6 months.
http://ps3.qj.net/index.php?+pg+49+aid+91583
1. This article has got Asia written all over it.
2. Blu Ray will not stop piracy but that's what pirates needs to tap to make profit on the PS3 and not the hard drive argument you mentioned.
3. I agree with you on your 6 month projection.
i do wish they got the same laws as let's say America or Australia when it comes to piracy and i do wish they could implement it properly but that's just false hope... 10 years you say??? serves them right.
and for those gamers who keeps on bragging "oh i got this game for a dollar.. or i bought like 30 games and only spent this and that..." guys, it's nothing to be proud of so hold on to your thoughts ok??? you take pride in claiming that you guys are "gamers" when in fact you are helping poison the industry.
microsoft or sony cant stop it because just when they think they ...someone out there will do it again and do it better.....
piracy is here to stay untill they can ship world wide no region locked affordable games that are good...
it sucks that i cannot play for instence yakuza 2 in america but in japan i can... @(@ like this is what gets people to pirate games....
and what was sony thinking when they put a 500-600usd price tag on a console.... does anybody remember neo geo...... it lasted but was never popular and all the games were ported to the sega saturn or computer.........
asians arent rich thats why copies thrive.. and always will untill someone decides to look at a world wide approach.... sony got the no region lock part but failed so misurably in the price department........
microsoft and nintendo will do good to adjust they software price to better match the asian economy and i dont mean china or korea.....3 original games is the price of some peoples full salaries in asia.. i mean many........
and now microsoft and sony are looking to release in africa and the middle east..... trust me ... it will thrive there too....
they need to change there marketing stratagy and the approach to software price depending on the region it is being sold and they also need to consider that not everyone who loves games is rich.... and full of money
in philippines, 1 US dollar + about 48 pesos
i got god of war 2 for 150 pesos. i also got ace combat belkan war for 80 pesos.
so thats less than 3 dollars, and also about 1.35 .
so i got 2 games, worth $100... for less than 5 bucks.
Done the whole modding thing with the 360, bricked after the update.Besides it really got boring not playing online.Developers loose out big if you games can be pirated so easily that no one would purchase a ginuwine copy.Like the guy said it would cost alot more money if you want to pirate on the ps3 and there's probaly a chance it wont work. Can't wait for the backup of Halo 3 to release.Guess the whole decision for using blu-ray wasn't such a bad decision after all.I wonder what David Jaffe would say about it now.
If you exclude Japan from the Asian market there is hardly anything left. If the 360 wasn't hacked, do you think they would be selling many consoles and games in the Philippines? Hardly.
As I said before 90% of PS3 games are within dual layer dvd size. Blu-Ray might not be required for most games. I seem to remember with the PS2 CD sized games were the first to get hacked.
Microsoft LOSES money on hardware sales. Do you guys read at all? That's why they're going crazy trying to keep up with piracy. Their main source of income is licensing fees from games and Xbox Live. Take those away and they're doing this for free.
So it's not a boon to the 360 to be pirated, it's a boon when folks actually buy games and play on Live.
It's not brain surgery!
that's nice... worldwide approach to pricing...
piracy is an industry in itself... it is someone's business... someone's job... it is an industry...
you cal sell ur original game for any price you want the pirates will still beat you to it.
these are highpriced consoles and games cause these are for people who can afford these highpriced consoles and games...
they didn't the 360/PS3 (technological marvels in gaming) with the third world demographic in mind. they made it with the normal profile of a gamer in mind and we all know who those are. and believe me these are priced with profit in mind hitting the target market in mind...
they released it to countries like the phils for those who want one and those who can afford. it is not for the mass market of the third world. that is why owning one is considered a luxury...
by saying stuff like that.
before i came to Australia i resisded in the philippines... i bought a PS2 with my own hard earned money and it is in no way modified... i bought original games from stores paying them retail prices... i workd a normal desk job then like everybody else...
so it is possible to enjoy these games if you want to... nobody has to adjust the industry to hand you something you want (far from something you need)... i now work in australia but when i bought my ps3 i still saved up for it before launch... same thing if i am still living in the philippines and i wanted one... i'll save up for it.
Jay, if "piracy is here to stay untill they can ship world wide no region locked affordable games that are good..." as you say it, there isn't going to be an end in sight. Sony's already helped us a ton by allowing us to play Region Free games... Sure, they're not affordable but thats what piracy does... drives up the price for the legit consumer. So you have YOURSELF to thank for the lack of "affordable" games...
The thing is, the companies already have reduced price Asian versions of games out in each region, hell the consoles are even cheaper in Asia than the US. Yet all pirates do is throw it all in their face. I don't like your naive idea of having a "world wide approach"... thats like saying, we can't stop crime until we have a world wide approach where people can take what they want from other people without repercussion...
Put simply, YOU don't deserve a 360... neither do most of the pirates out there. Simple as that. If you can't afford the petrol for your Ferrari, don't buy the Ferrari...
Totally agree with u... The reason why its priced so high is because there isnt' even supposed to be PS3s in the Philippines in the first place... They weren't released there, and hence the importers can sell the PS3s for whatever price gives them a profit... (since we dont' expect them to run a charity)
Its a cat and mouse game really... There is also ALWAYS a way to break said protection...
piracy actually improves the sales of consoles.. let's say piracy is available on the PS3, retailers will be able to have copies of every game on the bluray discs.. then we consumers will be tempted to buy a PS3, so we can play those cheap games.. PS3 and blu ray sales will go up once it happens.. and yup, sony will win... well.. i'm saying in the case of sony, if this happens to the 360 too, who knows man.. ppl will just buy the console that has the games that they want... and whoever wins, who cares.. coz we'll be playing the games and having fun.. haha.. well.. it's all IMO.. i could be wrong..
this news is troubling!
yes modded xbox 360, wii and ps2 run rampant on philippines but they are NOT made in there, ALL UNITS COMES FROM CHINA, HONG KONG, some from taiwan + south korea. or if ever they are modded in the philippines the MODCHIPS are manufactured from the CHINA and such. even the technology to mod it comes from CHINA etc. btw the ps1 and ps2 succeded in asian because of modchip its the truth. GC and original XB could also have succeded but the PS2 has more Titles. yes the xbox 360 may rule philippine console sccene for now due to its rich library but if the ps3 becomes modded philippine people still love sony playstation brand.
the one you met are part of those stupid corrupt goverment officials hens corrupt people. yes those multiple movies in 1 dvd are so crappy.
anyways, real official games still sell in the philippines but not too much and even if there are no modded consoles original games will still not sell due to its price of 10-15x the price of a burned copy. but there is 1 thing PROVEN in the philippines the millions of ps1 and ps2 modded consoles sold did hurt in any ways but instead helped in the success on those 2 sony consoles.
I live in Bangladesh. Another Asian country. All the cd dvd we find here is pirated. U cant buy a original even if u want. But all my gamer friends are buying PS3s. Althought xbox 360 is available. Hopefully a mod for ps3 will be out soon too.
in the philippines during the SEGA and NINTENDO 8-16bit era,
philippine gamers enjoys luxury gaming by ARCADE and yes saving money to buy SNES/SuperFamicom/NES/Megadrive/Genesis/GB etc. we buy original stuff on inflated prices, way higher than US/Jap price so that these dealers earn profit. by then we buy original games, temporary trade with friends just to play something new because we cannot afford many games but we got by that way. piracy is already in there with pirated cartridge but price is just a little lower than originals so we shell out a little and buy the original instead. but when ps1 came out, backup copies cost just a third of the original ones and yes they taught us how to swap disc on ps1 while it is spinning, its kinda bad but many people chose it because they can buy 3 diff games instead of 1 original game. then after a year or so modchips came out, can only play games by the units region jap games for jap modded unit, us games for us modded unit. these modded units all came from hong kong. since modded units became popular the game copies sell more hence price drop getting 6 games versus 1 original, double or multiple disc game price is also multiplied by the number of disc hence FF7 will cost you pirated disc price times 3.
but since there is no market for any console here in the philippines, piracy here doesnt hurt sony nintendo or microsoft, instead helps those companies sell millions of consoles because we still buy consoles at FULL retail price.
software makers are just a little hurt because they are not really supposed to sell in the philippines, its not theyre intended audience after all, but we from the philippines wants to experience the wonderful world of games.
"Backups" are played the same way on the PSP. Nobody can buy UMD burners.
I live in the Philippines and I buy original games at Data Blitz (local chain that sells originals in the Philippines).
(Note: I'm middle class citizen yet I can actually buy the original ones. People here are just really lazy.)
I'm really ashamed of my fellow Filipinos.
You see. Everything in this hell of a country can be faked. From books, medicines and food as well as crimes. Heck, even citizenship, driver's license and believe it or not, election candidates, celebrity scandals and money given as vote buying can be faked...and I'm not joking at that.
People here are really immorals despite being one of the only Catholic country in Asia. Cheating always occurs during elections and the latest Nursing Board Exam scandal proved most of my fellow Filipinos don't have conscience.

Why Does everyone feel they have to type the longest paragraph to make their point.
yes i understood everything you said...
i may just be half Filipino...
but i am more Filipino than you are.
and we are ashamed of you.
only a person without proper breeding would speak those things... the people who sleep on the streets with not an ounce of education in them has got more manners than you.
to the rest... don't mind this guy... seems to be just another kid with bad manners.
i lived in the Philippines for 18 years... in the US for 2 years of schooling... visited countries in Europe and Asia... and now reside in Australia and been here for 3 years... Filipinos are as good a race as others and in some ways even better... If anyone here has a Filipino friend you would know what i'm talking about.
If you don't like the country ur at right now and hate the people you share it with... then by all means just kill yourself.
i own ps2, ps3, xbox 360 , game cube, sega saturn, neo geo aes, psp and super famicom...
about 40% of my collection are original...
the rest is i got from my The Mall and they are not..
everything was paid for and i have the reciets to prove most of my purcheses..
back home in the states i own a neo geo arcade unit with over 10 games
i have over 400 games that i have collected since i was 12
i dont have a computer for coping games... nore do i want to dish out 40 for a generic game... in the states you have block buster in asia we china towns black market of everything ( this includes 90% OF ALL LAGIT STORES AND MALLS)
this is what drives up the cost of our games. devs have to make up the difference with all these F-ing pirates out there.
not everyone can afford 40 bucks for a game. I'd rather spend 40 on a 100 pack of DVD-Rs, and pay 10 bucks for gamefly then do my magic.
Not to mention 60 bucks for the next-gen games, I love my ps3 and know its a good investment, but I was pissed when I bought FEAR, game sucked rectal juice and spent 60 bucks on it.
When theres a way to play ps3 games off the HDD, I'm definately going for it.
Some games are exceptions like Metal Gear 4.

Ronald Regan anyone??
the article sounds like something from a tabloid magazine. piracy in the philippines is not something thats so underground. in fact you can go to some malls and there will be shops there selling the modified consoles and bootleg games. unlike here in north america where they put up makeshift booths in street corners and run when police arrive. its very out in the open there
The psp is rampant with piracy. But there are still alot of people who don't steal the games. I don't think that the 360 will be nearly as pirated as the psp for the fact that it is a pain in the ass to mod the 360 and it voids the warranty. Most people don't bother and don't care b/c they buy like 3 games a year (not including us hardcore players) and don't really need to buff the games b/c its within their budget.
I live in the Philippines and proud to be a filipino. ts true that piracy is rampant here. But not everyone supports piracy. I also buy games in Datablitz and they usually charge 500 pesos (10 US$) more than the original price of the games. We also have a lot of online communities that feature trading of used games so we usually get original games cheaper as well.
Here are my games by the way...

You pay the DEALER for whatever price he is asking for. Doesn't mean that the company makes money from console sales. It usually costs more for the company to make the console, and then they sell it at a "subsidised" price, so that you will end up buying the software for the console which is where the money comes in. If the company sells 1 console for a loss of $100 (I'm speculating here), selling 10 consoles means a loss of $1000... On top of that, all you're doing is making those importing scalpers rich... If you want games that bad, import them yourself. Cut out the middle-man... Its things like this that make software companies wary about releasing their games to your market... You're only making it harder for yourself in the long run.
The funny thing about there "pirates" is that essentially they are ripping off the Scene as well... All they do is grab a scene release and mass produce it. Therefore, asking the dealer about what's coming in terms of future piracy is moot... yeah, like the "pirates" (workers in some factory in China printing DVDs by the millions) would know how to crack Xbox Live...
Yeah, and all those pirates ***** about how it costs too much to buy genuine games... Selfish bastards... Not only are they hiking the price up for themselves but for the rest of us as well...
the author of this article is totally gay... just as this website is... *****ers!
Z7, your an idiot.
I agree with Quixand. You're an absolute fool. Every nationality has an up or down. Belittling a nationality is bad enough. doing it against your own is a big big low in your personality. If you really think of your own people like that, then just pack your bags and migrate somewhere else.
I'd really love to see if you're as brave as you seem to be. Say that straight-faced to all Filipinos and not behind the KB/mouse. And you call yourself Real Pinoy? Shame on you.
I'd buy my ps3 in the the USA if it wasnt for the bluray movie region encoding ><
With the current dollar - euro currency rate id save tons of money
And ofcourse I wouldn't be able to play my original PSX and PS2 games because, for some ***** reason unknown to most of mankind, sony still continues their region coding...
And for people saying this is a hardware thing and cant be removed... it is not, its a software check of a certain file.
Why else would I be able to play USA region backups on my Euro unmodded ps2 ?
(independence exploit)
You have the nerve to say I'm a moron when you yourself don't live here anymore.
If I am a moron, what more are you?
I'm just saying the TRUTH. The TRUTH hurts doesn't it. If not downplaying the Filipino race. I'm just saying that most people here don't have a conscience by supporting piracy. I am against against piracy. And that message was for those Filipinos who steal by supporting piracy. You're playing blind if you say that it isn't true.
I find it funny that in my barkada, I'm the only one who never botted in Ragnarok Online. I'm also the only one who never modded my PS2. My videogame collection is 100% original. I buy original VCD's and OPM CD's to support the Philippine music industry while some people I know just burn their CD's at computer shops. In my classroom, many classmates cheat during the exam. I myself has NEVER CHEAT.
If you have a conscience, you won't steal by not supporting PIRACY.
Clearly he was being sarcastic.
Some interesting comments here, really its down to a security, My harddrive crashes, I lose my saves, your harddrive crashes you lose your games
If games are made on dual layer blu-ray discs I'm going to kill someone. In any case I'm going to call sony stupid here because you said they were smart.(I'm neutral untill you attack?) They're idiots For putting 256MB OF F$@*#($@# RAM IN THERE AND 3.2GHz CELL PROCESSOR WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!... ok -end of rampage. As for piracy, 16GB for Resistance fall of Man, go for it.
i got a cough modded cough xbox 360 and i have asked microsoft if people can have it and they said yes but it will void you'r garuntee but controller and other things are not void and then he even told me that it is possible to get my xbox unlocked region so i can play the games that i want to from anyhere in the world but i still need to find a shop
....at least wont happen in south east asia. The blu-ray disc itself have to be hack and they will need to find a way to sell it cheap to people. Not to mention the price for the console. If they fail modding a PS3 it will cost them a bomb.
I used to lived in Malaysia its no suprise to me about the piracy but the scale does suprise me a bit. Didn't know tht 360 can be so easily pirated
Considering the fact that you DIDN'T know that the 360 was hacked wide open via a simple firmware upgrade (well more like modification) leaves you in no position to comment on the possibility of hacking the PS3... For all we know it could be like the PSP, running of an ISO loader, who needs UMDs when you just use ISOs? Never say never, otherwise you may end up eating your words.
This photo is not from Asia is from South America
I know because I'm brazilian
45% of all stats are made up one the spot....
China's like heaven for pirated stuff...they even have their own fake disneyland for cryin' out loud...

Its easy to back up games, you can find out how to do it here..

Where can I buy bootleg games? Website?, Do you need a mod chip installed for it to work? How does OXM make games for the xbox, there has to be a way to do it without a mod chip
...copies and emulators are the result. If you can mod one thing and copy 500 of them, that's 500 cheated items out of Microsoft's hands.
So... Why is it scary that piracy happens exactly? This is good for the consumer.
ps3 isnt resisting, in INDIA there a place named palika bazaar aka piracy hub, ps3 pirated blu rays already there for about 500rs each, thats like, 10us$ and except one or two, every game is available and working, i brought motorstorm yesterday, online play isnt working but rest game 100% working.
"piracy is here to stay untill they can ship world wide no region locked affordable games that are good"
the secret to piracy has just been discovered!
the world is shocked!
maybe the damn companies will listen to this.
their catholic why that country is so bad
umalis ka na ng pinas kung galit ka sa mga pinoy.... GAGO!!!!!!!
sigurado akong ayaw ka din ng PILILIPAS....
How can this help microsoft and nitendo?? Companies dont make money on bootlegs they actually lose retards. This is actually helpign the ps3/sony if companies made money on bootlegs than they wouldn't be copy righted laws or people getting sued by companies for pirating. HA for u 360 ownser sad for u wii owners.
This is real bad for microsoft yes they might make money on modded xbox360 half half because a modded 360 is still bootleg= no profit for microsoft the games in asia will not make any money due to pirating = 0 profit for microsoft now microsoft xbox runs on hd dvd which means if this pirates start pirating dvds xbox and hd now lose more money meaning theres a possability that since the ps3 isn't modded or there games cant be pirated most companies and movie formats will move onto blu-ray to earn what they lost in hd dvds so in a way u microsoft fan boys better via by e-mail send microsoft this link so they can stop the pirating because this indeed is not helping the 360 or wii
