Wiikey: first and only upgradable Wii modchip? |
Ó
Anyway, we found another one today, and it seems that this particular modchip might eclipse that of TeamCyclops. It's called Wiikey and according to its devs, it is the first and only upgradable modchip to date. We looked around to know who's responsible for this creation, but its devs are rather elusive. If we are not mistaken, however, it was created by the same group who came up with GameCube's XenoGC.
The devs also mentioned that they will upload their site with pictures and more features within the next few days. Expected shipping date, if things push through, is February 7.

nice an upgradable chip dis is da best 1 so far deez guys r genuises
What does: Boots different NTSC region Wii games/backups
mean?
Does that mean my NTSC wii can play PAL system games?
You can not load a backup file or game from a different region than what your Wii was intended for meaning that if your console is intended for the US then you will not be able to play Europen or Japanese releases of a game. Due to different economies this allows Nintendo to regulate prices more efficiently and also limits gamers to games designed for their area.
It also sucks ass. **** you, Nintendo Australia. **** you.
THe best chip ? I dont think so, cause you can put a new firmware via dvd, so nintendo could run something to reset the chip in there game, Maybe they will not do something like that, but I better go with a static chip than a dvd upgradable chip.
Can't wait for an USB solution.
So for me to use this, i opened my wii and solder the chip in?
I have a PAL Nintendo wii, does this mean i can play NTSC Games?
First of all there be NO USB version of a mod chip because that is not what a mod chip does (or how it works). so don't say stupid ***** and get the non-tech people who read this stuff excited. mod chips go through a debugger port that is installed on the mobo for DEBUGGING the system. what the mod chip does is go in through the debugger port and tells the system something its not normally supposed to know. in this situation, the wii its preprogrammed to NOT play burned DVD's (yes machines can figure out what a "copy" is) however, the mod-chip over-rides that signal. if you want to mod your wii you WILL have to open your wii and void the warrenty. however, if the mod chip offers QUICKSOLDER which supposedly this one does, then almost anyone can do it. so kiddies don't get your hopes up on a USB mod chip cuz thats just pure BS!
i think fakester was talking about a modchip that has a usb port that you can connect to a computer to upgrade software,
what i think you were thinking of is a usbkey that plugs into the back of the wii and acts as a modchip.
What the hell you are talking about, I'm talking about an USB way of updating the firmware on the chip. not via dvd.
and like you said, Stop talking and pay attention ;p
Another thing, cyclowiz is upgradable, like the wiikey, but how you guys will update the chip if the dvd drivechip doesnt work ? it should be usb flashable
There are different regions that use NTSC, Japan, for instance. But each region is encoded for that region, and each machine can only play its own region. This would unlock that restriction, allowing the machine to play from any region using NTSC. It will not handle PAL.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTSC#Technical_details
That will explain some of the differences between NTSC and PAL, and why they aren't particularly interchangable with most equipment, regardless of what modchip you use.
Hope that clarifies some for you.
It's highly unlikely that Nintendo would ever write code into their software to screw up a particular modchip. If one is firmware upgradable, then more should follow, and it would just be unfeasible for them to track them all down and write specific foils for each of them.
Probably not, but it'd be nice.
That was needlessly hostile. No need to jump down people's throats to flex your intellectual might, there are friendlier ways of puffing your ego for the masses.
I'm pretty sure the wiikey needs to be in upgrade mode before it can be updated via dvd. So if your just playing games it should be impossible for the wiikey to be upgraded/ tampered with by the game disk
