Wiis at Target: Gone in six minutes?

wii - Image 1We ran a rumor a few days back about some electronics stores who will have some Wiis for sale on January 21. Well, the rumor spread like a bush fire, so some people tried their luck and decided to visit their local electronic stores in the hopes of emerging with a Wii.

Some are not consumed by the excitement of possibly getting their hands on a Wii, so before trekking to their local Best Buy, Target, or Fry's they decided to call first. Digital Podium reports that he heard about the Wiis-in-stock- on January 21 rumor and decided to call Target first at around 8:06 am - merely six minutes after the they opened. This is how the Target employee answered his call:

Thank you for calling Target where we have already sold out of the Nintendo Wii, what can help you with today?

He must have been getting the same Do-you-have-a-Wii question that day. The search for a Wii didn't stop there as he called several Target stores in the Los Angeles area, and well, the answer is pretty much the same - NO WII HERE. Oh, that didn't sound right.

Anyhow, it's good that Ninty's latest console is selling like hotcakes. We guess you better get back at checking if your neighborhood Target has a Wii in stock.

that even though Nintendo is shipping thousands of Wii's everywhere it's still not enough to handle the demand! They'll be cracking 6-7 mill in the next month or so!

# yeah...wiis sold out fastGuest 2007-01-22 03:34
I work at a retailer in Grand Rapids Mi, (Meijer), we had 15 Wiis that we held for Sunday, with the intention of releasing them at 6 am. It is a 24 hour store, and at midnight people started lining up...we had 15 people by 3 am and since that was all the wiis we had, we released them to the people in line then. I then worked the day shift and had over 20 calls for Wii, and turned away about 10 people who showed up looking for one.

# wii lines last sundayGuest 2007-01-22 08:36
i used the target inventory numbers from launch as a guide and boy was i glad... all the local stores were holding wiis for a sunday morning sale (circuit city, BB, gamestop, etc.) and all had the usual paltry numbers on sunday morning. i went to the target that was supplied with 205 units on launch and at 5:45am was pleased to hear from the line monitor that they had 115 for us that morning. i was #40. by 7:15 they had handed out the last of the bracelets to buy a console so they were effectively sold out before the store opened. the target staff were awesome, very informative, and handled the whole situation very well. by constrast, Best Buy employees have been rude, secretive, and often laugh at attempts people have made to get one. i have a newfound respect for Target, and a bad taste in my mouth that will make me head to Amazon.com whenever I think i need something from the Best Buy down the street.

all in all, we were so lucky - people started camping out as early as 9pm on 1/20 for the sale at Best Buy, other Targets, and Circuit City - some people waiting in line for more units than were actually to be sold (21 at CC, 35+ people in line). we were also lucky that the flagship Target in our metro area is in a mall complex and that mall security forbade anyone from lining up the night before on account of "loitering." campers went instead to other Targets and retailers.

i'm very impressed by the still strong demand and the willingness for some to camp overnight. i'm also very happy to have my wii! i hope this story helps you with your next wii search.
