Wiimote was originally made for the GameCube

Wii Remote patent - Image 1 Wii Remote patent - Image 2

There are those who accuse the Wii of just being a revamped GameCube. Not to say I agree with them, but a recently dug up patent reveals that the Wiimote technology was originally meant for the geometry-inspired console.

The patent, filed March 10 of 2006 in Japan, was for an "accelerometer-based controller." While it still wasn't named yet back then, let's just call it the Wiimote, shall we? It's catchier, even if it is suggestive. The patent held sketches of the Wiimote being used with the GameCube, communicating via a Wavebird-esque adapter.

Does this make the Wii less than it is? Of course not. After all, every generation of console will borrow and improve on the technology of its predecessor. What it does show is that Nintendo recognized a good idea and chose to run with it. Hopefully though, the next gen Wii will finally address oversights from the first gen. Where's that frakkin hard drive, Nintendo?

Seems like gamespot had this same article around when the Wii Remote was first unveiled.

I think the Wii 2 should come with dust wipes, since you'll need to dust off the system each time you use it.

Wasnt the wii announced way before the "accelerometer-based controller." was patented??

So... They Nintendo had only nine months to design and construct the wii???? (from march 2006 to november 2006)

Well, this is a lame conclusion. By this logic, one could also claim the CD Drive was REALLY for the N64. Or even SNES for that matter.

R&D always overlaps.

There are features in Vista that MS first tried out in alphas between Win98SE and WinME.

What an idiot. You have no clue how product development works.

Nintendo HAD a Disc drive when the N64 was released. They where going to MAYBE release it for the N64 but never did. Either way, that doesn't mean squat. It doesn't mean the disc drive in the GameCube is old and crap because they STARTED development prior to the GameCube development.

Exactly what part of that are you failing to understand?

Exactly, but idiots like Mr. Common Douche Bag will continue to claim....well...all the BS he ATTEMPTS to claim below.

But no one believes his BS propaganda.

I bet the only reason they depict the GameCube in this image was because the Wii design wasn't fully finished. Plus, it just makes it easier to explain when an actual product already exists.

You're ... wrong. The N64DD was a DISK drive, not a DISC drive. It used cartridges.

You're thinking of the Playstation, which was originally a joint venture between Sony and Nintendo around the time of the Super NES.

@KingPoubar: I think the joke that theRockness was trying to say was completely lost on you. He was implying that every time a game comes out on the Wii that's worth playing, there's so much dust accumulated on the system because it's been so long since you touched it.

He obviously doesn't know about all these good games that I've been having fun with with my friends and family since launch...

No, YOU are wrong. The drive was in response to Segas CD drive. Nintendo has promissed us a DISC drive ever since then.

Quit kissing his ass.

Yeah i am aware of that. I just enjoy calling people lazy idiots when they say the wii collects dust. There's so many decent games for it that these fools cant see past the latest crappy mini game disc that's the 540893th in the series of sequels or High School Musical 3709: The grave yard reunion special.

Where else are you going to play Manhunt 2 in the most violent way possible? Where else can any fps or 3rdps be a light gun game straight out of the arcade? Where else can you play Madworld? Where else can you legally beat up school kids with your bare hands?

Only on the Wii.

Actually, Manhunt 2 on the PS2 is more violent. The filter (or censor) is far less blurry so you can see much more of the kill.

And as far as "legally beat[ing] up school kids with you bare hands", I just don't get it. How is waggling your controller in the air anything like the real thing?

These games have been done on other consoles before, and usually, they are done much better. In addition, the Wii has abysmal 3rd party support. I think that's what TheRockness is talking about with dust wipes and Nintendo.

"There was the PlayStation, but Nintendo's greed botched that whole deal."

LOL, that wasn't because of greed, you idiot! You know what part of that deal was? Sony would have all the rights to the software released on the SNES add-on, including Nintendo's games! Sony would've controlled what released and when! It was clearly a bad deal for Nintendo and it was smart of them for backstabbing Sony.

Unfortunately, that also brought about the four worst Nintendo-based games that-shall-not-be-named on the CD-i.

# It's just a patent...Specht 2009-01-10 18:44
Nintendo executives said themselves that the Wiimote was originally intended as a peripheral for the GCN. Though they assumed it wouldn't sell very well so they saved the idea for their next console.

While this particular patent does state the truth that it was developed for the GCN (albeit just by having a pic of the GCN), that isn't valid proof that the Wiimote was developed for GCN. The proof was the word of either Miyamoto or Iwata who specifically stated that. Previous consoles are used all the time in patents for features of a future console either because they don't have the design complete yet, or to hide information from the public and competitors.

This is a very common occurence though. The "Play Station" (not "PlayStation", that's the console that Sony developed based on their's and Nintendo's "Play Station") was originally designed as a SNES peripheral but that's the most overtold story in the gaming industry and it's not even worth mentioning.

"Nintendo currently isn't interested in making decent quality games" - Mister Common Sense

...please tell me you didn't mean that... I'll rephrase that for you: "Nintendo isn't interested in LICENSING decent quality games". Which is why Disaster: Day of Crisis hasn't been released in North America yet.

Bottom line...there was a disc drive for the SNES, thats where the joint venture between Sony and Nintendo started. Due to a hole in their contract, along with Philips, Nintendo never actually owned the disc drive, and in legal dispute, Sony got to keep it all. And yes, the N64 also had one, that was only released in Japan, and it never made it very far. The playstation was made simultaneously. Now as far as this goes, there is a difference between having a PERIPHERAL and an actual controller. What it would've been for the Game Cube was an addon, maybe for like a hand full of games, kinda like the Network Adapter for the game cube. Now, it is the main controller. Need we not forget the nunchuck? It's obvious at the time, it WAS just the wiiremote by itself. But you can't build an entire console without having other movement buttons, thats why the nunchuck was created. They knew they had something bigger on their hands, and if they would've just released it for a few games back then, it would've been more of a joke than it is to some of the scoffers that we have now. However, I own every current gen system (PS3, Wii, 360) and the Wii is the ONLY system that's actually fun. Here, let me explain what I mean. The console ITSELF is fun. You could play a game on any other console, and the game would have to be fun and if it's not you can just sell it back and get a different one, but you know what the fun games are. With the Wii, it's the opposite, there could be some crappy game that's made (it looks awful, has mono audio and is single player) but the controls are always going to be fun. It isn't gimmicky here, in the instance that it is the console, however, if it would've just been some addon for a game on the game cube, that you would only use a few times (bongos) then it would've been a gimmick.

I had to register on QJ - after posting as annon for so long cos Isohaven's comments are always flaming hot.

Last few days I see him everywhere!! I ignored it for ages but he is unavoidable!

I end up wasting time reading comments which always end up with him being angry (and making others angry because he just cant write in a constructive manner) then the topic falling apart - as soon as he posts then all chance of discussion goes out the window!

I have never seen such a flame retard!

Isohaven - you should join some religious forums and go off on one of your rants, your method of talking absolute rubbish which has nothing to do with the topic could mean you have the potential to form some sort of a pseudo PS3 cult which reveres the Cell in some sort of wierd way....Some things just dont need to be argued about, seriously!

You have so much energy!!!i

Are you are a very spoilt child whose parents spend money on his tech addiction to the point where your mind is in your bum and you believe you know everything that matters

I can't imagine that anyone who actually works in the real world and has to deal with angry or unhappy work colleagues could possibly approach any argument in the way you do and expect a result other than a flame war?

Maybe you are a member of QJ staff? Did I miss something? Maybe you do it cos it brings lots of laughs to the readers going through your flaming posts?

I really hope QJ admin dont remove this for being completly off topic.....

Peace to all!

His heart's in the right place...but where's his brain? Isohaven, there are PLENTY of us diehard Nintendo fans out there. But as I've stated before, they don't need someone like you chiming in every time someone says something that you find inaccurate. MCS's statements may be unfounded, hell I even remember wanting to rant at him one time because he said that the WaveBird doesn't work with the Wii. But just because he's wrong here and there doesn't mean that you need to come swinging in like Tarzan and seem all heroic...just to fly into a tree because your rants are so clumsy and way too over the top.

Hell, MCS is almost always wrong. I say almost because I haven't read *all* his posts, I just know that all the ones I *have* read have been full of fallacies. I honestly think he and ISOHaven either really enjoy flaming each other, or are actually friends IRL and get a kick out of going off on flame wars. I know me and my friends liked to be douches like that way back in the day.

Haha...yeah, WAY back in the day :)

Nah, I just have fun doing it. I work a 12 hour period 5 days a week. I get 4 hours in lunch and breaks. I need something to fill the time!

I used to mod over at PSP-HACKS.com but that became too time consuming. Then I hit newsgroups which was HORRIBLE when it comes to trolls. Then I landed here.
