Wiinui: how long until you're bored?

This isn't news. Got that? We're asking you folks a question with this post though.

While this hilarious (debatable depending on your fandom) animated GIF we found on YouTube is hardly newsworthy, it still got us thinking about a few things. The video's below. It's simple and inane really. It's Yuki Nagato from the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya waving around a Wiimote. Observe:

Note the blank stare. The zombified look. The mechanical motion. The detachment. There's something about it that's telling isn't there?

en·nui –noun
a feeling of utter weariness and discontent resulting from satiety or lack of interest; boredom: The endless lecture produced an unbearable ennui.

Doesn't it make you worry that Nintendo may have given themselves a very big problem in the fact that if third party developers don't find ways to develop very innovative ways of taking advantage of the Wiimote we may be stuck with poor poor graphically inferior games?

Some would argue that the true Wii experience that so many Nintendo fans are quick to praise might only be found in first party Nintendo titles that are designed with the Wiimote in mind. What's worse is that Nintendo themselves admit will be released in a "spread out" fashion across the year to give each title the needed space.

Given that most fans take only a few weeks to finish their beloved games, what are we to swing our Wiimotes to every few months or so? To badly implemented third party Wii controls? Wii Sports and Wario Ware can only be charming for so long. Are we to suffer from Wii-nnui? Are we doomed to be like this zombified anime character with big eyes and a small mouth - forever waving a Wiimote in circles? We certainly hope not.

What about you folks? What's your take? How long did it take you guys got bored with Wii Sports?

I find it easier to rent a title to see if it good or not. If it is really good I keep it. If not I don't have to live with knowing that I brought this game that really is bad. Nintendo need to change. This is what made me mad about the GameCube. Third Party titles that sucks. You want a revolution do it. Stop these third party developers from dumping bad games onto your game system the wii. I think that Nintendo should take creative young developers under their wings and let them make some games for them. A company that has nothing to lose has the most to gain.

a potential problem. With a series of *****ty 3rd party ports, no current gen Wii versions (Just 360 and Ps3) of a lot of games, combined with an abysmall Q2 release schedule announced I think Nintendo might have a hard time.

Sony announce a Mii like system but it looks like it's Mii's to the 25th powa! I don't mean in visuals, just what they're doing with it; making it community based and linking with your friends. Nintendo has done bugger all in that regard. There's almost no Connect24 in their WiiConnect24 scheme - only Mii Parade bollocks.

I'm an early Wii adopter and I'm getting very pissed off.

Better than having no games and only using the system as a film player though.

"There are some potentially crazy-awesome games coming down the pipeline for Wii, by the way. You guys have no idea. I know that's vague -- has to be, but I've seen some stuff that you simply have no idea even exists and frankly, if you did, you'd flip out."

-Matt, from IGN.

Personally, I have absolutely no worries at all. It may take time, but eventually developer's will be sitting there, pondering about whatever game they're creating and go "Woah, I just got an AMAZING idea, something only possible on the Wii!". It may take time, but have some faith here. I remember reading an article on maxconsole about how the Wiimote is FAR more complex than what we can even imagine.

Things just take time, remember that.

Same feelings here mate. I got my Wii on the first day is was released here in the UK, but now it just doesnt seem as fun. You begin to notice the missing features that other consoles have over it.

I'm not bored of the Wii.

I still play Wii Sports and Zelda. Wii Play fails, but it's really only a €10 game when you look at it..

My next plan is to get some other good games. Let's not forget, sword-fighting has potential on the Wii (better than Red Steel). Wario Ware is proof that the Wii remote can be used in a lot more ways than you think. 3rd-party games will eventually improve to suit the Wii controller, and the 1st party games will rock.

It's fast selling so devs will start developing. Even consoles that showed less potential (DS, PSone etc), if they sold, devs would come in. And sure enough, that's the path of the Wii. But the Wii has more potential still, so this generation of consoles is going to be the age of Wii.

"Even consoles that showed less potential (DS, PSone etc), if they sold, devs would come in."

Yeh, thats right, 'cos the PSOne had less potential when it was released.... What are you on about here?!?

Anyways, I don't have a Wii, but my friend does and I've played on his many a time. And whilst its all good fun, I really do think its very gimmicky and I don't see an easy path for other devs to fully exploit the Wii's potential. Its not like with the 360 and the PS3, which are both powerhouses that devs can produce games for much more easily given the standard control system. Games made for those systems won't necessarily translate well to the Wii. A Wii game really needs to be a Wii game from the ground up.

Some may argue that the Sony vs. Microsoft war is just about power and all we'll see are beautifully rendered FPS and Driving games which aren't far removed from their previous generation counterparts. I don't think that personally, and I'll eventually settle for either the 360 or the PS3.

Innovative and fun it may be, but with devs needing to be comitted to a Wii only game from the off (no multiplatform here, you ain't exactly gonna see Wario Ware on a 360!), like the article says, owners are doomed to a brand new Wii experience only every month or so.

# Not bored at allGryff33 2007-03-08 11:40
I'm not bored of Wii Sports or any of my Wii games yet. Also, as some developers have already said publicly (but as a lot of people choose to ignore), at first they shyed away from Wii because they were unsure. Now that they see how well it's selling, they're starting to make more games for it. It takes time. The same thing happened with the DS; people were *****ing about how it's just a gimmick and it has no good, original games at first. Now look where it is: it's overall the top-selling system worldwide since it came out.

On that note, it doesn't take an onslaught of exclusive hits to keep a system popular. If a system has a few games that are outstandingly popular, it'll do great. Again, look at the DS: New Super Mario Bros. came out ages ago, and it's still one of the top-selling games out there for any system. If I'm not mistaken, it's still one of the top ten best-selling games in Europe.

As for third party releases, we should note that Sonic and the Secret Rings is the highest-rated Sonic game in ages. Red Steel is also very popular, despite its unjustly (in my opinion) low review scores. MySims looks like the best non-PC Sims game yet. Kororinpa, Cooking Mama, a Wii-ified Prince of Persia and Godfather, Heatseaker, and Dragon Quest Swords will all rock the second quarter. Also, while it's not a second quarter game, can you imagine how many preteens out there will rush out to buy the High School Musical game?

Meanwhile, the power of first-party games should not be ignored just because they're first-party games. The upcoming Super Paper Mario will grab plenty of attention, Metroid Prime 3 will continue the franchise's excellent tradition, Project Hammer looks amazing, and Mario Party 8 will be loads of fun.

These lists are far from complete; I didn't list every known title, and I can't begin to imagine the games we haven't heard about yet after what Matt (from IGN) said.

The truth is, it depends on your taste and your play style. The people who blast through a game in less than a week and then go buy a new one are not typical, especially for Wii owners.

well let me start by saying i actually own the wii and don't just talk without playing it. iv'e owned it since january and the lack of impressive titles actually makes me want to buy an xbox 360. im not saying that the wii isnt good, im saying that the "kids" games they come out with are not too entertaining. Its almost everyday that you turn on the t.v. and see a great, action-packed game trailer for the ps3 or 360, the kind of games todays gamers want, a game with action and adventure. but it will always be played for mario and super smash bros. and lets not forget the popular zelda(not player but i know a lot of people that do play) all in all, the wii is a kids system, with the occasional action title. not hating on the wii because its awesome wiimote makes any game fun, but i just dont think its graphics and titles are going to make it for too long after the prices of ps3 and 360 drop, even though i dont own either the 360 or ps3, still have great graphics. once again, im not saying the wii isnt great, but the games make the system, not the other way around.

# I want to love my Wii......but.........jpcguy89 2007-03-08 14:33
The games suck...I mean give or take a few. Zelda was amazing, but once you beat it, there's no reason to play it again. Elebits was cool, but that got old REAL fast. Trauma center, same thing. Wii Sports, had my attention for a few hours, then it faded away as well. And the games that I have been dying for, like Mario Party 8, and others, either have been PUSHED BACK *snarls* or aren't scheduled to be released until December of this year. I mean, I gotta say, if your gonna push back a game not 1 or 2 or 3 but nearly 4 months, maybe put some of the highly anticipated games onto the VC. And OF COURSE, my 360 crapped out on me, the three red lights of death, so now I have no decent games to play. Nintendo, please, make an effort and turn the Wii around, I'm begging you.

I Knew someone would agree with me on the game subject. nintendo states that they were targeting older people as well as younger but i dont see any games for older people besides Red Steel and Call of Duty 3 (if you can count those).

# The wii was a gimickGuest 2007-03-08 19:47
Ha ha this cracks me up. The WII is going to become like the gamecube. It was fun while it lasted at start. I know a lot of my friends that LOVED their wii's. Now they would rather have a ps3, haha. I love nintendo for their games but it's time to move on from creating these weak in graphics consoles they develop.
