WiiConnect24 to be Disconnected in the UK?

WiiConnect24Will a new law keep WiiConnect24, one of Nintendo Wii's hyped new features, out of the UK?

Club Skill reports that the British Government is enforcing a new law which requires standby features of appliances to be slashed from product designs. Products mentioned include items like set-top boxes, chargers, televisions, and computers. Apparently, these and other similar items must be more energy-efficent, and standby features won't be tolerated.

In case you don't know, WiiConnect24 takes advantage of a standby mode that allows the Wii system to always be on. While it's on, Nintendo and your friends can send messages to your system, interact with certain features, and send downloads to your system.

Why would this law ever hit the books, you ask? Well, the Government says standby features consume at least 8% of the UK's energy each year. Yikes.

Will the new law mean Nintendo has to axe this feature in the UK? Let's just hope the Wii can include all of its exciting new features in all regions.

You know what, I wish the Wii comes with an option to turn the

off (even do I know it probably won't). I hate this WiiConnect24 thingy. Think about it: this is just a way for Nintendo to invade your privacy and not only that, but later on when someone finally figures out the Wii OS they'll be able to hack it and who knows probably send you a virus courtesy of

Nintendo's dumb "WiiConnect24 Feature"

Oh please nr 2 , you are much too worried and did you ever think of pulling the cable from the wall ? it cant be powered "magically" .

I f i lived in UK right now , i would just die , how can they take away these features ..i mean how hard is it to remove something after it is already incorporated..they will have to redesign everything

I don't see how the article poster comes to the conclusion that the Wii will be the only console effected by this law. Both the PS3 and 360 also use standby features in order to be able to turn on the consoles remotely using the controllers.

If consoles are to be included in these regulations, it'll be interesting to see how the three companies get around it. Although, I do believe this to be a step in the right direction for the UK government.

On the topic of WiiConnect24, I'm not as paranoid as the above poster on this issue. There is no doubt that you will be able to manually turn off the service (for those trying to minimise wasted bandwidth, especially), and there is no reason for this service to be anymore susceptible to hacks than Live or Sony's upcoming service. Yet, I am still sceptical about the usefulness of the service, I just don't see much point in it. But I'm hoping for Nintendo to prove me wrong.

# Why cant WiiConnect be web based in the UK?Chavagnatze 2006-07-17 19:23
When your friends write you or whatever it isn't sent straight to the Wii. It is sent to the Wii after it connects to the WiiConnect server on start up. This way Wii can shut down totally. Everywhere else the Wii will be connected 24 hours a day like it was originally designed.

# PS2 had two power switches.Chavagnatze 2006-07-17 19:30
There was the main switch in the back that had total control over power and the front button. From looking at PS3, I think it is set up the same way. Well in the UK there will just be the main power switch.

Xbox will need a dedicated power switch on the unit.

If they do take that off for UK, I'll just import. Simple.

Standby was invented for a reason, this is NOT going to help. People who put their PCs on standby when not in use aren't going to shut down, they going to leave it on instead.

This is going to do more damage than good and is just going to annoy everybody.

They'll probably argue that the Wii isn't going into a standby mode, as it is still doing something, be it getting new information or sending top scores, or downloading games. They might go the complete opposite direction and say that it's a low power consumption mode, rather than standby. And it's there so you don't have to leave the Wii completely on when you're getting updates, or new games.

God I wish I could move to the US right now.

Anyway Pheonix standby was made for impatient people who can't be bothered waiting for things to turn on.

Hopefuly they will be able to get away with saying it's a low power state so it only uses the minimum features though.

# No reason why....Guest 2006-07-18 03:46
WiiConnect24 could easily be a mode seperate from off and seperate from any standby function. All Nintendo need do is ignore the word 'Standby' and call it 'WiiConnect24' mode, ensure you can still have the whole system 'Off' by a hard power button and voila, no issue. Unless I am missing something!

# here's an idea...Guest 2006-07-18 05:42
If you don't like the wiiconnect feature, simply unplug the freaking ethernet cable from the back. I'm sure in about a month after it's released, someone will figure out a way to prevent the Wii from accessing the net. In such a way.

# why not a power saving standby?CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS 2006-07-18 06:51
Why could they just use a capacitor or a small battery to give just enough power to sense someone trying to access the console and turn on what is needed for the time and back off when finished. This seems more reasonable than scrapping the feature.

Not worth it. Far too many *****s here. If it is for whatever reason removed, importing never fails.

I don't like the idea of the wii being connected to the Internet all the time. So I'll just set my router to turn of it's connection at certain times.
