WiiConnect24 cause of bricked Wiis?

The Wii - Image 1

Wii owners listen up, as the next bit of information regarding Ninty's console could just save yours from bricking. It seems that WiiConnect24, the system built into the Wii that's designed to keep the console connected to the internet when set to standby mode, has been reported to cause hardware failure - this after the aforementioned console has been on standby with WiiConnect 24 enabled for long periods of time.

It seems that usage of WiiConnect24, despite allegedly being power-friendly, heats up the console more than if the console itself is turned on and being played games on. Hot enough, in fact, to cook the main CPU, causing brick-age. This might be due to the fact that the fans are turned off in WiiConnect24 mode.

Nintendo's reaction? No, they haven't received any reports about the WiiConnect24 causing such problems. If there were, users should immediately call the Nintendo Service Center, instead of reporting on forums or anywhere else.

And while we could understand the grief of having your very own Wii bricking just because of WiiConnect24, there's something to say about leaving your console on standby for extended periods of time. It makes much more sense to turn appliances off - not just the Wii, or any other game console - when not in use. It gives you the peace of mind that it won't actually overheat, plus it saves you money from the utilities bill.

Updates as we get them.

my wii gets warm at times in wiiconnect24/7 mode and it does seem to be a true design flaw , because all the components are in essence cooking under its own heat with no air fan circulation.I bot a secondary fan from gamestop and it runs in wiiconnect24/7 mode and my wii stays ice cold. the fan is made by NYKO i beleave and to turn it off all you do is hold in the power button on the wii untill the light turns red and the fan will power down.P S i got the 1st post so ha ha ha .

That's a damn shame that one of Nintendo's highly touted features could be in shambles. I have noticed my Wii getting hot lately.

I wonder if mod chips could be coded to leave the fan on in WiiConnect24 mode...

firstly, I KNOW that Wii connect does damage to the graphical processing unit, as my wii's now got green dots all over the video output.

secondly, I doubt mod chips could do that, as they only interface with the dvd drive, not anything else.

I noticed that it does get very hot way back when I bought it with the WiiConnect on. I turned off that feature way back then. I just thought it was my console so I was playing it safe.

I have WiiConnect24 enabled.

I live in the southern US. I just went on vacation for two weeks, and turned off the airconditioning . I came back and the house was 85 degrees at midnight.

It did nothing to the Wii in standby or the DVR I had absentmindedly left powered up.

If people are really killing their Wii's this way, I suspect they have them sitting on the floor, in shag carpet, or something.

Ya, my first wii got black artifacts from leaving wii connect 24 on constantly. I sent it back and got a new one. I now have wii connect 24 turned off in standby mode. The gay thing is though that the news and weather channels don't work when you have standby off.

my wii also gets warm and i'v never unplugged it since i got it in december. sometimes i dont even play it for weeks and its fine when i do.

altho leaving it on the same screen for too long causes one side of the screen to go yellowish but my gamecube also did that whenever i played imports so its a common problem not only in the wii but the cube and depends on the output freq

My Wii (lying down flat) has plenty of air on all 5 sides but gets uncomfortable warm in WiiConnect Mode. I won't be terribly concerned until it breaks though.

I've left my Wii on for LONG periods of time on Standby mode, and I mean like weeks, and it's fine. I do notice it is hot, but nothing is happening at all. If this DOES mess up my Wii, Nintendo damn better replace it with all my Virtual Console games and the full Internet Channel in it, I'm not wasting more money to rebuy them...

# so real IT HURTS FOOLGuest 2007-07-19 19:12
this happened to me. this is real. my wii is in an air conditioned room (77 f) and is alone on a table - not shag carpeting like the retard a few posts up said....

from what i have gathered by looking into this online is that this problem may be only with the first batch of wiis. Also I have not heard of any wiis bricking at all but rather the graphics card getting partially fried causing black/green lines and dots to appear all over the screen.

I have not sent my wii back yet as I want to finish a few games first and I do not know if I will get my original wii back with my game saves.

Every post I have read where someone has had this problem and sent their wii into N for repairs has said that instead of getting their console back they get a refurbished one, their wii sports saves are gone, and their miis have different color pants/are uneditable - like what happens if you transfer them to a dif. console via the wii mote.

anyone else have any experience with this?? If so, when you wii or refurb has come back have the pins on the chip been clipped making it harder to mod?

A new wii wont be out for like 3 or 4 years, but when it does come out it wil have xbox360 graphics. This is just a guess, but it makes sense.

"anyone else have any experience with this?? If so, when you wii or refurb has come back have the pins on the chip been clipped making it harder to mod?"

I presume that your wii was modded... then maybe was not a problem related to overheating...

If it was, i realy hope that Nintendo give back your wii without any repair at all.

I realy dont think that there's a real problem with wii, i think this is some sad prank from some fanboy that wants to give Nintendo a bad name.

My friend own a wii, and she dont play for weeks, the console is always in standby and everytime i go to her house i play like there is no tomorow, never saw any graphic artifacts or anything like that!

If you have the room, you should get a metal rack shelving or something similar to place your consoles on. Mine are simple racks that you can join together vertically and might commonly find in various warehouse-like stores. I think it's from Ikea? Anyway, having something without a solid bottom and plenty of free flowing air around is a good idea for any electronics. I know most people's entertainment/tv cabinet is made of solid wood and glass doors that they keep shut 24/7...so is mine. It's okay to keep a cable box or cheap dvd player in there, since it's no big deal to replace them and they generally don't run that hot. However, you cram a few consoles, a dvr, etc. in there and all that heat gets trapped and concentrated into an Electronic Death Sauna.

Actually no,...my wii is not / was not modded at all - and yes I may want to "MOD" it one day as I have lived in Japan for several years and may be returning there next year to stay for another few years.

If I do leave next April for Japan for three years I would like to be able to purchase games in the country I am living in and be able to play them on my console... ...so YES I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO MOD and YES YOU ARE AN ARROGANT PRICK THAT ASSUMES ALL MODDERS WANT ARE TO STEAL AND PLAY STOLEN GAMES.

Furthermore, you think because a problem has not happened to your system or your friends that it does not exist? Maybe, JUST MAYBE not every console is defective. I have never had a problem with my 360 nor any of my friends...yet there is a supposed 30% failure rate.... ....and oh yeah after a year or so of denying the existance of a problem......only THEN did MS admit there was a problem and extend the 360 warranty to 3 years! But the problem never happened to me, so by your logic it must not exist, right?

You show your ignorance with every keystroke. I pity you. I feel sorry for your parents, and I hope that one day you grow as person.

you say the problem fixed itself?

About the repair...if it is needed....the warranty last 1 year from date of purchase....so you are still covered!

Apparently, it's either green/black dots appearing all over the screen, or your wii not working at all.

I bought my Wii within the 1st week of it's release. After at least a good 5 months or so of use, spots gradually started appearing in forms of vertical lines or even sporadically on the screen. And it does this during a game or on the Wii menu. Nintendo repaired it

I sent my last comment without finishing, so I'm using yours dude, sorry. Nintendo repaired it and I DOWNLOADED ALL MY VC games for FREE, so you have to be full of *****!! Regardless, unfortunately my Wii has broke a SECOND time and I've also noticed the fan not running with standy-by-mode on and still feeling hot enough to need it!! ....again this was a continued response to Brinstar. Also, Dark-Vash is a doosh. It's real man....my is seriously messed for the 2nd time. I hope it's just the small # of consoles released from day one, cause like I said I got mine in the 1st week. My bro and sister have one and it's fine. They got theirs later but not by much. peace
