Will the Wii's success benefit the Xbox 360 and PS3?

Console war - Image 1There was this short but interesting article posted by Wiigo which discussed the subject of whether or not the phenomenal market success of the Nintendo Wii could actually prove to be a synergy for its high-end rivals the Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3. Here's the idea in a nutshell:

We all know that the Wii's mass appeal expanded the market by breaking age barriers open, letting the more casual crowd in the gaming scene with simple games with fun controls. What the article by Wiigo brings up is the question of whether or not this new demographic of gamers will actually find themselves wanting more and becoming hardcore gamers themselves.

It's a really good concept that no study we know of has really delved into. It's not impossible when you really think about it. A lot of gamers started with Mario from back in the day and evolved eventually into the voracious core crowd of today.

However, Wiigo questions the market impact of that very same idea in the long run. They write that while conversion will happen, there will not be as many as to impact market shares in a major way. After all, by the time the casual crowd gets an Xbox 360 or a PS3, they probably would have owned a Wii long before. Wiigo concludes it by saying "the pie is only getting bigger for Nintendo." What do you think?

» no

there was an article posted here before about nintendo saturating the market with non gamers, which in turn would drive devs away from making less hardcore games and toward making cheap "non-games" and that is what is going to happen. If Sony or MS dont beat the Wii soon, the game industry is gonna go south, less RPGs, less (decent) FPS, more puzzle games, more minigame games, more sports games, and more gimmiks.

» well,

i could have told you that...its like drugs (but without the side affects) pot goes to coke, beer goes to smoking, ect.

lol so the wii is a "gateway console"...and for them switching to a ps3 or 360....that depends on the user lol

» it can be hard to tell

it's going to be sad if cool games like GTAIV, lair, drakes fortune, halo 3, and killzone 2, are outsold by almost minigames. and that makes companys start focusing on making minigame type games. the sad thing is that it just may happen

Wii will destroy the hardcore gaming market. Everyone can see it. Nintendo sold themselves out. I guess they wanted to prove they could be #1 again but at the expense of all their true fans, the hardcore gamers who supported them since the NES. Its up to Sony and MS as the above poster said to stop this pending destruction of the market.

» Burn In Gamer Hell

You haters can go to Gamer Hell, where all there is, is minigame games, Sure Wii has Wario Ware, and Elebits.

Nut you have to have horrible games to have great ones, you can't sit at your little peice of typing space, and tell mre that there isn't at least 15 bad games for the PS, and the X box, I know there are. So quit your whining, and grow up to respect the Wii for all it is, and what it has done, and look, it has done what it has since Wii: Day 1 ALL BY ITS DAMN SELF! PD3 killed itself, with its high tech, high price, XBox 360 hasn't had a great game since Quake 4. So like I said, shut up! Wii is bringin its horrible game days to an end with the following:

ManHunt 2

Resident evil 4: Wii

Metroid

Mario

and Smash Bros.

Sure Mario is kinda kiddy, but look at its success, its been an ICON SINCE NES!!!! Just ike Samus and Link.

Smash Bros. is cool, no matter what anyone says, it is the top for Nintendo Fans, just like Tekken and Dead or Alive is for you PS and MS fans.

So take some of your bad games, sell them, and buy some chill pills!

(like I did, I was furiated that NfS Carbon was as crappy as it was for Wii, graphx were good, but controls were shiity. CoD 3 was the same too, except its grapfx were horrible, and the controls were even worse.)

» Hmmm...

Isn't manhunt 2 for ps2 and psp... isn't RE4 in gamecube before and the 360 and ps3 will have RE5.... isn't PS3 will have metal gear and 360 halo.. the only thing that I like about the nintendo franshise is mario and link and mario is just boring now... Link is the must buy console for me... and wii sport that is cool.. beside that.. the cool games is just multiplatforms.. with better grafics and gameplay in the next gen... but oh well... don't defend your console with that line up... beside that... the wii is cool and innovative but needs more to me

» Adult games... definitely not RE4 and Metal Gear...

'Harcore games' are heading to extinction. But that's a good thing. This kind of games are just the beggining of the videogame industry, just like the black&white films where the beggining of the film industry.

The videogame industry has kept caring just for teen fantasies for much too long. You say that Mario is kiddy, but what do you say of the 'Hardcore games'. This games have not evolved but graphically since the 1990s. In fact they have gone in the wrong direction in most other ways.

Think of the Monkey Island saga for example. Those were games that could make any kid or adult have a great time, because they were intelligent games with focus on great humor. Now most games consist on: you are a tough guy and have to beat the crap out of the bad guys. This is kiddy.

Definitely, I hope the industry moves on and finds new ways of gaming, even if it has to go through some years of stupid mini-gaming before finding it's way.

Nintendo (and any other who wants to move on), please keep going!

I think the varying video game markets can remain exclusive and still continue to be successful. Just as there were lots of FPS, RPG, Fighters, Racers and Sports games before, Wii has introduced some new game styles into the mix. It won't stop massive high-end games such as GoW and FFXIII from selling millions of copies.

» Not even close

To start the PS3 is by far a waist of time and money even for the developers. For starters it is not even selling enough units to be a major competitor in the market. The only real promising game for the PS3 will be FFXIII and one great game will not be enough to hold a console as a competitor in this market especially with the recent flop in Final Fantasy games (Better graphics but far less immersion.) Also the PS3 costs the developers far to much money to create a game that is an exclusive (the reason we are seeing so many multi platform games.) Even Square Enix is going to try their hands in having some releases on the Wii; with that said if they out sell FFXIII who knows the future of the Final Fantasy franchise. Wouldn't it be something to start seeing a multi platform Final Fantasy. This new console market will end up with an XBox 360 or a Wii on top. I myself have been a gamer since the 2600 days and I personally think the market will go to the 360 but it is far to early to tell a clear winner but if gamers are looking for immersion then the Wii will come out on top. Yeah right now the Wii has tons of mini games that are enough to drive someone crazy but with it's online gaming starting at the end of the month who knows what online games the developers have in store for the Wii's online system. The Wii may give the 360 a run for its money in '08.

First of all the reason there is more multiplatform games is to make sure we dont have another PS2 era all over again. The PS2 had the most games and exclusives. Developers want to make multiplatform games so that there isnt a monopoly going on. Yes the expense of making true next gen games (PS3, 360) is higher than current gen technology (PS2, Wii). You'' have to understand that the PS2 will get ports of some Wii games only because both are similar in hardware specs. Its a no brainer that the Wii could not port a game to the 360 or PS3 because it wouldnt be worth the time to do so. I for one would rather see ports push the technology rather than stepping it down a few notches.

» nintendo could stop it too but its also good to expand

i know what you mean. i have been and still am a nintendo fan but casual games are everywere with wii. i sometimes wish that nintendo just upgraded graphics but its not like its going to be like this forever. 5 years tops is going to make a cool combo of wii and cool hd graphics. + nint did not forget, zelda and metroid are on the way.

by brinztar - 2007-06-11 08:14
» always be

the hard core is still and always be big. nintendo would be naught without mario, zelda, metroid, starfox, DK and , dang there are alot and more nintendo only games which are like the most super hardcore you could ever get. also pokemon, dang almost forgot it. i guess there is nothings more hardcore than nintendo after all just that nothing hardcore on wii till those games arrive.

im sorry i needed to laugh. That is one of the most ridiculus comment ive read so far. So your idea of "you are a tough guy and have to beat the crap out of the bad guys" being kiddy, then most award winning movies are "kiddy," most TV dramas are "kiddy" and most of the best video games are "kiddy." You appear to be a nintendo fanboy that has no defense for the Wii. The Wii has it's good points, but nintendo's lack of REAL innovation is causing it to crap up the market. Metal Gear is a great game with a complex and involving story. Resident Evil can scare people more than most horror films, and the joy of getting a headshot on a trash talking noob in HALO online is one of the most satisfying gaming experiences. This wii sports-like games has its place in the video game market, but if it allowed to completely dominate, then the games with better stories, Metal Gear, HALO, Final Fantasy, Lost Planet, even Nintendo's shining stars will be destroyed. Mario used to be my favorite platformer, until it was raped by nintendo. There's Mario tennis, Kart, Soccer, Basketball, Golf, what's next? Mario Footbal, Poker, Boxing? So my last line is going to be this:

If Sony and Microsoft don't beat Nintendo, or make them change, the videogame industry will be ruined

» I'm just thinking....

This is very simple. Wii is for casuals, people that don't care about quality, or deep games. It's something like people who reads tabloid magazines.

In the other side is the XBOX 360/ PS3 gamers that love the deep and high quality games, like people who enjoy a great book.

That's an interesting analogy i've found, to describe this fenomenom..
