Will Wright confirms Wii Spore: Wii is the only next-gen system |

So. Will Wright finally confirmed the existence of Spore on the Nintendo Wii. But what about versions for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3? The other day, Will Wright was interviewed by Guardian Unlimited, and it was then revealed that they, to quote the BAFTA Fellowship inductee, "doing Spore on the Wii."Today, we'll put that statement into the context in which it was actually said. Just in case you guys missed the whole interview, a certain segment has the father of all things Simlish talk about next generation consoles:
Somebody asked me what I thought next generation meant and what about the PlayStation 3 was next generation. The only next gen system I've seen is the Wii - the PS3 and the Xbox 360 feel like better versions of the last, but pretty much the same game with incremental improvement. But the Wii feels like a major jump %u2013 not that the graphics are more powerful, but that it hits a completely different demographic. In some sense I see the Wii as the most significant thing that's happened, at least on the console side, in quite a while.
Pretty bold statements, true. But everyone's entitled to their own opinion. Moving on though, it turns out that Will Wright's got a different kind of home entertainment console set up (or lack thereof) at home. "We've got an Xbox 360 collecting dust in the background, a Wii hooked up that we use quite a bit. I don't have a PS3. I still, for the most part, prefer playing games on the computer - to me the mouse is the best input device ever." He then continues with:
Every generation it's like "the PC's dead! The PC's dead!". But it carries on growing when consoles are flat for five years. At the moment I can get better graphics on my PC than I can on the PS3.
We're doing Spore on the Wii, and we did MySims. It takes significant re-thinking to work out how you're going to do it. PS3 and Xbox 360 are similar enough that you can basically use the same system for both. So it comes down to what the interesting major platforms are and which markets we want to hit.
Again, these are just his personal thoughts on the matter. He seems pretty candid about it too. Despite this, everyone's still hoping that Spore would eventually make it across all platforms. After all, Spore has already been considered a franchise by Maxis Executive Patrick Buechener. Right now, there are the PC, DS, and mobile versions of Spore being readied for a Spring release. Only time will tell if other next-gen consoles get spored over.

Only one or two versions will actually be Spore of course. The rest will be bizarre twists on the name that are actually nothing like the player was expecting when they plonked their money down on the counter.
As to Will Wright's claim that the Wii is the only next gen system....well, the 360 and PS3 are next gen by definition of the power they have, to do things never possible on last gen consoles. The Wii console itself isn't next gen but the ideas promoted by the controller are...or would be if anyone were actually thinking of ways to use it. Having said that, does the notion that a controller could be used in innovative ways make the console it connects to, next gen?
It's all down to how a person defines "next gen". Naughty Will Wright!

Now maybe if he'd stop playing those Wii games over and over and actually finish Spore, (I think waiting 3+ years for this game is already ridiculous) maybe he can make a "next gen" version of The Sims where the people will make double the expressions they already make! (20 facial animations? No way! Sims 3 is a must have!)

next-gen is just that, the next generation in game consoles....there doesn't have to be anything revolutionary to classify it as next gen....
SNES was the "next-gen" console from the NES....what did it offer ? a few more buttons, a more ergonomic controller....and better graphics......yet it was still next gen....
People have to get off this next-gen bandwagon.......the TRUE next-gen in gaming will not happen untill we have virtual reality in our homes....

This also tells me that Spore is meant to be a kids game (or something for the little girls out there)...or maybe they're just afraid of the 360 and PS3?

One last thing...I'm not a casual gamer and I don't have casual gamers over...well my little cousin comes over but he just wants to play GTA all of the time (he can't wait for Manhunt 2)

First, to beat a PS3, you would need at least 1000 dollar computer to do this, how much does a PS3 cost? around 479.99 for a 60GB, or better yet, 399.99 for a 40GB coming soon in beginning of November. Now now, a graphics card can cost as much as a PS3, I dare say, 90% of the PC gaming population right now at the moment does not own a computer that beats the PS3 in graphics. Mine does, but I am in the minority here. Honestly, I don't think Crysis level graphics are impossible on the PS3, so PC graphics aren't really quantum light years ahead of the PS3. So his points are invalid. PS3 is no where near maxed out...
